Objective: To establish the prevalence and distribution profile of esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESCCs) over a 22-yr period in North China. Methods: Using endoscopy for primary diagnosis and histological analysis for the further confirmation, a total of 74,854 ESCC patients aged 20-89 between January 1985 and December 2006 were investigated to analyze the epidemiological profile including prevalence rates, distribution of age-of-onset, gender and geographical area of ESCC in Luoyang, the highest incidence area of North China. Results: A total of 4092 cases of ESCC were finally diagnosed among 74,854 patients who had their first endoscopies. The prevalence among males was higher than that among females (p<0.01), resulting in an overall male:female OR of 1.2 (95%CI, 1.2-1.3). The prevalence in rural areas was higher than in urban areas (p<0.01), resulting in an overall rural:urban OR of 2.6 (95%CI, 2.4-2.9). The rural:urban ORs and the 95% CI increased continuously from 2.6, 2.3-3.0 to 2.7, 2.2-3.3, respectively, for 4 consecutive periods during the 22-yr study period. Moreover, the median age of onset among females was higher than that among males (p<0.01). For both sexes and in both areas, the prevalence rates declined and the median age of onset rose for 4 consecutive periods in the 22-yrs time frame (p<0.01). Conculsions: These data reveal the epidemiological profile of ESCC in the area of North China, and suggest that urban areas and rural people account for a growing proportion of the ESCC patients although the prevalence of ESCC significantly declined and the median age-of-onset postponed over the 22-yrs period. Moreover, the prevalence status of ESCC in rural areas also underlines the need for public health initiatives aimed at reducing risk factors of this fatal disease.

1-Phenyl-3-p-fluorophenyl-5-p-chlorophenyl-2-pyrazoline has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis and X-ray single crystal diffraction. Density functional calculations show that B3LYP/6-311G** method can reproduce the structural parameters. The electronic absorption spectra have been predicted based on the optimized structure by using 6-311G** and 6-311++G** basis sets and compared with the experimental values. The results indicate that TD-DFT method can only predict the electronic absorption spectra of the system studied here approximately. On the basis of vibrational analyses, the thermodynamic properties of the title compound at different temperatures have been calculated, revealing the correlations between , , and temperature.

Hierarchical layer-by-layer quadrangle CeO2 was prepared through ultrasonic-assisted solution-phase synthesis strategy using cerium oxalate as the precursor. The as-prepared mesoporous CeO2 displayed a surface area of 98.7 m2 g−1 and pore diameters of 2.0–10.0 nm. The high-resolution TEM image revealed that the layer structures of the CeO2 were made of numerous nanocrystal particles with the crystallite size of about 13–15 nm. High energy and cavitation of ultrasonic wave assists cerium oxalate precursor in building the layer-by-layer quadrangle staking. UV–vis absorption spectrum showed that the direct allowed transition bandgap energy for the as-prepared CeO2 was 2.91 eV. Moreover, the CeO2 exhibited good photocatalytic property for degrading Rhodamine B solution under UV radiation.

Based on studying of the working principle of rocker-pin chain Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), the profile of rocker pin was improved from arcs into a combination of involute and cardioid which has better transmission performance. The notion of equivalent teeth number was brought up, and then the equivalent teeth numbers of the driving and driven pulleys were calculated under different transmission ratios. The variable pitch characteristic of new rocker-pin chain was studied and the harmonious relationship between transmission ratio, pitch increment and chain link rotation angle was analyzed. Based on the force analyzing of each component of CVT, transmission efficiency of the CVT was studied and the discipline of transmission efficiency changing with the variation of friction wedge angle was analyzed. The calculation results show that the new design method not only realize the variable pitch characteristic, but also improve the transmission efficiency of new rocker-pin chain CVT effectively.

This paper studies the leader-follower consensus tracking for a group of heterogeneous multi-agent systems with nonlinear hybrid order dynamics, external disturbances and actuator faults. First, a novel finite-timeobserver is designed based on a combination of high-order sliding mode and dual layers adaptive rules to realizefast estimation and compensation of disturbances and faults. Then the fixed-time consensus protocols are achievedwith the aid of a novel sliding mode surface. Additionally, the proposed protocols solve the singularity by introducing a continuous sinusoid function. The distributed control protocols are designed for all followers with first-orderor second-order dynamics to achieve synchronization with the leader. Finally, the effectiveness of the algorithm isverified by simulation.

The use of uricase-deficient mammals to screen formulations of engineered uricases as potential drugs for hyperuricemia involves heavy costs and presents a technical bottleneck. Herein, a new practical system was investigated to evaluate the pharmacological significance of a bacterial uricase based on its ability to eliminate uric acid in plasma in vitro, its pharmacokinetics in vivo in healthy rats, and the modeled pharmacodynamics in vivo. This uricase, before and after modification with the monomethyl ether of poly(ethylene glycol)-5000, effectively eliminated uric acid in vitro in rabbit plasma, but its action was susceptible to xanthine inhibition. After intravenous injection of the modified uricase without purification, a bi-exponential model fit well to uricase activities in vivo in the plasma of healthy rats; the half-life of the modified uricase was estimated without interference from the unmodified uricase leftover in the sample and was nearly 100-fold longer than that of the unmodified uricase. Using a model of the elimination of uric acid in vivo taking into account of uricase pharmacokinetics and xanthine inhibition, modeled pharmacodynamics supported that the half-life of uricase and its susceptibility to xanthine are crucial for the pharmacological significance of uricase. Hence,this practical system is desirable for doing preliminary screening of formulations of engineered uricases as potential drugs for hyperuricemia.

Using core, well logging, geological analysis, production, and test data, this study characterizes a method of well logging for identifying lithology, oil or water layers, and thickness of oil layers of tight sandstone reservoir in the Chang 7 member of the Upper Triassic Yanchang Formation, southwestern Ordos Basin, China. This reservoir consists of two rock types: fine sandstone and siltstone. The fine sandstone has distinct oil traces and flecks, which strongly indicate the presence of oil, and this rock is therefore the superior reservoir. The siltstone exhibits essentially no oil shows and thus is an unproductive layer. A method of density and neutron curve normalization and overlay was used to identify the tight fine sandstone, tight siltstone, mudstone, and shale. The criteria for identifying the tight fine sandstone are a natural gamma value of less than 93 API (American Petroleum Institute units) and a difference between the normalized curves exceeding 0.05. A resistivity-porosity plot was used to identify oil or water layers relatively effectively. The criteria for identifying the tight oil layers are (1) a resistivity exceeding 28 Ω·m and a porosity exceeding 9.5% or (2) a resistivity between 20 and 28 Ω·m, a porosity exceeding 9.5%, and an oil saturation exceeding 65%. Based on the lithologic identification via normalization and overlay of the density and neutron curves and the criteria for distinguishing the tight oil layers, the thickness of the tight fine sandstone oil reservoir was accurately determined by overlaying the normalized difference curve on the resistivity curve.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a devastating cerebrovascular event that often is followed by permanent brain impairments. It is necessary to explore the pathogenesis of secondary pathological damages in order to find effective interventions for improving the prognosis of SAH. Blockage of brain lymphatic drainage has been shown to worsen cerebral ischemia and edema after acute SAH. However, whether or not there is persistent dysfunction of cerebral lymphatic drainage following SAH remains unclear. In this study, autologous blood was injected into the cisterna magna of mice to establish SAH model. One week after surgery, SAH mice showed decreases in fluorescent tracer drainage to the deep cervical lymph nodes (dcLNs) and influx into the brain parenchyma after injection into the cisterna magna. Moreover, SAH impaired polarization of astrocyte aquaporin-4 (AQP4) that is a functional marker of glymphatic clearance and resulted in accumulations of Tau proteins as well as CD3+ , CD4+ , and CD8+ cells in the brain. In addition, pathological changes, including microvascular spasm, activation of glial cells, neuroinflammation, and neuronal apoptosis were observed in the hippocampus of SAH mice. Present results demonstrate persistent malfunction of glymphatic and meningeal lymphatic drainage and related neuropathological damages after SAH. Targeting improvement of brain lymphatic clearance potentially serves as a new strategy for the treatment of SAH.

We investigate the polarization effect in intersubband transitions in polar and nonpolar GaN-based multiple-quantum well (MQW) structures for terahertz (THz) emissions by using systematic comparisons and design a nonpolar GaN/Al$_{0.2}$Ga$_{0.8}$N two-well-based MQW structure with an emitting photon of 7.27 THz (30.07 meV). Its lower energy separation (92.7 meV) matches the resonant phonon depopulation condition for better population inversion. It shows a lower threshold current density $J\rm_{th}$ at all temperatures (1.548 kA/cm$^2$ at 90 K) and a higher output power of up to 86.1 mW at 5.8 K and 33.6 mW at 100 K. Our results for the polar GaN MQW are very close to the experimental data in the literature. We find that the $J\rm_{th}$ of the nonpolar GaN MQW increases more slowly than that of the polar GaN MQW as temperature increases, indicating the nonpolar GaN MQW may be a worth-trying direction for improving the operation temperature. These results can provide meaningful references for the design and fabrication of nonpolar GaN-based THz MQW or quantum cascade structures.
