Determinants of Intra-Industry Trade between Vietnam and Countries in TPP

Intra-industry trade (IIT) has played an important role in international trade of Vietnam as a result of rapid growth of the country. This article investigates the level of IIT between Vietnam and 11 trading partners in Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) over the period 2000-2014. Although there have been a large number of empirical researches contributed to the determinants of IIT, most of them only pay attention on developed countries where the trade flows are similar due to similar demand structure and production technology. Until now, there is no study on intra-industry trade between Vietnam and countries in TPP that Vietnam recently signed a trade agreement in early 2016. IIT is measured by the Grubel-Lloyd index. The index shows that the extent of intra-industry trade between Vietnam and the trading countries is not high due to the level of economic development and the market size. The determinants of IIT are examined using a panel regression model. In the empirical analysis, the results indicate that Vietnam's intra-industry trade is positively correlated with country size, while it is negatively correlated with income dissimilarity, the trade openness, and geographical distance. This study contributes to the new theoretical trade theory on the evidence of developing country's IIT.
Distributed Cooperative Object Pose Estimation in Multi-Sensor Networks

This paper presents a cooperative estimation of the pose of an object in multiagent systems, e.g., camera networks. The individual measurement of the object pose is assumed to be Gaussian (on SE(3)). We investigate an iterative scheme for the agents to cooperatively compute the optimal pose of the object, which minimizes a maximum likelihood cost, in a distributed fashion. By linearizing the pose perturbations at the optimal pose we formulate the problem as a linear maximum likelihood (ML) estimation at each iteration. Then, by utilizing the average consensus protocol, we show that the global ML solution at each iteration can be estimated by the agents with linear convergence rate, under the assumptions that the underlying graph of the system is connected and the weight matrix is double-stochastic.

<P>We first report an innovative method, which we refer to as interfacial liquid plasma polymerization, to chemically cross-link ionic liquids (ILs). By this method, a series of all-solid state, free-standing polymer electrolytes is successfully fabricated where ILs are used as building blocks and ethylene oxide-based surfactants are employed as an assisted-cross-linking agent. The thickness of the films is controlled by the plasma exposure time or the ratio of surfactant to ILs. The chemical structure and properties of the polymer electrolyte are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Importantly, the underlying polymerization mechanism of the cross-linked IL-based polymer electrolyte is studied to show that fluoroborate or halide anions of ILs together with the aid of a small amount of surfactants having ethylene oxide groups are necessary to form cross-linked network structures of the polymer electrolyte. The ionic conductivity of the obtained polymer electrolyte is 2.28 X 10(-3) S.cm(-1), which is a relatively high value for solid polymer electrolytes synthesized at room temperature. This study can serve as a cornerstone for developing all-solid state polymer electrolytes with promising properties for next-generation electrochemical devices.</P>
On the Unfriendliness of Symmetric Graphs

Graph is an abstract representation commonly used to model networked robotic/sensor systems. In problems across various fields, including computer vision and pattern recognition, neuroscience, and formation control, graphs are often brought into comparison. Friendliness of the associated adjacency matrices, specified by their spectral properties, is important in deriving a convex relaxation of the (intractable) discrete graph matching problem. In this note, we revisit unfriendliness properties of symmetric graphs by inspecting its relation to the underlying graph structure. We show that if adjacency matrices of symmetric graphs have distinct eigenvalues then there exist eigenvectors orthogonal to the vector of all ones, making them unfriendly.

This paper proposes a fixed-time (FxT) frame (or pose) localization scheme for multi-agent systems based on the inter-agent relative poses specified by SE(3) transformation matrices. Under the localization law, the agents’ local coordinate frames are localized almost globally in fixed-time with regard to a common reference frame. Based on the FxT frame estimation, the SE(3) formation control for multi-agent systems with connected graphs can be simply cast as the stabilization in SE(3) for each individual agent. When the desired formation is specified by the desired inter-agent bearing vectors, FxT bearing-based formation control is presented with no need for the global reference frame common to the agents. Simulation results are provided to support the theoretical development.

This paper presents velocity consensus and bearing-based formation shape control of double-integrator modeled agents in an arbitrary dimension. The proposed control law is developed by combining the conventional consensus-based flocking control and bearing-based formation control. The equilibrium set is first investigated. We then show the instability of the undesired equilibrium set and locally exponential stability of the desired equilibrium set by using Lyapunov’s indirect method and center manifold theory. Finally, simulation results are given to support the proposed control strategy.

<P>This work focuses on systematic studies of dissolution engineering for Pt0.9M0.1/graphene(M = Au, Co, Cu, Fe, Mo, Ni, Pd, Ru, and Sn) counter electrodes (CEs). The developed nanohybrid materials exhibit higher catalytic activity and electrical conductivity compared with those of Pt/graphene CEs. The results also indicate the improved stability of the developed CEs in iodide electrolyte. Furthermore, the trend in the variation of the reactivity of the PtM alloys agrees well with the concept of density functional theory (one-electron description). An enhancement in the catalytic activity of the developed nanohybrids results from the electronic effect that originates from an upward shift of the platinum d-band to the Fermi energy level upon alloying. Thus, the Pt(0.9)M(0.1)graphene nanohybrids are cost-effective alternative CE materials to the expensive Pt. The obtained results provide a foundation for enhancing the catalytic activities of CEs for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The implementation of the Pt0.9M0.1/graphene nanohybrids offers significant potential for increasing the efficiency of DSCs. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The improvement of the catalytic performance for methanol and formic acid oxidation reactions remains a key issue for the development of a new generation of direct methanol and formic acid fuel cells. This study reports a simple approach, using selective chemical etching for the synthesis of unique nitrogen-doped carbon dot/Pt<SUB>84</SUB>Pd<SUB>16</SUB> (N-Cdot/Pt<SUB>84</SUB>Pd<SUB>16</SUB>) nano-network structure at room temperature with excellent electrocatalytic properties. The obtained nano-network hybrid material exhibits significant enhancement of the electrocatalytic activity for the electro-oxidation reaction of both methanol and formic acid with current densities of 999.0 and 1919.5 mA/mg<SUB>metal</SUB>, respectively, compared with the commercial ones of 751.32 and 806.02 mA/mg<SUB>metal</SUB>, respectively. This paper investigates the determinants of credit accessibility and the effect of credit on the income of farm households borrowing from Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Giong Rieng District Branch, Kien Giang Province. Based on the primary data of 200 farming households who are the customer of the bank, the study applied the Probit regression model to examine determinant factors of credit accessibility of farm households and employed the Propensity score matching method to investigate the impact of credit on households’ income. The findings of the Probit regression shown that three independent variables that significantly influence the access to credit of households are household size, income source, and farm size. Besides that, the Propensity score matching method results showed a difference of 23.799 million VND/year between the income of borrowing households and that of non-borrowing households at the significance level of 1%. The difference in the imcome from the interval and central matching methods are VND 24.700 million VND/year and VND 24.633 million VND/year, respectively. Given empirical findings suggetsted that several recommendations to increase the credit accessibility of farm households, thereby creating favorable conditions for improving their income.
