As the number of steel bridges that have been in service for more than 40 years in Japan increases, several types of fatigue damage have been recognized. In particular, damage to web gap plates is often found in metropolitan expressway. In order to implement appropriate repair and reinforcement procedures for damage caused by displacement-induced fatigue, it is important to determine the deformation that results from the passage of vehicles that leads to high strain. Therefore, in the present study, the causes of fatigue damage in web gap plates in an in-service steel girder bridge were investigated using contact displacement gauges, tri-axial strain gauges and microelectromechanical systems inertial measurement units. From the displacement and strain measurements, it was found that most of the strain that occurs in the web gap plate are due to slab deflection. Furthermore, the sign (positive or negative) of the strain response was shown to depend on the driving lane.
Power-Flow Simulator with Visualization Function Based on IEEE Common Data Format

In this paper, a power flow simulator, which visualizes power flow and system configuration, is proposed and implemented. Generally, it is necessary to prepare a text file with power-system descriptions, which is one of the barriers for power-flow simulations. The proposed simulator has a function of automatic generations of IEEE common data format files from user-drawn power-system diagrams. Therefore, it is possible for users to carry out simulations only by drawing power system on display. In addition, the proposed simulator also has a function that power-system diagram is illustrated automatically from an IEEE common data format file. By using this function, it is possible to visualize amounts and directions of power flows on the bus-system diagram, which helps users to comprehend network dynamics intuitively. Because the proposed simulator allows including renewable-resource generators in power systems, it is useful to evaluate the power distribution system. It is shown in this paper that the proposed simulator can make IEEE common data format files correctly and illustrate intuitive power flow.
Investigation Into the Design of the Dual Temperature Reefer Container using CFD

In the transport of fruit and vegetables by ship, it is necessary to maintain freshness for a long period compared to air freight. Since the optimal storage temperature varies depending on the item, it is preferable to provide several temperature zones in one container. The objective of this study was to develop a dual temperature reefer container which temperature was set at 0°C and 10°C, and the optimum air conditioning design was investigated by using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) to analyze thermal fluid. As a result, it was clarified that two rooms were adjusted to 0°C and 10°C in summer condition and winter condition. For opening direction of the return port, in consideration of the occurrence of condensation on the load, the upper opening was preferable. In addition, it was shown that it was necessary to improve such as extending the outlet of the duct to avoid a low temperature injury.
Mechanism of B-Cell Receptor-Induced Phosphorylation and Activation of Phospholipase C-γ2

<B>ABSTRACT</B><P>Phospholipase C-γ2 (PLC-γ2) plays an important role in B-cell signaling. Phosphorylation of various tyrosine residues of PLC-γ2 has been implicated in regulation of its lipase activity. With the use of antibodies specific for each of the putative phosphorylation sites, we have now shown that PLC-γ2 is phosphorylated on Y753, Y759, and Y1217 in response to engagement of the B-cell receptor in Ramos cells, as well as in murine splenic B cells. In cells stimulated maximally via this receptor, the extent of phosphorylation of Y1217 was three times that of Y753 or of Y759. Stimulation of Jurkat T cells or platelets via their immunoreceptors also elicited phosphorylation of Y753 and Y759 but not that of Y1217. A basal level of phosphorylation of Y753 was apparent in unstimulated lymphocytes. The extent of phosphorylation of Y753 and Y759, but not that of Y1217, correlated with the lipase activity of PLC-γ2. Examination of the effects of various pharmacological inhibitors and of RNA interference in Ramos cells suggested that Btk is largely, but not completely, responsible for phosphorylation of Y753 and Y759, whereas phosphorylation of Y1217 is independent of Btk. Finally, phosphorylation of Y1217 and that of Y753 and Y759 occurred on different PLC-γ2 molecules.</P>

Due to the rapid deterioration of reinforced concrete decks (RCD) under the combined eff ects of deck overloads, weather and salts, the orthotropic steel decks (OSD) that are light weight and require less construction time are being used increasingly to replace old deteriorated decks. In this paper, a numerical investigation was carried out to study the eff ect of reduction in superstructure weight on the earthquake resistance of elevated girder bridges when an existing RCD was being replaced by an OSD. Firstly, an eigenvalue analysis was carried out to study the eff ect of superstructure weight on the global vibrational characteristics of the bridge and then, the evaluation of seismic performances of both the bridge models were carried out by performing a series of non-linear dynamic analysis with input earthquake data in the longitudinal and transverse directions separately and simultaneously. The behavior of the pier bases was examined by monitoring the displacement responses and plastic strains during earthquakes. It was found that the bridge model with OSD exhibits a shorter period of vibrations and a huge improvement in the seismic performance of the bridge was observed by replacing the existing RCD with the OSD. The analysis results could be useful in fi nding a solution for seismic retrofi t of existing girder bridges.
