Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are active materials able to recover large strains over several thermo-mechanical cycles. In the actuation field, this strain recovery is principally exploited on the mini and micro scales at which SMAs exhibit their highest power density with respect to common lightweight technologies. During the repetitive actuation of a SMA element, certain events occur: strain drift at the beginning of cyclic testing, the accumulation of plastic deformation, and strain stabilisation. In this study, these events as well as the overall mechanical response of an articulated NiTi element were monitored through calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy. Fatigue and cyclic stability were tested under different loads and under different aging conditions. In addition, the surface morphology was continuously observed via scanning electron microscopy to monitor crack growth and propagation during the fatigue test. Finally, before and after the fatigue test, samples were tested through calorimetry to investigate the overall microstructural homogeneity. Results confirm the high potential of the proposed geometry for the development of NiTi non-conventional active elements in the miniature actuation field.

Occupational risks are often underestimated in midwifery. It is not commonly known that occupational risks were originally described by the Italian physician Bernardino Ramazzini (1633-1714) at the beginning of the 18th century. Our aim was to describe occupational risks in midwifery from Ramazzini to modern times. The original text by Bernardino Ramazzini was analyzed. A review of modern scientific articles on occupational risks in midwifery was conducted. Ramazzini identified two major occupational risks in midwifery: infections and awkward postures. Modern literature seems to agree with his considerations, focusing on infection, use of universal protection and personal protective equipment, and musculoskeletal problems. Modern studies also evidenced posttraumatic stress disorder that was probably postulated by Ramazzini himself. The poor number of articles in literature on midwives' occupational risks shows a lack of interest toward this issue. Prevention should therefore be emphasized in this field, so high-quality studies on occupational risks in midwifery are needed.
Towards the development of a custom talus prosthesis produced by SLM: design rules and verification

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a promising technology for the personalized medicine industry, especially in the orthopedic field. It allows the production of prostheses that can fit complex anatomical sites and mimic bone morphology, featuring an external solid shell and an inner trabecular core. The new medical device regulation has recently outlined the need for safety assessment of these particular implants: to the best of the authors' knowledge, there are no defined methodologies to assess the quality of a custom product since each device is intended for single-time use. The goal of the current work is to propose a well-structured pipeline for designing and verifying an AM custom prosthesis: the exemplified case is that for the ankle joint treatment (i.e. talus resurfacing), whose standard solutions are affected by significant failure rates. A comprehensive characterization of the unique features of AM orthopedic implants will be presented, integrating finite element analyses and experiments.
