UnveilingSources of Stripe Rust Resistance in Diverse Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Germplasm Using Narrow Down Methodology: A Proof of Concept

        Saurabh Badoni,Reeku Chaudhary,Ravi Shekhar,Shweta Badoni,Ekhlaque Ahmad,Rishi Pal Gangwar,Kashi Nath Tiwari,Rajendra Singh Rawat,Deepshikha,Jai Prakash Jaiswal 한국작물학회 2017 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.20 No.5

Stripe rust of wheat caused by the fungal pathogen is a destructive foliar disease of wheat. Thus, it is crucial step to characterize the resistant germplasm for stripe rust in a diverse germplasm pool for their ultimate utilization in efficient crop rust resistance breeding. In the present study, we followed two pronged strategies involving integrated phenotypic and molecular characterization of 440 diverse wheat germplasm lines for rust resistance. The germplasm panel was extensively evaluated in field epiphytotic conditions during two consecutive years. After rigorous screening, 72 accessions were successfully revealed as resistant to moderately resistant to stripe rust. Subsequently, entries were then evaluated for their field agronomicperformances, considering prerequisites for serving as a donor germplasm, particularly for yield and 33 potential rust-resistant accessions were identified. Furthermore, to detect the sources of resistance, accessions were molecular characterized for potential race-specific resistance genes Yr5, Yr10,Yr15, and effective adult plant resistance (APR) gene Lr34/Yr18/pm38. We identified the 22 accessions possessing one or more single resistance genes and two accessions were observed with at least three of them. Moreover, Lr34/Yr18/pm38 was determined to confer resistance when observed along with any of the race-specific genes. Thus, the study not only provides proof of concept methodology to identify candidate resistant sources from large germplasm collections but simultaneouslyconfirmed the contribution of combining race-specific andnon-specific APR genes. The finding could further assist in the potential deployment of resistant genes directly into the stripe rust breeding program by involving marker-assisted approaches.

Treatment of Domestic Wastewater by the Application of Electrochemical Membrane Bioreactor and Generation of Bioelectricity

Yadav, Saurabh,Kamsonlian, Suantak,Pal, Shubham The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering C 2022 공업화학 Vol.33 No.5

The need for obtaining treated wastewater that meets high quality standards for discharge or reuse necessitates the use of highly efficient wastewater treatment techniques. In the present study, experiments have been carried out to reduce the concentration level of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total dissolved solids (TDS) from the wastewater sample. Treatment of sample of a real municipal wastewater collected from a sewage treatment plant (STP) was carried out in an electrochemical membrane bioreactor (EMBR). The EMBR was operated continuously for five days, and readings were taken at regular intervals. This paper has experimental results conducted in EMBR that indicate reduction of BOD, COD, and TDS levels of up to 32.25%, 29.25%, and 31.93%, respectively. Further, it was observed that a current of magnitude of 0.00752 mA was generated due to the metabolic activities of bacteria present in municipal wastewater, which gradually decreased day by day due to the decay of bacteria.

Are Truelove and Witts criteria for diagnosing acute severe colitis relevant for the Indian population?A prospective study

        Saransh Jain,Saurabh Kedia,Sawan Bopanna,Dawesh P Yadav,Sandeep Goyal,Peush Sahni,Sujoy Pal,Nihar Ranjan Dash,Govind Makharia,Simon P. L. Travis,Vineet Ahuja 대한장연구학회 2018 Intestinal Research Vol.16 No.1

Background/Aims: Truelove and Witts criteria have been used to define acute severe colitis since the 1950s. However, hemoglobin(an additional criterion of the definition) levels in the general population in developing countries are lower than in the population of developed countries. We aimed to determine the relevance of Truelove and Witts criteria in the Indianpopulation. Methods: Consecutive patients with acute severe colitis satisfying the Truelove and Witts criteria, hospitalized ata single center between April 2015 and December 2016 were included. All patients received intravenous corticosteroids and 16 required colectomy. The hemoglobin levels at admission were subsequently excluded from the classification criteria, and the effect this had on the criteria for diagnosis was determined. Results: Out of 61 patients of acute severe colitis diagnosed according to the original Truelove and Witts criteria, 12 patients (20%) had 1 additional criterion, 33 (54%) had 2 additionalcriteria and 16 (26%) had 3 or more additional criteria in addition to 6 or more blood stained stools on admission. On excludinghemoglobin as an additional criterion from the Truelove and Witts definition, all patients still met the criteria for acute severecolitis. Conclusions: Truelove and Witts criteria can be used to define acute severe colitis in India, despite lower mean hemoglobinin the native population.

Predictive factors for malignancy in undiagnosed isolated small bowel strictures

( Ujjwal Sonika ),( Sujeet Saha ),( Saurabh Kedia ),( Nihar Ranjan Dash ),( Sujoy Pal ),( Prasenjit Das ),( Vineet Ahuja ),( Peush Sahni ) 대한장연구학회 2017 Intestinal Research Vol.15 No.4

Background/Aims: Patients with small bowel strictures have varied etiologies, including malignancy. Little data are available on the demographic profiles and etiologies of small bowel strictures in patients who undergo surgery because of intestinal obstruction but do not have a definitive pre-operative diagnosis. Methods: Retrospective data were analyzed for all patients operated between January 2000 and October 2014 for small bowel strictures without mass lesions and a definite diagnosis after imaging and endoscopic examinations. Demographic parameters, imaging, endoscopic, and histological data were extracted from the medical records. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to identify factors that could differentiate between intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) and Crohn’s disease (CD) and between malignant and benign strictures. Results: Of the 7,425 reviewed medical records, 89 met the inclusion criteria. The most common site of strictures was the proximal small intestine (41.5%). The most common histological diagnoses in patients with small bowel strictures were ITB (26.9%), CD (23.5%), non-specific strictures (20.2%), malignancy (15.5%), ischemia (10.1%), and other complications (3.4%). Patients with malignant strictures were older than patients with benign etiologies (47.6±15.9 years vs. 37.4±16.4 years, P=0.03) and age >50 years had a specificity for malignant etiology of 80%. Only 7.1% of the patients with malignant strictures had more than 1 stricture and 64% had proximally located strictures. Diarrhea was the only factor that predicted the diagnosis of CD 6.5 (95% confidence interval, 1.10-38.25; P=0.038) compared with the diagnosis of ITB. Conclusions: Malignancy was the cause of small bowel strictures in approximately 16% patients, especially among older patients with a single stricture in the proximal location. Empirical therapy should be avoided and the threshold for surgical resection is low in these patients. (Intest Res 2017;15:518-523)

Prediction of phishing websites using machine learning

        Mithilesh Kumar Pandey,Munindra Kumar Singh,Saurabh Pal,B. B. Tiwari 대한공간정보학회 2023 Spatial Information Research Vol.31 No.2

With the growing popularity of the information science, more application is being integrated with websites that can be accessed directly through the internet. This has increased the possibility of attack by ill-legal persons to steal personal information. To identify a phishing assault, several strategies have been presented. However, there is still opportunity for progress in the fight against phishing. The objective of this research paper is to develop a more accurate prediction model using Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF) and Gradient Boosting Classifiers (GBC) with three features selection techniques Extra Tree (ET), Chi-Square and Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE). Since phishing websites dataset contains 89 features, therefore we have applied extra tree and chi-square, feature selection method to identify the limited important features and then recursive features elimination technique has been used to reduce the dataset up-to optimum important features. We have compared the performance of the developed model using machine learning algorithms and find the best prediction performance using GBC, followed by RF and DT. These algorithmic models capture the trends from various cases of phishing with over R-square, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Error (MAE), in each case.

Low prevalence of primary sclerosing cholangitis in patients with inflammatory bowel disease in India

        Arshdeep Singh,Vandana Midha,Vikram Narang,Saurabh Kedia,Ramit Mahajan,Pavan Dhoble,Bhavjeet Kaur Kahlon,Ashvin Singh Dhaliwal,Ashish Tripathi,Shivam Kalra,Narender Pal Jain,Namita Bansal,Rupa Banerje 대한장연구학회 2023 Intestinal Research Vol.21 No.4

Background/Aims: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) represents the most common hepatobiliary extraintestinal manifestation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). Limited data exist on PSC in patients with IBD from India. We aimed to assess the prevalence and disease spectrum of PSC in Indian patients with IBD. Methods: Database of IBD patients at 5 tertiary care IBD centers in India were analyzed retrospectively. Data were extracted and the prevalence of PSC-IBD was calculated. Results: Forty-eight patients out of 12,216 patients with IBD (9,231 UC, 2,939 CD, and 46 IBD unclassified) were identified to have PSC, resulting in a prevalence of 0.39%. The UC to CD ratio was 7:1. Male sex and pancolitis (UC) or colonic CD were more commonly associated with PSC-IBD. The diagnosis of IBD preceded the diagnosis of PSC in most of the patients. Majority of the patients were symptomatic for liver disease at diagnosis. Eight patients (16.66%) developed cirrhosis, 5 patients (10.41%), all UC, developed malignancies (3 colorectal cancer [6.25%] and 2 cholangiocarcinoma [4.16%]), and 3 patients died (2 decompensated liver disease [4.16%] and 1 cholangiocarcinoma [2.08%]) on follow-up. None of the patients mandated surgical therapy for IBD. Conclusions: Concomitant PSC in patients with IBD is uncommon in India and is associated with lower rates of development of malignancies.
