Diaporthe eleutharrhenae sp. nov. Associated with a Critically Endangered Liana in China

A new fungus isolated from the leaves of Eleutharrhena macrocarpa in southern Yunnan, China is described using morphological and molecular evidence. Phylogenetic trees based on the combined nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS), translation elongation factor-1α (TEF1), and β-tubulin gene (TUB2) sequences showed that Diaporthe eleutharrhenae sp. nov. is sister to Diaporthe chinensis N.I. de Silva, Lumyong & K.D. Hyde and morphologically differs in shorter alpha conidia (5–8.5 × 1.5–2 µm) and the presence of beta conidia. This study also resolves a nomenclatural problem, as two taxa were published using the same name. To avoid confusion, the unrelated D. chinensis H. Dong, J. W. Xia & X. G. Zhang is here renamed as D. dongii (H. Dong, J. W. Xia & X. G. Zhang) S. J. Song & Landrein, sp. nov. in honor of the author that described this species. Study and description of fungi associated with threatened tropical species could help to understand their ecology as well as the potential spread of fungi onto cultivated crop species.

The effects of fucosylated chondroitin sulphate from sea cucumber (CHS) on inhibition of pancreatic islet apoptosis in high-fat high-sucrose diet (HFSD)-induced insulin resistant mice were studied for 19 weeks. CHS treatment significantly (p<0.05) decreased fasting blood glucose, insulin, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α levels, and increased the serum adiponectin level, improved insulin resistance, and repaired HFSD-injured islets of langerhans, compared with controls. CHS supplementation significantly (p<0.05) inhibited pancreas cell apoptosis via reduction of cytochrome c, caspase 9, and caspase 3 mRNA expressions, cytochrome c release into the cytoplasm, and caspase 9 and cleaved-caspase 3 protein expressions, compared with controls. These effects were associated with upregulation of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL mRNA and protein expressions, and downregulation of Bax and t-Bid mRNA and protein expressions. Combination treatments with CHS and rosiglitazone synergistically protected pancreatic islets. CHS improves insulin resistance and protects islets of langerhans from apoptosis via inactivation of the intrinsic mitochondrial pathway.
Cyclooxygenase-2 Polymorphisms and Susceptibility to Colorectal Cancer: A Meta-Analysis

Purpose: Four polymorphisms, -765G>C, -1195G>A, 8473T>C, and Val511Ala, in the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) gene were identified to be associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. However, the results are inconsistent. The objective of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the association between these four polymorphisms and the risk of CRC. Materials and Methods: All eligible case-control studies published up to December 2012 on the association between the four polymorphisms of COX-2 and CRC risk were identified by searching PubMed and Web of Science. The CRC risk associated with the four polymorphisms of the COX-2 gene was estimated for each study by odds ratio (OR) together with its 95% confidence interval (CI), respectively. Results: A total of 15 case-control studies were included. Overall, no evidence has indicated that the -1195A allele, -765C allele, 8473C allele, and 511Ala allele are associated with susceptibility to CRC (-1195G>A: OR=1.11, 95% CI: 0.82-1.51, p=0.78; -765G>C: OR=1.08, 95% CI: 0.96-1.21, p=0.07; 8473T>C: OR=1.03, 95% CI: 0.89-1.18, p=0.91; Val511Ala:OR=0.71, 95% CI: 0.46-1.09, p=0.94). However, stratified analysis with ethnicity indicated that individuals with -765GC or GC/CC genotypes had an increased risk of CRC among Asian populations (GC vs. GG: OR=1.05, 95% CI: 0.87-1.28, p=0.03; GC+CC vs. GG: OR=1.08, 95% CI: 0.96-1.21, p=0.07). Conclusion: This meta-analysis indicated that -765G>C polymorphism was significantly associated with susceptibility to CRC in Asian populations.
Bonded flake MoS2 solid lubricant coating: An effective protection against fretting wear

The multiple advantages of flake MoS2 are of great significance for improving the fretting wear resistanceof bonded solid lubricant coating. Herein, the coating was constructed with liquid-phase exfoliated flakeMoS2 as lubricating filler and epoxy resin as binder. The tangential fretting characteristics for the contactof AISI 52,100 steel ball against the as-prepared coating on the AISI 1045 steel were investigated underthree displacement amplitude. Results show that the average friction coefficient and wear rate of thecoating with flake MoS2 maximumly reduce by 45.5% and 89.8% than those with bulk MoS2. Moreover,the fretting regime is regulated by the coatings with different composition and performance. Such excellentanti-fretting features depend on: (a) the intrinsic shearing properties of flake MoS2; (b) the repairingeffect on the worn area; (c) the formation of uniform transfer film.
