Highly magnetostrictive films, mainly iron-based amorphous, are atractive for used in functional electronic signal conditioning and sensor applications, because they show large magneto-mechanical coupling factors based on both soft magnetic properties and large magnetostrictions. We have devel- oped a magneticaly-controlable surface-acoustic-wave device (MSAW)by using a FeSiB amorphous film which is representative magnetostrictive material having both extremely soft magnetic properties and high electrical resistance. In this paper, we presented the soft magnetic properties of FeSiB amorphous films deposited on lithium-niobate substrates. A change in the coercive force with in- creasing film thickness for an abnormaly large magnetic anisotropic field was found in the films. A maximum phase shift of 9.2˚ was obtained in the fabricated magnetic surface-acoustic-wave device containing the FeSiB film.
Cloning of Agarase Gene from Non-Marine Agarolytic Bacterium Cellvibrio sp

Agarase genes of non-marine agarolytic bacterium Cellvibrio sp. were cloned into Escherichia coli and one of the genes obtained using HindIII was sequenced. From nucleotide and putative amino acid sequences (713 aa, molecular mass; 78,771 Da) of the gene, designated as agarase AgaA, the gene was found to have closest homology to the Saccharophagus degradans (formerly, Microbulbifer degradans) 2-40 aga86 gene, belonging to glycoside hydrolase family 86 (GH86). The putative protein appears to be a non-secreted protein because of the absence of a signal sequence. The recombinant protein was purified with anion exchange and gel filtration columns after ammonium sulfate precipitation and the molecular mass (79 kDa) determined by SDS-PAGE and subsequent enzymography agreed with the estimated value, suggesting that the enzyme is monomeric. The optimal pH and temperature for enzymatic hydrolysis of agarose were 6.5 and 42.5ºC, and the enzyme was stable under 40ºC. LC-MS and NMR analyses revealed production of a neoagarobiose and a neoagarotetraose with a small amount of a neoagarohexaose during hydrolysis of agarose, indicating that the enzyme is a β-agarase.
Magnetorefractive Effect and Cubic Nonlinear Magneto - optics in Magnetic Granular Alloys

We present a brief review of recent experimental and theoretical results on new magneto-optical phenomena in magnetic granular metal-insulator alloys with tunnel-type magnetoresistance, focusing on magnetorefractive effect and cubic nonlinear magneto-optics.

We developed a magneto-optic spatial light modulator (MOSLM), for all visible wavelengths, using amorphous rare earth-transition metal (RE-TM) film. The magneto-optical elements (pixels) were made of amorphous DyFe films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The the amorphous DyFe film was determined to have 22 atom percent Dy, and the Curie temperature (Tc) was found to be 343 K. For magnetic switching in this MOSLM, heating to the Curie temperature (Tc) by using a laser radiation density of 5 mJ/cm2 and a driving current of 1 mA at all visible wavelengths were needed. In addition, we confirmed the switching speed of pixels for various laser radiation densities.

Bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Bi:YIG, Bi0.5Y2.5Fe5O12) films were deposited with aerosol deposition method and their magnetic and optical properties were investigated as a function of annealing temperature. Since the ceramic films deposited with aerosol deposition method have not a perfect crystal structure due to non-uniform internal stress o㏄urred by mechanical collision during their deposition, the post annealing could be a key process to release its internal stress and to improve its micro structure for optimizing the magnetic and magneto-optic properties of films. The crystallinity of Bi:YIG film was improved with increase of annealing temperature, and the saturation magnetization increased up to 87 emu/㏄ at 800℃. The Faraday rotation increased up to 1.4 deg/ ㎛ by annealing at 700℃ around the wavelength of 0.5 ㎛. The optical transmittance of the Bi:YIG film was also improved in visible region.
