Field implementation of low-cost RFID-based crack monitoring using machine learning

As civil infrastructure continues to age, the extension of service life has become a financially attractive solution due to cost savings on reconstruction projects. Efforts to increase the service life of structures include non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques. Nonetheless, visual inspection is more frequently used due to high equipment cost from other techniques and federal biennial inspection requirement. Recently, low-cost Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) have drawn attention for crack monitoring; however, it was yet to be implemented in the field. This paper presents a crack monitoring algorithm using a developed RFID-based sensing system employing machine learning under temperature variations for field implementation. Two reinforced concrete buildings were used as testbeds: a parking garage, and a residential building with crumbling foundation phenomenon. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN)-based crack monitoring architecture is developed as the machine learning algorithm and the results are compared to a baseline model. The results show promise for field implementation of crack monitoring on building structures.

Online shopping is a popular activity among international students in South Korea due to its convenience and attractive promotional offers. This study focuses on the impact of the modern marketing mix (7Ps) on Coupang's customer satisfaction among international students in Busan, South Korea. Data was collected from 127 students at Kyungsung University through survey responses. The study utilized exploratory factor analysis and regression using SPSS software for data analysis. The results suggest that online shopping had the most significant impact on customer satisfaction, followed by product, people, and promotion. However, price, place, and physical evidence did not positively influence customer satisfaction in this case. This study provides valuable insights into factors that affect customer satisfaction and can be used as a reference for future studies on online shopping behavior and satisfaction, particularly for Coupang.
A Novel Binary Ant Colony Optimization: Application to the Unit Commitment Problem of Power Systems

This paper proposes a novel binary ant colony optimization (NBACO) method. The proposed NBACO is based on the concept and principles of ant colony optimization (ACO), and developed to solve the binary and combinatorial optimization problems. The concept of conventional ACO is similar to Heuristic Dynamic Programming. Thereby ACO has the merit that it can consider all possible solution sets, but also has the demerit that it may need a big memory space and a long execution time to solve a large problem. To reduce this demerit, the NBACO adopts the state probability matrix and the pheromone intensity matrix. And the NBACO presents new updating rule for local and global search. The proposed NBACO is applied to test power systems of up to 100-unit along with 24-hour load demands.

This paper aims to add three new species to Bhutan’s floral database: Euonymus fimbriatus Wall., Euonymus fortunei (Turcz.) Hand.-Mazz. from the Celastraceae family, and Dalbergia hancei Benth. from the Fabaceae family. We provide descriptions and the spatial distributions of these newly found species.
