        Hypoglycemic effect of Rehmannie Radix Preparata (Sookjihwang) extract in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

        Rhemannie Radix Preparata (RRP) has been previously employed in traditional oriental medicine as a treatment for diabetic thirst and improving blood flow. The aim of this study was to evaluate its hypoglycemic control by assaying the activities of key enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism in streptozotocin-(STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Further, RRP extracts were prepared in water (RRPW), in 50% ethanol (RRP50), and in 100% ethanol (RRP100), respectively, and compared for their actions in diabetic rats. The oral treatment of RRP (5 ㎎/㎏ b.w./d) to diabetic rats for 21 days resulted in a significant decline in blood glucose by 67% compared to diabetic control rats (P < 0.05). The altered activities of glucokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD), and acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC) in the livers of diabetic rats were reversed significantly to near-normal levels by the administration of RRP (P < 0.05). Among the three RRP extracts, RRP100 was the most effective in terms of hypoglycemic action. However, the administration of RRP to diabetic rats did not improve insulin production. The modulatory effects of RRP100 on the attenuation of carbohydrate enzyme activities appear to hold promise for widespread use for the treatment of diabetes in the future.

      • Identification of Na-P Hydroxysodality Transfered from Korean Natural Zeolite by Selected Area Electron Diffraction of Transmittan

        NaOH와 함께 550℃에서 2시간 소성한 뒤 100℃에서 40시간 수열 처리한 한국산 저질 천연 제오라이트로부터 합성된 고성능 제오라이트의 동정은 X-선 회절과 전자 현미경의 관찰로서 확실히 결론 지을수 없었다. 이러한 합성 제오라이트의 완전한 동정을 위하여 주사형 전자 현미경을 사용한 제한 전자 회절 방법이 도입되었다. 이 방법으로부터 4M상당의 NaOH로 소성한 뒤 40시간 동안 수열처리된 시료는 소량의 hydroxysodalite를 수반하는 Na-P zeolite로 동정되었다. The product modified from Korean natural zeolite by hydrothermal treatment for 40 hours at 100℃ was not identified clearly about the kind of its crystals with X-ray diffraction pattern and scanning electron micrograph because a diagnostic XRD peak for phillipsite and that for hydroxysodalite were overlaped. For the identification of such unknown peak, the pattern of selected area electron diffraction using a transmittance electron microscope was detected From the result, the product was identified to Na-P coexisting a small amout of hydroxysodalite.

        Selective Adsorption of NH4+ and Cu2+ on Korean Natural Zeolite in Their Dilute Solutions

        For investigating the effectiveness of Korean natural zeolite for removal of NH₄^+ in waste waters containing NH₄^+ and Cu^(2+), the adsorption of NH₄^+ and Cu^(2+) by three Korean natural zeolite samples, which contained mordenite and/or clinoptilolite, was measured by adding solutions containing NH₄^+ and Cu^(2+) or both at a concentration range from 1 to 7 mmol(+)/L of each cation. In the solutions, the zeolite samples adsorbed more amounts of NH₄^+ than Cu^(2+). By seven successive equilibrations, Korean natural zeolites adsorbed NH₄^+ corresponding to 23∼33% of those cation exchange capacity from the solution containing both NH₄^+ and Cu^(2+) at 3 mmol(+)/L of each cation. Whereas, the corresponding adsorption of Cu^(2+) was 17-27% of the CEC. Korean natural zeolite exhibited selectivity for NH₄^+ but not for Cu^(2+). Nevertheless, it using as a soil amendment after removing of NH₄^+ in waste waters should be carefully controlled on the application rate.

      • Recent Studies on Zeolite Synthesized from Natural or Industrial Wasted Alluminosilicates and a Prospect for Their Application on a Process Purified Wastewater

        폐수내에 함유되어 있는 부영양화 이온의 제거에 이용될수 있는 zeolite의 효과적인 합성에 대한 몇가지의 주안점과 그것의 향후 전망을 검토하였다. 합성 원료는 smectite, kaolin, 천연zeolite, 화산재, fly asy 및 연탄재등이 적합하다. 특히 화산재, 연탄재, 및 fly ash 등의 활용은 환경 폐기물의 제거 측면에서도 아주 긍정적 이다. 이러한 물질은 원료 구입에 따른 경제적인 부담이 거의 없다. 가성소다를 이용한 알카리 수열처리법은 공정이 비교적 간단하며 상압에서 비교적 짧은 시간에 zeolite가 합성된다. 폐수가 끝난 zeolite는 토양개량제 혹은 비료로 재활용 될 수 있다. 따라서 향후 우수한 수처리제로서 주목을 받을 것으로 추정된다. 그러나 이것은 고온 및 강한 산성 용액에는 용해하는 단점이 있기 때문에 보완 연구가 계속되어야 할것이다. As a adsorbent for removing such nutrient-cation as NH_4+ or K^+ in domestic or livestock waste water, which is one of main materials to enrich river water with nutritiously, synthetic zeolite was reviewed. Alluminosilicate wastes like clay minerals, fly ash and anthracite briquette ash were suggested as the effetive starting materials for zeolite synthesis. Its synthetic method and some technical factors were discussed. With foresight about effectiveness of its application on the process of waste water purification, some problems modified with it was also estimated.

        흑삼을 함유한 한방소재 화장품의 주름개선 효과

        맥문동, 차가버섯, 감초, 보기보혈(백출, 백복령, 당귀, 숙지황, 천궁, 작약)의 한방약재에 ginsenoside Rg3가 강화된 흑삼을 첨가한 토너와 로션을 제조하여 주름개선 효과를 평가하였다. 평균연령 42.5세의 한국인 중년여성 6명 을 대상으로 토너사용 후 로션사용으로 매일 2회씩(아침, 저녁) 4주간 연속 사용하도록 한 다음, 실험 4주 후에 눈가 주름의 모사판을 제작하여 영상 분석하였다. 또한 연구책임자가 시료의 피부 안전성을 관찰하기 위해 육안 검사도 함 께 수행하였다. 눈꼬리 주름 모사판 영상분석 결과, 토너와 로션 사용 4주 후 주름 R1은 3.15±0.35에서 2.28±0.22, R2는 2.99±0.37에서 2.13±0.21, R3는 2.09±0.31에서 1.56±0.18, R4는0.37±0.05에서 0.29±0.03, R5는 0.89±0.1에서 0.75±0.06로 유의하게 감소하여(P<0.05), 본 시료는 주름개선에 효과 있는 것으로 확인되었다. This study evaluated anti-wrinkle effect using toner and lotion containing ginsenoside Rg3 enriched black ginseng in oriental medicine like Liriope platy phyllla, Inonotus obliquus, Glycyrrhiza glabra and nourishing of the blood and energy(Atractylodes japonica, Poria cocos Wolf, Angelica gigas, Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, Cnidii Rhizoma, Paeonia lactiflora). 6 female adults on average at the age of 42.5 applied lotion after toner under the normal conditions of use on the face including crow's feed area, twice a day (in the morning and evening) for 4weeks. After 4 weeks, the replica of eye wrinkle was made and analyzed the image. The result was decreased in R1(3.15±0.35 to 2.28±0.22), R2(2.99±0.37 to 2.13±0.21), R3(2.09±0.31 to 1.56±0.18), R4(0.37±0.05 to 0.29±0.03), and R5(0.89±0.1 to 0.75±0.06)(P<0.05). Therefore, oriental medicine cosmetics containing black ginseng may play a role anti-wrinkle.

        Scopolamine 유도 치매동물모델에서 고려인삼(백삼, 홍삼 및 흑삼)의 기억력 개선 효과

        본 연구에서는 백삼이나 홍삼의 기억력 개선 효과 연구를 기초로 흑삼의 기억력 개선효과 여부를 판단하고자 scopolamine으로 유도된 시험동물에게 7주간 시료 물질(백삼, WG; 홍삼, RG; 흑삼, BG) 추출액을 투여한 후, 행동학적인 평가 및 뇌 조직 내 malondialdehyde 농도, ChAT 활성 변 화를 비교 분석하여 기억력 및 학습능력 손상에 대한 개선효과를 알아보고자 하였다. 수동회피시험에서 BG군과 RG군의 latency time이 scopolamine 투여한 PC군(positive control)에 비해서 유의적으로 길어지는 결과를 나타냈다. 수중미로시험에서도 BG군과 RG군의 scopolamine에 의한 기억 손상이 유의적으로 개선되어 NC군의 escape latency 수준 정도로 낮아짐을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 probe test에서도 BG군과 RG군에서 장기 기억력 손상이 유의적으로 개선됨이 확인되었다. BG군과 RG군의 뇌조직 ChAT 효소 활성은 PC군에 비해 각각 42%, 71% 수준의 유의성 있는 활성증가를 보였다. 지질 과산화도 malondialdehyde 측정 결과에서 PC군 대비 RG군과 BG군에서 각각 37%, 33% 수준의 유의성 있는 감소를 보였다. 이상의 결과를 요약하면 시험물질 가운데 흑삼의 반복 경구투여는 scopolamine으로 유도된 흰쥐에서 기억력 감퇴를 개선하는 데 가장 효과적인 것으로 사료된다. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism and effects of different types of ginseng on memory improvement in an experimental rat model. In this study, SD rats were induced for memory deficits through scopolamine treatment (1 mg/kg, i.p.) then administrated with ginseng extract for 7 weeks. The rats were divided into five groups: saline (1 mL/kg, NC: negative control), white ginseng (300 mg/kg, WG), red ginseng (300 mg/kg, RG), black ginseng (300 mg/kg, BG), and scopolamine (1 mg/kg, PC: positive control). The step through latency of the BG and RG groups was significantly longer than the PC group in the retention trial of multiple trial passive avoidance test. In the spatial reference memory triads of the Morris water maze test, the latency time of BG and RG was significantly lower than the PC group. In addition, in the prove test, the time spent in the platform quadrant of BG and RG groups were significantly longer than the PC group. Brain choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) activities BG and RG groups significantly increased compared to other groups. On the other hand, the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) were significantly lower in the BG and RG groups compared to other groups. These result suggested that black ginseng could be useful to enhance learning memory and cognitive function by regulation of cholinergic enzymes.
