      • Understanding and Responsiveness Level about Cervical Cancer and its Avoidance among Young Women of Pakistan

Khan, Ghulam Jilany,Naeem, Hafiza Sadaf,Khan, Sara,Jamshaid, Talha,Sajid, Muhammad Imran,Bashir, Irfan,Jamshaid, Muhammad Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.12

Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality amongst the gynecological cancers worldwide, especially in developing countries. There are few to no initial symptoms and signs. This study was conducted to assess the awareness level of young Pakistani women about cervical cancer and to educate them about this deadly disease. A detailed questionnaire regarding demographic data and information about cervical cancer was distributed in different cities of Punjab. A total of 873 women took part in this survey and 70.1 percent were totally unaware of this cancer. Only 8.5% of the whole surveyed population knew accurately about cancer of cervix, 7% of the surveyed respondents correctly specified the human papilloma virus as the causative agent. Only 5.2% respondents were able to identify the Pap smear test as a diagnostic measure. Out of all the surveyed population only 4.3% of individuals were found to be vaccinated against this disease and the majority was found from the medical profession. Medical professionals, students, working women, housewives and uneducated individuals took active part in this survey. This study demonstrates a low level of awareness among Pakistani women and a need for an active campaign by media and government to increase understanding as well as introducing measures for improved prevention and treatment of cervical cancer.

X-Ray Image Enhancement Using a Boundary Division Wiener Filter and Wavelet-Based Image Fusion Approach

( Sajid Ullah Khan ),( Wang Yin Chai ),( Chai Soo See ),( Amjad Khan ) 한국정보처리학회 2016 Journal of information processing systems Vol.12 No.1

To resolve the problems of Poisson/impulse noise, blurriness, and sharpness in degraded X-ray images, a novel and efficient enhancement algorithm based on X-ray image fusion using a discrete wavelet transform is proposed in this paper. The proposed algorithm consists of two basics. First, it applies the techniques of boundary division to detect Poisson and impulse noise corrupted pixels and then uses the Wiener filter approach to restore those corrupted pixels. Second, it applies the sharpening technique to the same degraded X-ray image. Thus, it has two source X-ray images, which individually preserve the enhancement effects. The details and approximations of these sources X-ray images are fused via different fusion rules in the wavelet domain. The results of the experiment show that the proposed algorithm successfully combines the merits of the Wiener filter and sharpening and achieves a significant proficiency in the enhancement of degraded X-ray images exhibiting Poisson noise, blurriness, and edge details.

Visible light-induced enhanced photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic studies of gold decorated SnO2 nanostructures

Khan, Mohammad Mansoob,Ansari, Sajid Ali,Khan, Mohammad Ehtisham,Ansari, Mohd Omaish,Min, Bong-Ki,Cho, Moo Hwan The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015 NEW JOURNAL OF CHEMISTRY Vol.39 No.4

<P>This paper reports a novel one-pot biogenic synthesis of Au–SnO2 nanocomposite using electrochemically active biofilm. The synthesis, morphology and structure of the as-synthesized Au–SnO2 nanocomposite were in-depth studied and confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was observed that the SnO2 surface was decorated homogeneously with Au nanoparticles. The photoelectrochemical behavior of the Au–SnO2 nanocomposite was examined by cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and linear sweep voltammetry in the dark and under visible light irradiation. Visible light-induced photoelectrochemical studies confirmed that the Au–SnO2 nanocomposite had enhanced activities compared to the P–SnO2 nanoparticles. The Au–SnO2 nanocomposite was also tested for the visible light-induced photocatalytic degradation of Congo red and methylene blue, and showed approximately 10 and 6-fold higher photocatalytic degradation activity, respectively, compared to P–SnO2. These results showed that the Au–SnO2 nanocomposite exhibits excellent and higher visible light-induced photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic activities than the P–SnO2 nanoparticles, and can be used for a wide range of applications.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Visible light-induced photocatalytic degradation of colored dyes using Au–SnO2 nanocomposite. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c4nj02245a'> </P>

Growth and Characterization of Doped LiF Crystals

Sajid Khan,김홍주,Gul Rooh,김성환 한국물리학회 2014 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.65 No.11

Transparent and crack-free crystals of LiF:x (x = Ca, Pb, Na, Tl) were successfully grown byusing the Czochralski method. Growth parameters such as the pulling and the rotation rates wereoptimized. The grown crystals were characterized and compared by using X-ray luminescence. Tl- and Na-doped crystals showed better luminescence intensity than crystals with other dopants. Thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves were obtained to study the crystal defects in the grownsamples. Activation energies were calculated from the TL glow curves. The temperature dependenceof the light yield in the temperature range from 10 to 300 K under alpha particle excitation was alsoinvestigated. The light yield was found to be larger at low temperatures. Na- and Tl-doped crystalsshowed 35% and 20% increases in the light yield, respectively, at low temperatures as compared toroom temperature.

Begomoviruses and Their Emerging Threats in South Korea: A Review

Khan, Mohammad Sajid,Ji, Sang-He,Chun, Se-Chul The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2012 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.28 No.2

Diseases caused by begomoviruses (family Geminiviridae, genus Begomovirus) constitute a serious constraint to tropical and sub-tropical agro-ecosystems worldwide. In recent years, they have also introduced in temperate regions of the world where they have great impact and are posing a serious threat to a variety of greenhouse crops. Begomoviral diseases can in extreme cases reduce yields to zero leading to catastrophic losses in agriculture. They are still evolving and pose a serious threat to sustainable agriculture across the world, particularly in tropics and sub-tropics. Till recently, there have been no records on the occurrence of begomoviral disease in South Korea, however, the etiology of other plant viral diseases are known since last century. The first begomovirus infected sample was collected from sweet potato plant in 2003 and since then there has been gradual increase in the begomoviral epidemics specially in tomato and sweet potato crops. So far, 48 begomovirus sequences originating from various plant species have been submitted in public sequence data base from different parts of the country. The rapid emergence of begomoviral epidemics might be with some of the factors like evolution of new variants of the viruses, appearance of efficient vectors, changing cropping systems, introduction of susceptible plant varieties, increase in global trade in agricultural products, intercontinental transportation networks, and changes in global climatic conditions. Another concern might be the emergence of a begomovirus complex and satellite DNA molecules. Thorough understanding of the pathosystems is needed for the designing of effective managements. Efforts should also be made towards the integration of the resistant genes for the development of transgenic plants specially tomato and sweet potato as they have been found to be widely infected in South Korea. There should be efficient surveillance for emergence or incursions of other begomoviruses and biotypes of whitefly. This review discusses the general characteristics of begomoviruses, transmission by their vector B. tabaci with an especial emphasis on the occurrence and distribution of begomoviruses in South Korea, and control measures that must be addressed in order to develop more sustainable management strategies.

Search for a New Li-based Scintillator for Neutron Detection

        Sajid Khan,김홍주,박환배,Bibi Ruqia,J. Y. Lee,U. Fawad,김성환,강상준 한국물리학회 2015 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.67 No.8

Li-based scintillators are promising candidates for thermal neutron detection due to the presence of 6Li nuclei in the host lattice. In this study, pure and doped lithium iodide (LiI) crystals are grown by using the two-zone vertical Bridgman technique with diameters of 1 cm and lengths of 4 cm. The crystals were doped with Na, CO3 and Tl activators with the aim to develop a scintillator having enhanced neutron detection efficiency. Among the grown crystals, LiI(Tl) showed the highest luminescence intensity under X-ray excitation. The LiI(Tl) crystal exhibited a broad emission spectrum between 300 and 700 nm peaking at 470 nm. Under -ray excitation, The LiI(Tl) crystal showed two decay-time components of 180 ns and 900 ns, respectively. The response of the LiI(Tl) crystal to spallation neutrons and the radiation damage effects were determined at the Korea Multi-purpose Accelerator Complex (KOMAC). A clear neutron capture peak was measured at 3 MeVee under spallation-neutron irradiation.

Scintillation Characterizations of Tin Doped Lithium Iodide Crystals at Room and Low Temperature

        Khan, Sajid,Kim, H. J.,Kim, Y. D.,Lee, M. H. IEEE 2016 IEEE transactions on nuclear science Vol.63 No.2

<P>The crystals of 0.02%, 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.5% Sn doped LiI are grown by the vertical Bridgman technique. The luminescence and scintillation properties of the grown crystals are investigated. X-ray excited emission spectrum of LiI (Sn) showed a broad emission band between 400-650 nm wavelength range at room temperature. Such emission is attributed to Sn2+ ion. Scintillation properties such as energy resolution, decay time profiles, and light yield are measured under 662 keV (137Cs) gamma-ray excitation at room temperature. A maximum light yield of 6000 +/- 600 ph/MeV is measured at room temperature. LiI (Sn) single crystals showed two exponential decay components under.-ray excitation. The dependence of scintillation properties on the temperature is also presented. Changes in the decay time and light yield are measured from 295 K down to 10 K. The light yield of LiI (Sn) at 50 K is found to be nine times higher than that at room temperature.</P>
