Individual multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were exposed to the electron beam of 200 kV energy and high resolution transmission electron micrographs were recorded at several time intervals. Interestingly, the nucleation of diamond nanoparticles with in the highly disordered MWCNT matrix upon electron-irradiation is observed. This happens without any assistance of high pressures and temperatures. High pressure X-ray diffraction experiments were performed on core/shell structures which suggest that even the closed structures of carbon resist any inward pressure, thereby ruling out the possibility of a hypothetical internal pressure under the electron irradiation conditions. Our experiments suggest that the transformation of graphitic carbon into diamond in the size window of a few nanometers is possible due to the stability of the diamond and a selective dissolution effect of 200 kV electrons on graphite. A mechanism for the same is proposed.
Study on high-pressure behaviour of spherical carbon black nanoparticles with core–shell structure

We report the behaviour of carbon black (CB) nanoparticles (spherical carbon shells), subjected to external pressure, using diamond anvil cell at synchrotron facility. CB nanoparticles have been synthesized by lamp black method using olive oil as combustion precursor and ferrocene as an organometallic additive. The catalyst-assisted CB has an iron oxide (γ-Fe2O3) core and amorphous carbon shell (i.e. core–shell structure). Our present study suggests that the carbon shells are partially transparent to the applied high pressure, and result in the reduction of effective pressure that gets transferred to the iron oxide core. High-pressure Raman spectroscopy results indicate that the surrounding carbon shells get compressed with pressure and this change is reversible. However, no structural transformation was observed till the highest applied pressure (25 GPa). The Raman spectroscopy results also suggests that the carbon shells are less pressure sensitive as their pressure coefficients (dω/dP) of G-peak were calculated (3.79 cm−1/GPa) to be less than that for other carbon allotropes.
Design and development of enhanced criticality alarm system for nuclear applications

Criticality alarm systems (CASs) are mandatory in nuclear plants for prompt alarm in the event of anycriticality incident. False criticality alarms are not desirable as they create a panic environment for radiationworkers. The present article describes the design enhancement of the CAS at each stage andprovides maximum availability, preventing false criticality alarms. The failure mode and effect analysisare carried out on each element of a CAS. Based on the analysis, additional hardware circuits aredeveloped for early fault detection. Two different methods are developed, one method for channel loopfunctionality test and another method for dose alarm test using electronic transient pulse. The designenhancement made for the external systems that are integrated with a CAS includes the power supply,criticality evacuation hooter circuit, radiation data acquisition system along with selection of differentsoft alarm set points, and centralized electronic test facility. The CAS incorporating all improvements areassembled, installed, tested, and validated along with rigorous surveillance procedures in a nuclear plantfor a period of 18,000 h.

Purpose: The present study has two aims; firstly, it attempts to verify the presence of oxidative stress by estimating the reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in periodontal pockets ≥ 5 mm as compared to controls. The second aim is to evaluate the effect of lycopene as a locally delivered antioxidant gel on periodontal health and on the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a marker of oxidative injury. Methods: Thirty-one subjects participated in this study. In the pretreatment phase, the ROS levels in pockets ≥ 5 mm were measured by flow cytometry. Three sites in each subject were randomly assigned into each of the following experimental groups:sham group, only scaling and root planing (SRP) was done; placebo group, local delivery of placebo gel after SRP; and lycopene group, local delivery of lycopene gel after SRP. Clinical parameters included recording site-specific measures of GCF 8-OHdG,plaque, gingivitis, probing depth, and clinical attachment level. Results: The gel, when delivered to the sites with oxidative stress, was effective in increasing clinical attachment and in reducing gingival inflammation, probing depth, and 8-OHdG levels as compared to the placebo and sham sites. Conclusions: From this trial conducted over a period of 6 months, it was found that locally delivered lycopene seems to be effective in reducing the measures of oxidative stress and periodontal disease.

<P>CdS, SnO2 and CdS/SnO2 hybrid photocatalyst nanostructure were synthesized using a two-step (co-pre cipitation/hydrothermal) method. The as-prepared materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), surface analysis (BET), photoluminescence spectra (PL), UV-Vis diffusion reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and photocatalytic activity. The band gap energies calculated from the DRS results are 3.30, 2.15, and 2.99 eV for pristine SnO2, CdS, and the CdS/SnO2 hybrid photocatalyst, respectively. The CdS/SnO2 hybrid photocatalyst showed more efficient charge carrier separation and improved photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO). The highest degradation rate constant was achieved for the CdS/SnO2 hybrid photocatalyst (0.02434 min(-1)) compared to CdS (0.01381 min(-1)) and SnO2 (0.00878 min(-1)). The genome of a potyvirus isolate associated with chlorotic spots and vein banding symptoms on Spathiphyllum spp., in Andhra Pradesh state, India was amplified by RT-PCR using degenerate potyvirus primers, amplicons cloned, and sequence (1.6 kb) analyzed. This virus isolate shared maximum identity of 74.8% and 80.2% at coat protein (CP) gene nucleotide (906 nucleotides) and amino acid (302 amino acids) levels, respectively with Dasheen mosaic virus (DsMV)-M13 isolate reported from China. But its 3'-UTR (258 nucleotides) had maximum identity of 62.5% with DsMV-Vietnam isolate. The deduced molecular weight of CP is 33.57 kDa and it contained DAG triplet in its N-terminal region. In CP amino acid based phylogenetic analysis, this virus isolate represented a separate branch but closer to DsMV isolates cluster. Based on the molecular criteria set for the discrimination of species and genus in the Potyviridae family, the present virus isolate was identified as a distinct virus species in the genus Potyvirus and proposed the name Spathiphyllum chlorotic vein banding virus (SCVbV).
THE EVOLUTION OF A NEW ONLINE DIGITAL MARKET: A MULTISTAKEHOLDER PERSPECTIVE

In this research, we investigate the dynamics of one market cycle of Indian art through its various phases of development from early growth to peak and then through a decline. Using the entire online market data for Modern Indian art, we examine how the internal dynamics of the price formation process during auctions changed during the course of this market’s evolution. Our results show that the structure of the price formation process varies systematically over the course of the cycle and the impact of the brand (artist), the product (painting), market information (pre-auction estimates), demand (competition), and consumer (bidder) characteristics changed across the stages of market evolution. Specifically, the revenue, price per square inch, and the number of lots sold (items) from established artists closely followed the overall trend in the market. On the other hand, the number of lots and revenue from emerging artists had a minimal increase during the growth phase of the market. However, these artists maintained their value even when the market was declining. Furthermore, 80% of the lots by established artists beat the preauction estimates during the growth period, compared to only 40% for emerging artists. In contrast, during the decline stage, more lots from emerging artists (8%) beat the preauction estimates than lots from established artists (2%). We also find that bidders entered the auction much earlier during the growth phase of the market than during the maturity and decline stages. These findings have implications for multiple stakeholders in the online art auction market including, sellers, buyers, artists, and auction houses.

Background/Aims: Scissor-type endoscopic submucosal dissection (ST-ESD) knives can reduce the adverse events associated with ESDs. This study aimed to compare ST-ESD and non-scissor-type (NST)-ESD knives. Methods: We identified ten studies that compared the performance characteristics and safety profiles of ST-ESD and NST-ESD knives. Fixed- and random-effects models were used to calculate the pooled proportions. Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 test. Results: On comparing ST-ESD knives to NST-ESD knives, the weighted odds of en bloc resection was 1.61 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.90–2.90; p=0.14), R0 resection was 1.10 (95% CI, 0.71–1.71; p=0.73), delayed bleeding was 0.40 (95% CI, 0.17–0.90; p=0.03), perforation was 0.35 (95% CI, 0.18–0.70; p<0.01) and ESD self-completion by non-experts was 1.89 (95% CI, 1.20–2.95; p<0.01). There was no heterogeneity, with an I2 score of 0% (95% CI, 0%–54.40%). Conclusions: The findings of reduced odds of perforation, a trend toward reduced delayed bleeding, and an improvement in the rates of en bloc and R0 resection with ST-ESD knives compared to NST-ESD knives support the use of ST-ESD knives when non-experts perform ESDs or as an adjunct tool for challenging ESD procedures.
