        Electrochemical synthesis of a novel poly(2,5-dimethoxy aniline) nanorod for ultrasensitive glucose biosensor application

        We report for the first time a rapid electrochemical synthesis of one-dimensional poly(2,5-dimethoxyaniline) nanorods (PDMA-NR) in the presence of surfactant. FE-SEM and TEM imagesconfirm the PDMA-NR formation and the average diameter of single rod sizes in the range of ~200–300 nm. An enzymatic glucose biosensor was fabricated through immobilizing glucose oxidase (GOx)into PDMA-NR matrix. The amperometric current response of PDMA-NR/GOx to glucose is linear in theconcentration range between 1 and 10 mM with a detection limit of 0.5 mM (S/N = 3). The PDMA-NR/GOxelectrode possesses high sensitivity (5.03 mA/mM), selectivity, stability, and reproducibility towardglucose.

        Molecular Cloning, Protein Expression, and Regulatory Mechanisms of the Chitinase Gene from Spodoptera littoralis Nucleopolyhedrovirus

        The cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis, is a major pest in Egypt and many countries worldwide, and causes heavy economic losses. As a result, management measures to control the spread of the worm are required. S. littoralis nucleopolyhedrovirus (SpliNPV) is one of the most promising bioagents for the efficient control of insect pests. In this study, a chitinase gene (chitA) of a 1.8 kb DNA fragment was cloned and fully characterized from SpliNPV-EG1, an Egyptian isolate. A sequence of 601 amino acids was deduced when the gene was completely sequenced with a predicted molecular mass of 67 kDa for the preprotein. Transcriptional analyses using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) revealed that chitA transcripts were detected first at 12 h post infection (hpi) and remained detectable until 168 hpi, suggesting their transcriptional regulation from a putative late promoter motif. In addition, quantitative analysis using quantitative RT-PCR showed a steady increase of 7.86-fold at 12 hpi in chitA transcription levels, which increased up to 71.4-fold at 120 hpi. An approximately 50 kDa protein fragment with chitinolytic activity was purified from ChitA-induced bacterial culture and detected by western blotting with an antirecombinant SpliNPV chitinase antibody. Moreover, purification of the expressed ChitA recombinant protein showed in vitro growth inhibition of two different fungi species, Fusarium solani and F. oxysporum, confirming that the enzyme assembly and activity was correct. The results supported the potential role and application of the SpliNPV-ChitA protein as a synergistic agent in agricultural fungal and pest control programs.

        We study the incomprssible Navier Stokes equations for theow inside contraction geometry. The governing equations are expressedin the vorticity-stream function formulations. A rectangular computationaldomain is arised by elliptic grid generation technique. The numerical solu-tion is based on a technique of automatic numerical generation of acurvilin-ear coordinate system by transforming the governing equation into compu-tational plane. The transformed equations are approximated using centraldierences and solved simultaneously by successive over relaxation itera-tion. The time dependent of the vorticity equation solved by using explicitmarching procedure. We will apply the technique on several irregular-shapes.

The time dependent of the vorticity equation solved by using explicit marching procedure. We will apply the technique on several irregular-shapes.

        A novel method for improving the microstructure and electrical properties of Pr6O11-based ZnO varistors

        The eff ects of diff erent synthesis routes and sintering temperatures on the microstructures and electrical properties of ceramic varistors (composed of ZnO doped with Pr 6O11, Co 3O4, Cr 2O3, and Nd 2O3) were investigated. Two types of samples were prepared according to the milling approach (single-mill or double-mill). Remilling the calcined powder material reduced the required sintering temperature by 100 °C, improved the microstructure of the ceramic, and enhanced the nonlinear properties of the varistor. Though the diff erent sintering temperatures and average grain sizes, both types were reach ≈ 98% of the theoretical density. The highest nonlinear coeffi cient value was ≈ 26.5, obtained from the fi rst sample of the double- mill batch. As the sintering temperature increased, the nonlinearity diminished rapidly in the case of single-mill samples compared to double-mill ones. Similar behavior was noted for the varistor (breakdown) voltage. The thermionic emission behavior at the pre-breakdown region and the conduction mechanism through Schottky barriers were applied to fi nd further electrical parameters.

        Reinforcing of extruded ceramic Raschig rings by dispersive particles: the effects of alumina and zirconium silicate on the reliability of a ceramic body

        Most packed beds contain heterogeneous microstructures with relatively big defects and pores, causing a large reduction in compressive strength and reliability. Recently, the need for fabricating reliable ceramic Raschig rings with high strength has increased due to their applications in processes where a high diametrical stress is applied. In manufacturing these materials,the strength and reliability are basically affected by the mixing ratio of reinforcing materials such as alumina and zirconium silicate. However, the firing process should be controlled to achieve the desired properties. Therefore, the objective of this investigation was to evaluate the firing behavior, technological properties and microstructure of a typical extruded ceramic Raschig ring. The technological properties of rings prepared with different amounts of alumina and zirconium silicate sintered at 1150, 1200 and 1250 oC were evaluated by measuring the shrinkage, water absorption, porosity and strength. The reliability of rings was studied by Weibull's statistical theory. The results showed that the addition of 10% alumina or 5% zirconium silicate into the ring composition improves the Weibull modulus considerably. Finally, the optimum particle size of alumina was determined to improve the mechanical characteristics. It was found to be less than 38 μm. The results obtained can be useful in industrial applications.

      • Graphene-wrapped Ag 3 PO 4 /LaCO 3 OH heterostructures for water purification under visible light

        <P>We demonstrated a unique synthesis approach of graphene (GR)-wrapped Ag3PO4/LaCO3OH (APO/LCO) heterostructures by an in-situ wet chemical method. FESEM analysis reveals the formation of rhombic dodecahedrons of APO decorated with LCO and later wrapped with GR flakes. Optical studies shows two absorption edges corresponding to the band gap energies of APO (2.41 eV) and LCO (4.1 eV). Considering the absorption edge of the heterostructures in the visible region, the photocatalytic activities of photocatalysts containing different APO/LCO mass ratios were evaluated by the degradation of MB. GR-decorated composite with 20% LCO (APO/LCO20/GR) exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for MB degradation, with a rate constant, k of 0.541 min(-1). The photocatalytic activity of APO/LCO20/GR more greatly enhanced than those of the individual constituents (APO, LCO, APO/LCO20). The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the heterostructure can be attributed to the co-catalytic effect of LCO as well as intriguing physicochemical properties of GR. To understand the enhanced photocatalytic activity of the heterostructures the photocatalytic reaction mechanism is proposed in detail. The recyclability of the APO/LCO/GR composite photocatalyst is further evaluated by reusing the catalyst in replicate photocatalytic experiments which shows consistent photocatalytic activity thereby confirms the stability and reusability of heterostructure photocatalyst.       • A Systematic Review of Data Exchange Formats in Advanced Interaction Environments

        The advent of advanced user interface devices has raised the interest of industry and academia in finding new modes of Human-Computer Interaction. Advanced interfaces employ gesture recognition, as well as motion and voice capturing to enable humans to interact naturally with interactive environments without utilizing any of the traditional devices like mice, joysticks or keyboards. Many approaches have been developed using a large variety of sensors to capture human interaction information and then provide further processing and recognition of the acquired information. However, the majority of these approaches usually focus on the actual implementation of the various stages that comprise an advanced interaction environment. Thus, the need for defining common data formats for improving integration and reutilization of these solutions are typically not addressed. On the other hand, this study aims at surveying existing research on integrating devices into interactive environments, at different interoperability levels and in data formats, identifying techniques and patterns of conveying information from the real world to the virtual world, in order to synthesize results, organize applicable documents by similarities and identify future research needs.

        Middle Meningeal Artery Arising from the Basilar Artery

        Various anomalies for the origin of the middle meningeal artery (MMA)have been described in the literature. However, origin of the MMA fromthe basilar trunk is an extremely rare variant. We report on a 54-year-oldfemale who presented with frequent headaches; magnetic resonanceimaging showed a right parietal meningioma. The abnormal origin of themiddle meningeal artery from the basilar artery was diagnosed by angiographyperformed for preoperative embolization of the tumor. We reporton the case with a review of the embryologic basis, possible explanationsfor this aberrant origin, and its clinical implications.
