        The Copper, Cobalt, Iron, Selenium and Zinc Status of Cattle in the Sanyati and Chinamhora Smallholder Grazing Areas of Zimbabwe

        The trace mineral status of cattle in the smallholder grazing areas of Sanyati and Chinamhora in Zimbabwe was evaluated during the rainy and dry seasons of 1994 and 1995. The evaluation was done in terms of mineral concentration in blood plasma. Plasma copper in calves, steers and cows in the dry season was; Sanyati: 0.55, 0.59, and 0.61; Chinamhora: 0.59, 0.58, and $0.60{\mu}g/ml$, respectively versus a normal of $0.65{\mu}g/ml$. In the rainy season, copper was deficient at both sites (averaging $0.56{\mu}g/ml$ and $0.59{\mu}g/ml$ at Sanyati and Chinamhora, respectively). Plasma selenium in the dry season was 0.017, 0.025, and $0.017{\mu}g/ml$ for calves, steers and cows, respectively at Sanyati versus a normal of $0.03{\mu}g/ml$ and therefore considered to be deficient. Iron, zinc and cobalt were found to be generally high and therefore unlikely to be deficient. Copper and selenium are recommended in salt licks in these environments.

      • The Property Rights of Women in Zimbabwe

        The paper looks at women’s rights of access and control of property in particular land as this is a fundamental issue that affects development. Zimbabwe has a dual legal system that allows for the operation of both general and customary law. The latter has in the past affected women negatively as patriarchal norms favour men. Gender has an impact on property ownership and inheritance rights in so many ways. Whilst the current Constitution advocates for distribution of aland on a 50/50 basis between men and women this is not the case. In addition Zimbabwe is a signatory to a number of International instruments and treaties that protect the rights of women such as the African Charter and the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples rights and CEDAW. The reality on the ground is that ownership is skewered in favour of men. Women hold 3 percent of agricultural land in the smallholder sector and 10 percent in the large-scale commercial sector although women constitute 56% of the total population; Zimbabwean society is highly unequal in terms of access to and ownership of resources. This paper will look at the property rights of women within marriage, at dissolution and to a small extent at succession and the legal and socio-cultural factors that affect these rights.

        Use of regression to study the effect of fabric parameters on the adhesion of 3D printed PLA polymer onto woven fabrics

        The use of the three-dimensional (3D) printing technique is gaining popularity due to its ability to produce products with minimum waste. 3D printing can be used to add polymers onto woven fabrics to produce novel structures. This research work concentrated on the study of the fabric properties affecting the adhesion of Polylactic Acid (PLA) polymer onto selected fabrics. Different fabrics made from cotton, polyester and acrylic, were selected and using 3D printing, PLA polymer was printed onto the fabric surface. Regression models were used to study the effect of selected fabric properties on the adhesion of PLA polymer onto the woven fabrics. The results obtained in this research work indicated that fabric areal density, warp count (Tex), weft count (Tex), fabric thickness and fabric handle indicated a positive correlation with adhesion of PLA onto woven fabrics. On the other hand, warp ends/inch and weft picks/inch showed a negative correlation with the adhesion of PLA polymer onto woven fabrics.

        An On-line Adaptive Glucose Feeding System Incorporating Patterns Recognition for Glucose Concentration Control in Glutamate Fermentations

        In glutamate fermentation, intermittent feeding is the most widely used glucose feed strategy. This feeding strategy causes severe fluctuations of glucose concentration and osmotic pressure in fermentation broth, which deteriorates the viability of the cell and reduces glutamate production in turn. In order to maintain glucose concentration at stable and constant levels, an on-line prediction and feedback control system based an empiric mass balance model was developed. However, the control system did not work properly and sometimes glucose concentration could even decline to 0 level (glucose exhaustion), as the model parameter varies in different runs. As a result, a novel model-based adaptive feedback control system incoporating with an artificial neural network (ANN) based pattern reconition unit for on-line diagnosizing the fault of glucose exhaustion was proposed and applied for glutamate fermentation. This adaptive control system could accurately detect glucose exhaustion when it occurs, and then immediately updates the control parameter based on some pre-defined rule. With the proposed control system, glucose was automatically fed, and its concentration could be maintained at desired levels constantly. As a result, glutamate concentration was 17 ~ 30% higher than that of the traditional fermentations using the intermittent glucose feed strategy.
