        3D Sensing System for Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy-Based Metal Scrap Identification

        Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an analysis technique that determines the elemental composition of a target material. Metal scraps have a range of shapes and are contaminated with other substances such as paint or dirt. This makes it difficult to recognize each piece of metal scrap accurately and to obtain clear LIBS emission spectra of the target metals. In this study, two image processing algorithms are proposed to measure the three-dimensional shapes of metal scraps and to calculate the optimized (i.e., relatively clean and flat) surface areas of metal scraps. It was confirmed that 25% higher maximum classification accuracy was achieved when LIBS spectra were acquired from optimized rather than non-optimized (i.e., contaminated) surfaces.

      • Electrical characteristics analysis of 18650 lithium-ion battery pack with the earthquake vibration condition

        Nowadays, the usage of lithium-ion batteries is an increase highly for electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems (ESSs), and portable electrical devices. The electrical characteristics of lithium-ion batteries are changed by discharge/charge current magnitudes, depth of discharge (DoD), environment temperature, degradation, and so on. In addition, the mechanical stress such as vibration and shock are degraded due to deformation of electrode or stress of electrolyte. The previous literatures of vibration are limited to the conditions of electric vehicle and satellites. These vibrations are tested on a single axis. However, earthquake vibration is applied to three axes simultaneously. A lot of literatures have analyzed the change of single cell’s electrical characteristics with mathematical analysis method. In this paper, lithium-ion battery module which is consisted of 14 series and 20 parallel by 18650 cylindrical cells is tested to analyze the change of electrical characteristics such as cell-to-cell voltage difference, internal resistance, discharge capacity and temperature difference in module by the earthquake vibration.

        Review of state-of-the-art battery state estimation technologies for battery management systems of stationary energy storage systems

        Lithium-ion batteries have recently been in the spotlight as the main energy source for the energy storage devices used in the renewable energy industry. The main issues in the use of lithium-ion batteries are satisfaction with the design life and safe operation. Therefore, battery management has been required in practice. In accordance with this demand, battery state indicators such as the state-of-charge (SOC), state-of-health (SOH), state-of-function (SOF), and state-of-temperature (SOT) have been widely applied. The use of these indicators ensures safe operation without overcharging and over-discharging. In addition, it can also help satisfy the design life. This paper presents a literature review of battery state indicators over the last three years and proposes the requirement of state-of-the-art battery state indicators. It also suggests future developments for battery management system (BMS) in stationary energy storage systems (ESSs).

        Arginine Deiminase Enhances MCF-7 Cell Radiosensitivity by Inducing Changes in the Expression of Cell Cycle-related Proteins

        After successful clinical application, arginine deiminase (ADI) has been proposed to be a new cancer therapeutic. In the present study, we examined the effect of ADI in combination with ionizing radiation (IR) on MCF-7 cell growth and clonogenic cell death. Cell growth was inhibited by IR in a dose-dependent manner and ADI enhanced the radiosensitivity. ADI itself did not suppress the growth of MCF-7 cells due to the high level of expression of argininosuccinate synthetase (ASS), which convert citrulline, a product of arginine degradation by ADI, to arginine. Previously, it was suggested that ammonia, another product of arginine degradation by ADI, is the main cause of the growth inhibition of irradiated hepatoma cells contaminated with ADI-expressing mycoplasma [van Rijn et al. (2003)]. However, we found that ammonia is not the only factor that enhances radiosensitivity, as enhancement was also observed in the absence of ammonia. In order to identify the enhancing effect, levels of ASS and proteins related to the cell cycle were examined. ASS was unchanged by ADI plus IR, but p21 (a CDK inhibitor) was upregulated and c-Myc downregulated. These findings indicate that changes in the expressions of cell cycle proteins are involved in the enhancement of radiosensitivity by ADI. We suggest that ADI is a potential adjunct to cancer therapy.

        보림사 철조비로자나불좌상 조성 주체와 배경

        신라하대는 잦은 왕위 찬탈과 교체로 왕실이 무력해지면서 새로운 세력의 대두와 함께 ‘철’이라는 신소재, ‘지권인’이라는 새로운 도상을 가진 불상이 ‘지방’의 ‘선종사찰’에 봉안된 것으로 알려졌다. 하지만 이후 금석문 등의 연구를 통해 신라 하대 왕실과 지방 선종사찰의 선승이 긴밀한 관계를 맺었으며, 지방 소재 사찰의 상당수 철불·비로자나불상이 신라하대 왕실 후원에 의해 제작된 것으로 파악되고 있다. 신라하대 대표적 철조비로자나불상인 장흥 보림사 철조비로자나불좌상은 뒷면의 명문을 통해 제작연대가 밝혀진 우리나라 최초의 기년명 철불이다. 지권인의 수인을 갖추었고, 조상기를 담은 명문이 불상에 양각되어 있기에 보림사 상의 존명이나 제작 시기, 조성 주체 등 별다른 논란의 여지가 없는 듯 보였다. 하지만 보림사 상 명문에는 김수종이 정왕, 즉 헌안왕에게 불상 주조를 청하였고, 왕이 칙서를 내려 허락하였다는 내용이 있어 혼란을 야기한다. 구체적 이름과 함께 불상 주조를 청하는 적극적인 모습의 “金遂宗”과 칙서를 내려 불상 주조를 허락하는 헌안왕은 각각의 이유로 보림사 상의 조성 주체로 보이며, 이는 보림사 상의 조성 주체를 지방세력 또는 신라하대 왕실로 추정하는 근거가 되었기 때문이다. 이 글에서는 조성주체로 헌안왕을 지목하였다. 보림사 상과 헌안왕의 연계성은 앞서 언급한 보림사 상의 명문 뿐 아니라 〈북탑지〉(870년)와 〈장흥 보림사 보조선 사탑비〉(884년)를 통해서도 확인 가능하기 때문이다. 또한 불상의 형식 및 양식, 완성도 측면에서 보림사 상이 중앙 장인들에 의해 보편적 양식과 동시대 유행 양식의 영향을 받은 것으로 보았다. 보림사가 위치한 당시 무주지역은 옛 백제의 영토이며, 신라하대 최대 반란인 김헌창의 난(822년) 가담지이자 장보고의 청해진(828년)이 설치된 지역이었다. 장보고 살해(841년)와 청해진 해체(851년) 이후 지역에서 반왕실 정서가 팽배하였으나, 김양이 이를 평정하였다. 본 글에서는 857년 김양의 사망 직후 헌안왕이 체징에게 보림사로 이거를 청한 점에 주목하였다. 즉 헌안왕은 보림사와 체징을 후원함으로써 김양 사후 동요할 수 있는 무주지역 민심을 다독이고 수습하여 정치적 안정을 도모한 것으로 파악하였는데, 이와 같은 왕실과 지방 사찰 선승의 정치적 관계는 다수의 연구에서 발표된 것 같이 당시 일반적인 현상이었다. 왕실에서는 지역 사찰을 후원하면서 유력 선승과의 친분, 왕실의 건재와 위상을 공포하기에 효과적인 시각적 매체를 선종 사찰에 조성하고자 하였다. 보림사 뿐 아니라 문성왕~헌안왕대 왕실의 후원을 받은 선종 사찰 실상사와 성주사에도 절대 왕권의 표상이라 할 수 있는 장육의 노사나상이 공통적으로 조성되었기 때문이다. 장육의 노사나상이 신라하대 왕실의 후원을 받은 서남지역 선종 사찰에, 9세기 중반 집중 조성된 사실은 이 상들이 왕실의 왕권강화 의도 하에 제작되어 봉안되었음을 시사한다. 헌안왕의 보림사 상 조성은 기본적으로 지역 유력 선승 후원이나 불상 조성을 통해 왕권 강화를 시도한 신라하대 왕실의 불사와 상통한다. 하지만 헌안왕의 불사는 무주지역을 특정하여 체징의 보림사 이거를 청하고, 장육의 노사나 불상을 조성하고, 경주 진골귀족의 참여를 독려하는 한편 중앙기관 선교성에 예편하는 등 보림사 중창 전반을 기획한 것으로 추정된다는 점에서 특징적이다. The Late Silla Period is known as a time when the royal court became weak due to frequent transfer and usurpation of the throne, and when regional powers rose to prominence. A style of Buddhist art that is clearly differentiated from that of the preceding period, the use of iron as a new material, a new iconography in the form of the bodhyangi mudra, and the introduction of Chan Buddhism gave rise to the belief that the regional powers were responsible for the Buddhist works in this period. The iron seated Vairocana Buddha statue of Borimsa Temple has also been perceived in this light. However, the inscription on the Borimsa statue mentions King Heonan. The inscription states that King Heonan was petitioned about casting a Buddha statue, and that the king gave permission to do so by a royal writ, thus suggesting the involvement of the royal court. The present paper will focus on this part to shed light on who was the principal sponsor and examine the reasons for making the statue at the Borimsa Temple. First, we identified King Heonan as the principal agent behind the statue at the Borimsa Temple. The connection between the statue and King Heonan can be affirmed not only through the aforementioned inscription on the statue, but also through the Stele of Seon Master Bojo (884) and the North Pagoda Record (870) at the Borimsa Temple. Moreover, a comparison of the Borimsa statue with others in terms of its form, style, and execution shows that it was influenced by the general style that prevailed at the time among artisans at the center. Next, the background to King Heonan rebuilding and sponsoring of the Borimsa Temple was examined. The Muju region where the Borimsa Temple was located, anti-royal sentiments prevailed in the region. By supporting Chejing and the Borimsa Temple, King Heonan coaxed and placated the people in the Muju region after the death of Gim Yang, thereby promoting political stability. The royal court sought to create visual media in Seon Buddhist temples that would be effective in proclaiming its power and status, and its close relationship with influential Seon monks in the regions. This is evident not only at the Borimsa Temple, but also at other Seon Buddhist temples such as Silsangsa and Seongjusa Temple. Given that these large Vairocana Buddha statues are found clustered in the mid-9th century, and in the Seon Buddhist temples in the southwestern region that received the support of the Late Silla royal court, there is strong indication that they were constructed with the aim of strengthening the authority of the royal court. The findings of this study contradict the prevailing perception that those responsible for making the Vairocana Buddha statues in Seon Buddhist temples were the regional powers in the mid-9th century. It is hoped that this study will provide an occasion for reconsidering the Late Silla royal court and the connections between Vairocana Buddha statues, Seon Buddhism, and regional powers at the time.
