Grain boundaries in policrystalline alloys play an important role on the deformation and its strength. It is necessary that a complete understanding of the effect of grain boundary on the deformation, in order to put these alloys into the best utilization. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of grain boundaries on the deformation of (α+β) two phase brass polycrystalline. For this study, grains of specimens were coarsened to simplify the complicate grain boundary. After tensile deformation, slip line analysis near grain boundary was accomplished. Schmid factor, stress delivering factor and strain incompatibility were introduced in the explanation of present results. The activation of slip system which was affected by the grain boundary itself were explained by the combination of these factors. Also, it was introduced that the properties of strain incompatibility depend on the condition of grain boundaries and tensile axis.

<P>A novel protein-folding function of RNA has been recognized, which can outperform previously known molecular chaperone proteins. The RNA as a molecular chaperone (chaperna) activity is intrinsic to some ribozymes and is operational during viral infections. Our purpose was to test whether influenza hemagglutinin (HA) can be assembled in a soluble, trimeric, and immunologically activating conformation by means of an RNA molecular chaperone (chaperna) activity. An RNA-interacting domain (RID) from the host being immunized was selected as a docking tag for RNA binding, which served as a transducer for the chaperna function for <I>de novo</I> folding and trimeric assembly of RID-HA1. Mutations that affect tRNA binding greatly increased the soluble aggregation defective in trimer assembly, suggesting that RNA interaction critically controls the kinetic network in the folding/assembly pathway. Immunization of mice resulted in strong hemagglutination inhibition and high titers of a neutralizing antibody, providing sterile protection against a lethal challenge and confirming the immunologically relevant HA conformation. The results may be translated into a rapid response to a new influenza pandemic. The harnessing of the novel chaperna described herein with immunologically tailored antigen-folding functions should serve as a robust prophylactic and diagnostic tool for viral infections.—Yang, S. <P>We present the synthesis, characterization, and structural analysis of a thiophene-rich heteroacene, dibenzothiopheno[6,5-b:6',5'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DBTTT) as well as its application in field-effect transistors. The design of DBTTT is based on the enhancement of intermolecular charge transfer through strong S-S interactions. Crystal structure analysis showed that the intermolecular pi-pi distance is shortened and that the packing density is higher than those of the electronically equivalent benzene analogue, dinaphtho-[2,3-b:2',3'f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (DNTT). The highest hole mobility we obtained in polycrystalline DBTTT thin-film transistors was 19.3 cm(2).V-1.s(-1), six times higher than that of DNTT-based transistors. The observed isotropic angular mobilities and thermal stabilities at temperatures up to 140 degrees C indicate the great potential of DBTTT for attaining device uniformity and processability.</P>
Roles of Cancer Registries in Enhancing Oncology Drug Access in the Asia-Pacific Region

Cancer registries help to establish and maintain cancer incidence reporting system, serve as a resource for investigation of cancer and its causes, and provide information for planning and evaluation of preventive and control programs. However, their wider role in directly enhancing oncology drug access has not been fully explored. We examined the value of cancer registries in oncology drug access in the Asia-Pacific region on three levels: (1) specific registry variable types; (2) macroscopic strategies on the national level; and (3) a regional cancer registry network. Using literature search and proceedings from an expert forum, this paper covers recent cancer registry developments in eight economies in the Asia-Pacific region - Australia, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand - and the ways they can contribute to oncology drug access. Specific registry variables relating to demographics, tumor characteristics, initial treatment plans, prognostic markers, risk factors, and mortality help to anticipate drug needs, identify high-priority research area and design access programs. On a national level, linking registry data with clinical, drug safety, financial, or drug utilization databases allows analyses of associations between utilization and outcomes. Concurrent efforts should also be channeled into developing and implementing data integrity and stewardship policies, and providing clear avenues to make data available. Less mature registry systems can employ modeling techniques and ad-hoc surveys while increasing coverage. Beyond local settings, a cancer registry network for the Asia-Pacific region would offer cross-learning and research opportunities that can exert leverage through the experiences and capabilities of a highly diverse region.

A New Variable Refrigerant Flow System Simulation Approach in EnergyPlus

A variable refrigerant °ow (VRF) system is widely applied to build air conditioning systems. Literature review of previous VRF modeling studies was conducted, and it was found that the current calculation approach in EnergyPlus can result in more than 20% deviation in both heat transfer capacity and power consumption. Therefore, a new VRF model is proposed in this study, which includes an improved thermal zone distribution concept, new indoor unit types, and a new thermodynamic model. The developed model is validated with experimental data within 10% in heat transfer capacity and 5% in power consumption. Based on the proposed model, the operation control strategy is also discussed. The results show that the proposed model could also simulate the current control strategy in the VRF system.

이 연구에서는 원예농가 경영설계프로그램을 구축하기 전에 개발수요와 프로그램 구축 방향에 대해 연구하였다. 연구목표 달성을 위해 원예농가 552명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 프로그램 개발 방향성 관련 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료에 대한 요인분석과 순위로짓분석결과 컴퓨터 활용능력, 경영설계요인, 재무요인에 대한 추정 계수는 (+)로 해당변수가 증가할수록 경영설계 프로그램 도입확률이 증가하는 반면 영농경력에 대한 추정계수는 (-)로 나타나, 영농경력수준이 증가함에 따라 프로그램 사용 확률이 감소하는 결과를 도출하였다. 아울러 유형별로 볼 때 채소 더미에 대한 추정계수가 (-)로 나타나 채소농가들의 프로그램 도입확률이 다른 원예농가들에 비해 낮은 것으로 분석되었다. 이러한분석결과로부터 산출한 보수적 수요는 총 294,228명으로 나타났고, 낙관적 수요는 1,043,545명으로 분석되어 원예농가 경영설계프로그램은 상당한 수요가 존재하는 것을 알 수 있다. In this study we estimate the development demand for the program of management plan on horticultural farms. There were 552 horticultural farmers sampled and surveyed to examine their preference on management planning. And both factor analysis and ordered logit model were used to estimate results by using survey data. Based on estimated coefficients from the models, the results show that career, computer application ability, management plan factor and financial factor are important factors in explaining development demand for the program of management plan. The results of this paper may provide useful information in order to forecast the development demand for the program of management plan on horticultural farms.

<B>Abstract</B><P>Due to the lack of an effective prophylactic intervention and diagnosis, human liver fluke <I>Clonorchis sinensis</I> continues to afflict a large human population, causing a chronic inflammatory bile duct disease. With an aim to identify target antigens for sensitive serodiagnosis, adenylate kinase 3 of <I>C. sinensis</I> (CsAK3) was successfully expressed in soluble form in <I>Escherichia coli</I> by fusion to an RNA-interacting domain derived from human Lys-tRNA synthetase and purified by Ni<SUP>2+</SUP>-affinity chromatography. Anti-CsAK3 serum was raised by immunization of mice, and Western blotting confirmed that CsAK3 was expressed in adult-stage <I>C. sinensis</I>. Histochemical analysis showed that CsAK3 was localized to the subtegumental tissue of <I>C. sinensis</I> and was excreted into the bile duct of the host. When tested against sera from various parasite-infected patients by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, the recombinant CsAK3 elicited a specific response to <I>C. sinensis</I>-infected sera. The results suggest that CsAK3, either alone or in combination with other antigens, could be used for improving the clinical diagnosis of clonorchiasis.</P>
