Recently, we reported an improved technology for the degradation of organophosphate nerve agents using whole cells of genetically engineered Escherichia coli that anchored and displayed the enzyme organophosphorus hydrolase on the cell surface. In this paper we report the immobilization of these cells on highly porous sintered glass beads and the subsequent application of the immobilized cell in a continuous-flow packed bed bioreactor for the biodetoxification of a widely used insecticide, coumaphos.
Magnetically Assembled Multisegmented Nanowires and Their Applications

<P>Here we report a cost effective and versatile way of synthesizing and assembling multi-functional (e.g., gold-polypyrrole-nickel-gold) nanowires. Multisegmented nanowires were synthesized using electrodeposition method for precise control over segment dimensions for proper expression of material functionality. The nanowires were integrated on microfabricated electrodes using magnetic dipole interactions between the ferromagnetic segment in the nanowire and the ferromagnetic electrodes. The electrical properties of multisegmented nanowires showed semiconducting behavior with the activation energy of ca. 0.27 eV for the conducting polymer segment of the nanowire. These nanowire devices showed response towards light and exposure to ammonia, demonstrating their potential use as photonic device and gas sensor, respectively.</P>

<P>Electrical and gas sensing properties of single-walled carbon nanotube networks functionalized with polyaniline (PANI–SWNTs) were systematically investigated to understand the gas sensing mechanisms and optimize sensing performance. The temperature-dependent electrical resistance and field-effect transistor (FET) transfer characteristics indicated that the electrical properties of PANI–SWNTs are dominated by the PANI coating. The FET transfer characteristics of PANI–SWNTs exposed to different NH<SUB>3</SUB> concentrations indicated that the dominant sensing mechanism is the deprotonation of PANI by NH<SUB>3</SUB>. Sensing experiments with different gas analytes revealed that PANI–SWNTs responded positively to NH<SUB>3</SUB>, and negatively to NO<SUB>2</SUB> and H<SUB>2</SUB>S with sensitivities of 5.8% per ppm<SUB>v</SUB> of NH<SUB>3</SUB>, 1.9% per ppm<SUB>v</SUB> of NO<SUB>2</SUB>, and 3.6% per ppm<SUB>v</SUB> of H<SUB>2</SUB>S. The lower detection limits were 50, 500, and 500 ppb for NH<SUB>3</SUB>, NO<SUB>2</SUB>, and H<SUB>2</SUB>S, respectively.</P>
HIV/AIDS-related lymphoma: perspective from a regional cancer center in India

BackgroundIndia has the third largest population of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA). Lymphoma is the second most common malignancy among PLHA. However, data are lacking regard-ing HIV/AIDS-related lymphoma (ARL) in India. This study evaluated the epidemiology and clinical outcomes of ARL from a regional cancer center in India.MethodsThis retrospective analysis included cases of ARL between March 2011 and September 2017. Data were obtained from patient record files for the assessment of epidemiology and clinical outcomes. Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism 6. Comparisons of subtype-specific survivals were performed using log-rank tests.ResultsOf 1,226 lymphoma cases, 80 (6.5%) were ARL. Details were available for 70 patients. The median age at diagnosis was 40.5 (9‒74) years with a male:female ratio of 2:1. AIDS-defining lymphomas (ADL) constituted 78.6% of cases, while 21.4% had non-AIDS defining lymphoma (NADL). The mean CD4 counts were 193.15±92.85 and 301.93±107.95 cells/L, respectively (t-test; P=0.0002). Extranodal involvement was present in 55.7%, B symptoms were reported in 60%, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was elevated in 64.3% of patients. The median overall survival times were 6 months for plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL), 23 months for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), and was not reached for Hodgkin’s lymphoma (log-rank test; P=0.0011). Other histo-logical subtype cases were too few to draw meaningful survival outcomes.ConclusionARL is a heterogeneous disease. Histologic subtype is a major determinant of the clinical outcome. ADL has significantly lower CD4 counts than those of NADL. There is an urgent and unmet need for uniform management guidelines for improving outcomes in this un-der-represented patient population.
