Purpose:?The aims of this study were to assess frequency of stress induced cardiomyopathy (SCMP) and predictors for incidence of SCMP in patients who admitted to medical ICU. We also explored the predictors of in-hospital mortality in patients with SCMP.?Method:?It is a retrospective cohort study. A total of 338 patients admitted to medical ICU and underwent transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) between January 2015 and December 2015 were enrolled. Definition of SCMP was defines as follows: 1) transient hypokinesis, akinesis of the left ventricular mid segments with or without apical involvement or the regional wall motion abnormalities extend beyond a single epicardial vascular distribution; 2) absence of obstructive coronary disease; 3) new EKG abnormalities or modest elevation in cardiac troponin; 4) absence of pheochromocytoma, myocarditis. Logistic regression model was used to analysis predictors for incidence of SCMP and predictors of in-hospital mortality in SCMP respectively. Cox regression model was used to analysis the influence of SCMP to mortality.?Results:?Of the 338 patients, SCMP was observed in 42 patients (12.4%). Compared to 296 patients without SCMP, patients with SCMP had lower frequency of DM (19% vs 29.2%, p=0.01), COPD (4.8% vs 16.9%, p=0.04) and higher prevalence of using mechanical ventilator (MV, 90.5% vs 71.9%, p=0.03), and lower ejection fraction (EF, 38.0±15.6 vs 61.7±11.8, p<0.001). In multivariate analysis, lower BMI (odd ratio, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.78 to 0.99; p=0.04) and lower EF (odd ratio, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.87 to 0.92; p<0.01) were associated with development of SCMP. In a Cox regression model adjusted with several confounders (age, DM, malignancy, liver cirrhosis, shock, acute kidney injury, use of MV) SCMP showed trend to increase of 60-day mortality (p=0.052). Among 42 patients with SCMP, acute kidney injury(AKI) was the only risk factor for predicting in-hospital mortality (odd ratio, 8.19; 95% CI, 1.35 to 47.75; p=0.02).?Conclusions:?Our study showed that prevalence of SCMP was 12.4% and trend to increase of 60-day mortality of critically ill patients. In patients with SCMP, AKI was the only risk factor for predicting in-hospital mortality.

<P>Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health problem, and multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) are spreading throughout the world. However, conventional drug susceptibility test (DST) methods, which rely on the detection of the colony formation on a solid medium, require 1-2 months to the result. A rapid and accurate DST is necessary to identify patients with drug-resistant TB and treat them with appropriate drugs. Here, we used microscopic imaging of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) immobilized in an agarose matrix for a rapid DST. The agarose matrix, which was molded in a microfluidic chip, was inoculated with MTB, and TB drugs in liquid culture medium diffused throughout the agarose to reach the MTB immobilized in the agarose matrix. After the responses of MTB to drugs were tracked with an automated microscopic system, an image-processing program automatically determined the susceptibility and resistance of MTB to specific doses of TB drugs. The automatic DST system was able to assess the drug susceptibility of various drug-resistant clinical TB strains within 9 days with an accuracy comparable to that of conventional method. Our rapid DST method based on microscopic time-lapse imaging greatly reduces the time required for a DST and can be used to rapidly and accurately treat TB patients.</P>

<P>Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) systems with High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) wires have been actively developed world-wide. A 600 kJ class SMES with Bi-2223 HTS wire has been in development as a national project since 2004 and is currently approaching the final testing stage of the first of three phases. In the second phase of the project, several MJ class HTS SMES will be developed. In this paper, designs of magnets for 5 MJ class SMES with DI-BSSCO and YBCO coated conductor are presented and compared.</P>
Simultaneous modeling of mean and variance in small area estimation
Kim, Myungjin,Kim, Dal Ho The Korean Data and Information Science Society 2016 한국데이터정보과학회지 Vol.27 No.5
When the sample size in a certain domain is too small to produce adequate information, small area model with random effects is usually used. Also, if we do not consider an inherent pattern which data possess, it considerably affects inference. In this paper, we mainly focus on modeling to handle increased variation of the Current Population Survey (CPS) median income as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) mean income increases. In a hierarchical Bayesian framework, most estimations are carried out through the Gibbs sampler while the grid method is used to generate parameters from non-standard form. Numerical study indicates that the performance of proposed model is better than that of CPS method in terms of four comparison measurements.
Annealing Effects after Nitrogen Ion Casting on Monolayer and Multilayer Graphene
Kim, Ki-jeong,Yang, Sena,Park, Youngchan,Lee, Myungjin,Kim, BongSoo,Lee, Hangil American Chemical Society 2013 JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY C - Vol.117 No.5
<P>The modification of the electronic properties of a coverage-dependent graphene layer by nitrogen ions irradiation was investigated using core-level photoemission spectroscopy (CLPES). Here we describe preparation of monolayer and multilayer epitaxial graphene (EG) functionalized by nitrogen ions irradiation with 100 eV to minimize the damage of graphene layer as we annealed up to 1300 K to track the surface property changes using CLPES. As a result, on the monolayer EG, we found that pyridinic nitrogen mainly existed on the surface. On the multilayer EG, we observed the formation of graphitic nitrogen remaining as a major species confirmed using N 1s core-level spectra. Through a work function change (ΔΦ) measurement, both systems indicated p-type doping properties with 4.71 (monolayer EG) and 4.87 eV (multilayer EG) of work function values after N2 ion irradiation. Interestingly, we observed that monolayer EG maintained its p-type doping character, whereas multilayer EG changed the doping character from p-type to n-type as we annealed both systems up to 1300 K due to the discrepancy of the electron charge transfer. We will systematically demonstrate these variations of electronic properties for both monolayer and multilayer EG.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jpccck/2013/jpccck.2013.117.issue-5/jp309964m/production/images/medium/jp-2012-09964m_0006.gif'></P>
Environmental Specimen Bank and Ecosystem Assessment
Kim, Myungjin,Kim, Jiyeon,Cho, Yongjoo,Yoo, Byungho Korean Society of Environmental Impact Assessment 2009 환경영향평가 Vol.18 No.6
Environmental specimen bank (ESB) is a new tool to assess ecosystem in environmental impact assessment (EIA). ESB looks at changes in the concentration of pollutants in human and environmental specimens over long periods of time through retrospective analysis of archived samples. Korea started to design its National Environmental Specimen Bank (NESB) in 2007 and planned to launch an operational pilot project by 2010. NESB prepares five Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of shoots of Red and Korean pine, leaves of Mongolian oak, Pigeon's egg, and Common carp's muscle out of 14 planned specimens in 2009. ESB contributes to monitoring the effectiveness of EIA projects and policies by providing a time capsule through ecosystem assessment of representative species. This study reviews ecosystem assessment in EIA and the ESB establishment in Korea and probes NESB applications in ecosystem assessment.
