The establishment of an efficient protocol for plant regeneration and micropropagation from leaf explant cultures of Chicory, Cichorium intybus L. var. sativus. is reported. Callus formation rate appeared 100% from explant in all growth regulators, but calli formed in the prensence of naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) were appeared very compact and non-embryogenic state. The regenerated shoots were obtained from leaf explant cultures on solid MS medium containing different concentrations of cytokinins and auxin. The highest number of shoots (5.7) per explant and shoot growth (2.8cm) was obtained on MS medium containing 0.1 mg BAP L^-1 and 0.1 mg NAA L^-1. Indole acetic acid was the most suitable auxin for root formation among three auxins tested. 2,4-D had no effect on shoot and root formation.

<P>Obesity has become a major health threat in developed countries. However, current medications for obesity are limited because of their adverse effects. Interest in natural products for the treatment of obesity is thus rapidly growing. Korean Medicine (KM) is characterized by the wide use of herbal formulas. However, the combination rule of herbal formulas in KM lacks experimental evidence. According to <I>Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica</I>, the earliest book of herbal medicine, <I>Veratrum nigrum</I> (VN) has antagonistic features against <I>Panax ginseng</I> (PG), and the PG-VN pair is strictly forbidden. In this study, we have shown the effects of PG, VN, and their combination on obesity in high-fat (HF) diet-induced obese mice and in 3T3-L1 cells. PG, VN, and PG-VN combination significantly reduced weight gain and the fat pad weight in HF diet-induced obese mice. They also significantly decreased lipid accumulation and the expressions of two major adipogenesis factors, PPAR<I><I>γ</I></I> and C/EBP<I><I>α</I></I>, in 3T3-L1 cells. In addition, the PG-VN combination had synergistic effects compared with the mixture of extracts of PG and VN on inhibition of PPAR<I><I>γ</I></I> and C/EBP<I><I>α</I></I> expressions at lower doses. These results indicate a new potential anti-obese pharmacotherapy and also provide scientific evidence supporting the usage of herbal combinations instead of mixtures in KM.</P>
Effect of Coating Method on the Survival Rate of L. plantarum for Chicken Feed

This study was designed to find the most suitable method and wall material for microencapsulation of the Lactobacillus plantarum to maintain cell viability in different environmental conditions. To improve the stability of L. plantarum, we developed an encapsulation system of L. plantarum, using water-in-oil emulsion system. For the encapsulation of L. plantarum, corn starch and glyceryl monostearate were selected to form gel beads. Then 10% (w/v) of starch was gelatinized by autoclaving to transit gel state, and cooled down at 60ºC and mixed with L. plantarum to encapsulate it. The encapsulated L. plantarum was tested for the tolerance of acidic conditions at different temperatures to investigate the encapsulation ability. The study indicated that the survival rate of the microencapsulated cells in starch matrix was significantly higher than that of free cells in low pH conditions with relatively higher temperature. The results showed that corn starch as a wall material and glycerol monostearate as a gelling agent in encapsulation could play a role in the viability of lactic acid bacteria in extreme conditions. Using the current study, it would be possible to formulate a new water-in-oil system as applied in the protection of L. plantarum from the gastric conditions for the encapsulation system used in chicken feed industry.
The role of CD24 in epithelial tumor of the gastrointestinal tract

Background and Aim: CD24 is a small heavily glycosylated glycosylphosphatidylinositollinked cell surface protein, which is expressed in hematologic malignancies as well as in a large variety of solid tumors, It appears to function as a ligand of P-selectin, an adhesion molecule that is present in activated platelets and endothelial cells. The authors aimed to evaluate CD24 protein expression in adenoma and adenocarcinoma of stomach, colon and gallbladder to correlate to clinicopathologic data. Methods: The staining was evaluated as stain intensity (negative, weak-, moderate-, strong-positive) and staining patterns (membranous vs. intracytoplasmic) for statistical analysis. Results: CD24 was abundantly expressed on adenocarcinoma rather than on adenoma in colon. Moreover, the intensity of CD24 expression increased with positive nodal status in the advanced gastric carcinoma. A highly significant association of intracytoplasmic CD24 expression with adenocarcinoma of the colon and gallbladder compared to the adenoma group of those organs, respectively and with positive nodal status compared to negative nodal status of the colonic adenocarcinoma were demonstrated, Conclusions: The authors conclude that the intensity and staining pattern of CD24 is an important molecular marker for various epithelial neoplasms that could help to define malignant transformation and to prediet lymphogenous metastasis.

This study was performed to examine the in vitro toxicities which are incurred due to the mobilization metals from standard reference material (SRM) 1648, fine (PM2.5), and coarse (PM10) particulate matter collected in Seoul metropolitan area. DNA single strand breaks of approximately 74% and 62% for PM2.5 and for PM10, respectively, were observed in the presence of chelator (EDTA or citrate)/ reductant (ascorbate), as compared to the control by 2% without chelator or reductant. PM2.5 induced about 40% more carbonyl formation with proteins in the presence of EDTA/ascorbate than PM10. Therefore, more damage to biomolecules was incurred upon exposure to PM2.5 than to PM10. The treatment of a specific chelator, desferrioxamine, to the reaction mixture containing chelator plus reductant decreased the extent of damage to DNA to the level of the control, but did not substantially decrease the extent of damage to proteins. This suggests that different arrays of metals were involved in the oxidation of DNA and proteins.

In order to derive reliable propagation models for future millimeter-wave frequency indoor pico-cellular communications systems, accurate reflectivity data of building materials is necessary. The broad variety of building materials and construction codes makes accurate attenuation prediction very difficult without the support of specific construction data or measurements. This paper derives a transmission and reflection coefficient based on 13 GHz to 28 GHz measurement data. Transmission and reflection is measured by applying change in the reception angle of each building material, such as plasterboard. The transmission and reflection coefficient derived shows a correlation between frequency dependence and angle. As a result, as the reception angle is reduced, the reflected angle from the transmitter that could be received increases, showing that there is a correlation. In addition, the fundamental investigations carried out lay the foundation for radio channel–related research, which is essential for the development of future millimeter-wave communications systems.
