Student Perceptions of the English as an Intercultural Language (EIcL) Paradigm

Randall Warren Green 현대영미어문학회 2017 현대영미어문학 Vol.35 No.3

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of English as an Intercultural Language (EIcL) (Green and Lee 2015; Lee 2012; Sifakis 2004) and to present the results of two studies that identified Korean university students’ perceptions of EIcL. The first study examined the perceptions of 60 Korean university students about the incorporation of EIcL in the EFL classroom. The second study looked at the perceptions of 25 Korean university students who took part in study abroad experiences in the Philippines, a so-called member of the outer circle (Kachru 1992). The results of these two studies indicate that there is an awareness of and interest in learning EIcL on the part of the participants. The results also have a number of valuable implications for educators and learners regarding the role of English in today’s highly interconnected, global environment.

Korean university students’ perceptions of rote memorization as a form of meaningful learning

Randall Warren Green 언어과학회 2022 언어과학연구 Vol.- No.103

The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of 20 Korean university students about the practice of rote memorization as a learning strategy in the Republic of Korea. Some educators and students have criticized rote memorization as a learning method that stifles critical and creative thinking and only promotes a type of superficial learning. However, several studies maintain that rote memorization can lead to deeper or meaningful learning. The participants in this study took part in individual interviews to identify their general perceptions about the use of rote memorization as a learning strategy in Korea and the type of learning it promotes. The results reveal that the high majority of participants view memorization as an extremely important skill in Korea but also suggest a variety of other learning strategies to promote meaningful learning. It is believed that the results of this study have significant implications for learners and educators.

Korean University Students’ Perceptions of the Korean Variety of English (KVE)

Randall Warren Green 현대영미어문학회 2021 현대영미어문학 Vol.39 No.3

The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of 30 Korean university students on the Korean Variety of English (KVE). To examine their awareness and use of KVE, all participants took part in an online classroom activity in which they re-wrote a story written in inner circle English to a story that used KVE. After the completion of this activity, the participants took part in focus group discussions in order to discuss their opinions about the use of KVE versus the use of inner circle English. The findings revealed that in the classroom activity the participants demonstrated a substantial awareness of many lexical features of KVE but only a slight awareness of syntactic features of KVE. Regarding the use of KVE, the majority of participants had overall negative perceptions but expressed the belief that using KVE was appropriate in certain circumstances. The pedagogical implications of the study are discussed.

The Use of L1 by Native-English Instructors in the EFL Classroom: Student Perceptions and Oral Proficiency

        Randall Warren Green,배대권 현대영어교육학회 2013 현대영어교육 Vol.14 No.4

During the past few decades, a number of studies have examined the use of L1 versus the use of L2 by non-native English instructors in the EFL classroom; however, there has been less discussion about the use of L1 by native-English instructors to facilitate learning in this setting. The purpose of this study is to identify the perceptions of adult English language learners at an institution of higher education in the Republic of Korea regarding the use of the Korean language (L1) in the EFL classroom by native-English instructors. In addition to measuring the students’ perceptions, the study aimed at determining whether or not the use of Korean (L1) by the instructor had an effect on students’ oral proficiency. The results of the study indicate that a majority of students were supportive of the limited use of Korean (L1) in the classroom by native-English instructors. The study also showed a higher level of improvement in English oral proficiency for students in classes where some Korean was used by the instructor. It is believed that this study has important implications for language educators, particularly regarding the role that L1 can play in promoting L2 acquisition.
