Properties of the Variation of the Infrared Emission of OH/IR Stars I. The K Band Light Curves

To study properties of the variation of the infrared emission of OH/IR stars, we collect and analyze the infrared observational data in K band for nine OH/IR stars. We use the observational data obtained for about three decades including recent data from the two micron all sky survey (2MASS) and the deep near infrared survey of the southern sky (DENIS). We use Marquardt-Levenberg algorithm to determine the pulsation period and amplitude for each star and compare them with previous results of infrared and radio investigations.

Background: Atopic dermatitis and psoriasis are the most common chronic inflammatory skin diseases. However, there are high unmet medical needs with limitations for transcutaneous drug development due to the skin barrier. Objective: We aimed to identify a novel transdermal delivery peptide and develop a transcutaneously applicable immune modulatory protein by targeting cytokine signaling in atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Methods: We generated reporter proteins conjugated with a human-originated transdermal delivery peptide, AP and analyzed intracellular delivery efficiency in mouse or human skin cells and tissues. Especially, we utilized multi-photon confocal microscopy for visualizing the localized proteins. We also generated a recombinant therapeutic protein, AP-rPTP, which is conjugated with AP and phosphatase domain of TC-PTP targeting multiple STATs. Immune modulatory function of AP-rPTP was confirmed in splenocytes upon cytokine stimulation and TcR stimulation. Finally, we confirmed in vivo efficacy of AP-rPTP in OXA-induced acute dermatitis, OVA-induced chronic dermatitis, and imiquimod-induced psoriasis models. Results: AP-conjugated reporter proteins exhibited significant intracellular transduction efficacy in keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and immune cells. In addition, transcutaneous administration of AP-dTomato showed significant localization into the dermis and epidermis in mouse skin. AP-rPTP could inhibit pSTAT1, pSTAT3, and pSTAT6 in splenocytes and also regulate T cell activation and proliferation. Transcutaneous paper-patch of AP-rPTP protein significantly ameliorated ear thickness, tissue inflammation, and cytokine expression in allergy- as well as psoriasis-like dermatitis models. Conclusion: We identified a 9 amino acid-long novel transdermal delivery peptide and suggest the feasibility of utilizing AP for transcutaneous biologic drug development such as AP-rPTP as a novel immune modulatory drug candidate for dermatitis.

The continuous use of acetolactate synthase (ALS) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitors has led to the selection of herbicide resistant barnyardgrass populations in direct-seeded rice fields of Korea. This study was conducted to identify herbicide resistant barnyardgrass biotypes and to determine the cross- and multiple-resistance of them. 25% of the population collected from Taeahn was partially resistant to ACCase inhibitors and 22% collected from Kimjae were partially resistant to ALS inhibitors. However, 8.2% of the population from both sites was resistant to ALS and ACCase inhibitors. Resistance to sulfonylurea herbicide, flazasulfuron was identified from two barnyardgrass accessions collected from both Taeahn and Kimjae. One barnyardgrass accession from both sites was resistant to ACCase inhibitor, sethoxydim. The cross-resistance to ALS inhibitors was identified at one barnyardgrass accession from Taeahn and at two accessions from Kimjae. Further, crossresistance to ACCase inhibitors was also identified at barnyardgrass accessions from Taeahn and Kimjae. Multiple-resistance to flazasulfuron and sethoxydim was determined at four barnyardgrass accessions from Taeahn and at six accessions from Kimjae. Therefore, the herbicide mixture and sequences within a growing season or the herbicide rotation with different modes of actions across growing seasons are recommended to control herbicide-resistant barnyardgrass in infested fields.
A CATALOG OF AGB STARS IN IRAS PSC

We make a new catalog of AGB stars in our Galaxy from the sources listed in the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) point source catalog (PSC) compiling the lists of previous works with verifying processes. We verify the class identification of AGB stars into oxygen-rich and carbon-rich stars using the information from recent investigations. For the large sample of AGB stars, we present infrared two-color diagrams from the observations at near infrared bands and IRAS PSC. On the two-color diagrams, we plot the tracks of theoretical radiative transfer model results with increasing dust shell optical depths. Comparing the observations with the theoretical tracks, we discuss the meaning of the infrared two-color diagrams.

The 5.8 kb pMMH1, rolling-circle replication (RCR) plasmid of the wild type soil Bacillus mesentericus was developed into a novel secretion vector system in Bacillus subtilis. The pMMHl turned out to have a replication origin and two open reading frames (ORFs) of the putative γ-GTP and type I signal peptidase (sipP). To characterize the regions necessary for plasmid stability and high copy number, five vectors (pPS, pPP, pEN, pMN, pME) were constructed by disruption or deletion of each region in pMMH1. Like pMMHl all constructed vectors were stable over 100 generations In a non-selective medium. Since pPS was the smallest (2.3 kb)of all, it was selected for the construction of a navel secretion vector, Using the $\alpha$-amylase promoter/signal sequence of B. subtilils the novel plasmid pJSN was constructed. When $\beta$-glucosidase was expressed using pJSN, we found $\beta$-glucosidase activity in the medium. This result strongly suggested that plasmid pJSN can be used for the production of bioactive peptides in B. subtilis.

A genetic analysis of the complex Bacillus subtilis transcriptional apparatus is essential to understand the function, regulation, and interaction of the transcriptase components during growth and sporulation. This approach in Escherichia coli has uncovered fundamental mechanisms regulating gene expression Cole and Nomura, 1986; Lindahl and Zengel, 1986) and an analysis of the B. subtilis transcriptase will allow comoparison of the E.coli system to another bacterium that has evolved under different selective pressures. To this end we used antibody probes to isolate the alpha, beta, and beta' core subunit genes from a .lambda.gtill expression vector library. To address the question of function ans regulation of the minor sigma factors that confer promoter specifity on the polymerase core (Losick et al., 1986), we used the same approach to isolate the gene for the 37,000 dalton sigma factor, sigma-37.
