Aluminum brass tubing which is highly cost-effective and has a high heat transfer property has been widely used for seawater cooled condenser in Japan. However, the tubing suffers from erosion and corrosion on the inner surface in spite of ferric-ion injection and cathodic protection. Ammonia also attacks the outer surface after long years of service. Periodic replacement with new tubing has been performed. Titanium tubing which has high corrosion resistance, has been used in new condensers and for the air removal zone of the condenser. However, its service has been restricted due to higher cost and lower elastic modulus. As a countermeasure, we have developed a high performance ferritic stainless steel tubing called "Super Stainless: FS1O" which has excellent corrosion resistance and is highly cost-effective. First, the tubings were used experimentally in our Buzen thermal power station, Unit 2 condenser in 1993, and various investigations have been performed on the extracted tubing and tube sheet every year. Ammonia attack on the outer surface, corrosion and erosion on the inner surface, crevice corrosion between the tube and the tube-sheet. Hz absorption and degradation of properties was not observed. Based on these results, 1,006 pieces of FS1O were installed in Buzen thermal power station, Unit I condenser in 1996. The tubing has been used in seawater without any corrosion problems.
Improvement of parallel processing performance by using two kinds of Huge Page

A main memory capacity in PC continues to increase because the memory requirements which applications need get bigger and bigger. It is easy to expand main memory. But TLB is very scarce as before. Under these circumstances, the uses of Huge Page reduce TLB misses by reducing the numbers of needed entries of TLB, consequently give applications which need large memories a good effect in regard to execution speed. But the uses of Huge Page cause large useless memory because operating system round up used memory to a multiple of Huge Page size. Then we propose a method which can use Huge Page while saving memories on IA-64. This proposed method allocates another smaller Huge Page which we added this time to a fragment in the back part of used memory. As a result of experimentation, proposed method show the same speed as the original system and good results in regard to memory requirements. This time we applied this proposed method to PC cluster as parallel processing programs need large memories generally and measured parallel processing performance.
Development of a low-profile wideband antenna system for mobile satellite communication

Auto-tracking antennas are a key component of broadband mobile satellite communications. In particular, low-profile antennas are required for high-speed trains to reduce wind noise. We present an auto-tracking receiving antenna system with an ultra-low-profile (90-mm height) configuration. The antenna has high G/T, wideband capacity, and highly accurate tracking performance. We tested the antenna on an experimental microbus. Results demonstrate the antenna can be used for mobile satellite communications. This paper describes the configuration and performance of the antenna system.
