Phytoplankton forms the base of sea ecosystems. Various environmental factors and anthropogenic pollution, primarily, affect the concentration and photosynthetic activity algal cells, and the changes in the phytoplankton photosynthesis influence other elements of aquatic ecosystems. The increase in anthropogenic pollution markedly damages natural aquatic ecosystems, particularly, in the coastal zones, where an intense blooming of microalgae occurs, including the release of highly dangerous ecotoxic substances of various chemical natures (red tides). In this study, we tried to apply as a parameter for the algal blooming prediction in the ocean from fluorescence values in the taken samples around Busan coastal area. F0 value was almost constant but Fv/Fm value showed the irregular pattern. We presume that these results are due to the changes of the ocean environment and climate. To predict or give early warning the algal blooming, we need to investigate the specific area or fixed area through real-time monitoring. Especially, algal blooming prediction or warning can be achieved via continuously monitoring and interpretation of fluorescence changes.

We just carried out this study in order to obtain an appropriate information of the population of toxigenic fungi in crude drugs in seoul. Results of fungal examination on twenty-three kinds crude drugs were described in this report. In 21 crude drugs, colonies of fungi were possible to identify into 7 genera. Predominant genera of fungi in crude drugs were Aspergillus spp.(14, 46.6%), Scopulariospsis spp. (7, 23.3%), Penicillium spp., Rhizopus spp., Fusarium spp(2, 6.6%, respectively) and Phoma sp., Chaetomium sp.(1, 3.3%, respectively). Mycotoxin producing fungi like Aspergillus spp., Penicillum spp., and Fusarium spp. were 18 colonies(60%), totally.

An analytical method for the simultaneous determination of pencycuron in agricultural products was established by using GC-NPD. The method was validated through the guidelines of linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), accuracy and precision. The calibration curve of pencycuron was linear over the concentration range of 0.02-2 mg/kg with correlation coefficient of above 0.9999. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.005 and 0.02 mg/kg. Mean recoveries of pencycuron for each sample were 79.6-107.5% at the level of 0.02 mg/kg and 86.4-112.1% at the level of 0.2 mg/kg and 84.0-104.9% at the level of 1 mg/kg. Relative standard deviation (RSD) in recoveries were all less than 5%. The intra- and inter-day precision (RSD) were 1.6-3.0% and 5.3-11.5%, respectively. The result of validation indicated that this method was accurate and sensitive assay.

Monitoring of pesticide residues were conducted at three sites in the Southern Area of Seoul, Korea (Gang-nam, Gang-dong and Song-pa). We measured pesticide residues within soil samples using multi-pesticide residues analysis. Samples were collected at the three sites with 60 sampling spots. The amount of pesticide residues in the soil samples were as follows [(minimum-maximum), ㎎/㎏] endosulfan 0.002-0.999, procymidone 0.002-1.200, diazinon 0.003-0.024, metalaxyl 0.012-0.075. In soil treated with 0.445 ㎎/㎏ of endosulfan, the pesticide absorbed by chamnamul, was 0.157 ㎎/㎏ (Absorption rate: 35.3%). However, in soil treated with 0.358 ㎎/㎏ of endosulfan, the pesticide absorbed by lettuce, was 0.004 ㎎/㎏ (Absorption rate : 1.1 %).
Evaluation of QuEChERS Method for Determination of pesticide Residues Using GC/NPD and GC/ECD

The modified QuEChERS method was evaluated for rapid determination of pesticide residues in spinach by gas chromatography-nitrogen phosphorous detector (NPD) and electron capture detector (ECD). Fifty GC-amenable pesticides which were most frequently detected in monitoring were selected in the current study. Matrix-matched calibration was performed. The detector response for all pesticides was linear with determination coefficients higher than 0.995. LODs for most compounds ranged between 0.001 and 0.1 ug/g, and about 90% of the compounds had LODs of less than 0.05 ug/g. LOQs ranged from 0.001 to 0.32 ug/g, which were well below the MRLs permitted for most of pesticides. In the majority of cases, the recoveries (80-120%) and relative standard deviations (RSDs) (less than 20%) were within acceptable levels except for dichlorvos, propamocarb, chlorothalonil, dichlofluanid, cyhalothrin and fenvalerate. Also, this method which is applied to routine samples showed good results when comparing with traditional multi-residue method.
