<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>To examine the effects of <I>Populus tomentiglandulosa</I> (PT) extract on the expressions of antioxidant enzymes and neurotrophic factors in the cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) region of the hippocampus at 5 min after inducing transient global cerebral ischemia (TGCI) in gerbils, TGCI was induced by occlusion of common carotid arteries for 5 min. Before ischemic surgery, 200 mg·kg<SUP>−1</SUP> PT extract was orally administrated once daily for 7 d. We performed neuronal nuclear antigen immunohistochemistry and Fluoro-Jade B staining. Furthermore, we determined <I>in situ</I> production of superoxide anion radical, expression levels of SOD1 and SOD2 as antioxidant enzymes and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) as neurotrophic factors. Pretreatment with 200 mg·kg<SUP>−1</SUP> PT extract prevented neuronal death (loss). Furthermore, pretreatment with 200 mg·kg<SUP>−1</SUP> PT extract significantly inhibited the production of superoxide anion radical, increased expressions of SODs and maintained expressions of BDNF and IGF-I. Such increased expressions of SODs were maintained in the neurons after IRI. In summary, pretreated PT extract can significantly increase levels of SODs and protect the neurons against TGCI, suggesting that PT can be a useful natural agent to protect against TGCI.</P>
Synteny Portal: a web-based application portal for synteny block analysis

<P>Recent advances in next-generation sequencing technologies and genome assembly algorithms have enabled the accumulation of a huge volume of genome sequences from various species. This has provided new opportunities for large-scale comparative genomics studies. Identifying and utilizing synteny blocks, which are genomic regions conserved among multiple species, is key to understanding genomic architecture and the evolutionary history of genomes. However, the construction and visualization of such synteny blocks from multiple species are very challenging, especially for biologists with a lack of computational skills. Here, we present Synteny Portal, a versatile web-based application portal for constructing, visualizing and browsing synteny blocks. With Synteny Portal, users can easily (i) construct synteny blocks among multiple species by using prebuilt alignments in the UCSC genome browser database, (ii) visualize and download syntenic relationships as high-quality images, (iii) browse synteny blocks with genetic information and (iv) download the details of synteny blocks to be used as input for downstream synteny-based analyses, all in an intuitive and easy-to-use web-based interface. We believe that Synteny Portal will serve as a highly valuable tool that will enable biologists to easily perform comparative genomics studies by compensating limitations of existing tools. <P>Discrimination and quantification of trace amounts of steroid hormones in biological specimens are needed to elucidate their changing expression because their biological functions are responsible for the development and prevention of endocrine disorders. Although mass-spectrometry-based assays are most commonly recommended, development of a new type of highly sensitive and selective detection methods in clinical practices is needed. Here, we introduce a label-free type of terahertz molecule sensor capable of sensing and identifying progesterone and 17α-OH-progesterone selectively. Nanoslot-array-based sensing chips were used as launching pads for absorption cross-section enhancement of molecules at a reliable terahertz frequency. With use of nanoslots with resonances at 1.17 THz corresponding to intrinsic THz absorption resonance mode for progesterone and at 1.51 THz for 17α-OH-progesterone, respectively, each steroid shows prominent transmittance change in terms of its amount. In particular, the sensing performance has been much improved by controlling evaporation speed, in turn resulting in an efficient, homogeneous distribution of the molecules onto a sensing hot spot.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

The physicochemical properties of deodeok (Codonopsis lanceolate) was investigated in relation to the different steaming time and cycles of steaming and drying (S/D). Additionally, the quality characteristics of Makgeolli with different amount (0-0.45%) of steaming and drying deodeok (SD) were measured comparison to non-steaming and drying deodeok (NSD). L* values of deodeok tended to decrease as the number of S/D cycles and steaming times increased, while BI showed the opposite trend for L* values. Reducing sugar increased significantly from 1 to 3 S/D cycles and decreased thereafter (p<0.05). Also, processed with steaming for 4 h and 5 S/D cycles had the highest antioxidant properties. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the S/D process notably influenced the properties of deodeok. Quality characteristics of Makgeolli showed that 0.45% SD resulted in higher antioxidant properties than control or NSD.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We investigated molecular structure change of <SMALL>D</SMALL>- and <SMALL>L</SMALL>-glucose by proton beam irradiation of 7.8 MeV, using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. Both glucose pellets exposed to the irradiation of 10<SUP>13</SUP>, 4 × 10<SUP>13</SUP>, 6 × 10<SUP>13</SUP>, and 8 × 10<SUP>13</SUP> particles/cm<SUP>2</SUP> of the particle’s fluence, were characterized using complex refractive indices in terahertz frequency region. We found that fingerprints of two types of glucose in terahertz frequency were disappeared above 8 × 10<SUP>13</SUP> particles/cm<SUP>2</SUP>. Crystallinity breaking and molecular structure change by proton irradiation was reaffirmed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The structural changes of biochemical molecules by proton beams were measured the terahertz spectroscopy. </LI> <LI> The changes of molecular structure of glucose were investigated by FTIR and XRD method. </LI> </UL> </P>
Settling and Filtering Processes for Treatment of Fine Suspended Solidsand Soluble Heavy Metals

Fine suspended solids and heavy metals generated effluence from mine drainage could destroy environment as the aesthetic landscapes, and depreciate water quality. Therefore, the purpose of this research is focused on process development applied the actual field for controlling fine suspended solids and heavy metals, and so lab-scale test was performed for inducement of basic data. The mine drainage used in this research was sampled in H. mine located Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do. Concentration of suspended soil, arsenic, iron and manganese was exceeded the standard of contaminant limitation for the clean water, and particle size of suspended solid was less than 10 μm as fine particle. Although hydraulic retention time of mine drainage for effective settling was required more than 6 hours, hydraulic retention time would be increased in winter season when the settling efficiency could be reduced because of viscosity decreasing. Moreover, installed inclination plate helped to increase settling efficiency of suspended solid about 30 %. Filtering media that was the most effective removal of suspended solids and heavy metal was indicated granular activated carbon of 1~2 mm was the optimal size.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among clinical performance, clinical practice stress, and Nunchi of nursing students. Data were collected from 42 nursing students with clinical practice experience between June 11, 2023, and July 13, 2023. The data analysis was performed using the SPSS/WIN 22.0 program, and analyzed through the Mann-Whitney U-test, Kruskall-Wallis test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. The results revealed a negative correlation between clinical performance and clinical practice stress (r = -.332, p = .032), and a positive correlation between clinical performance and situational awareness (r = .663, p < .001). Therefore, to enhance the clinical performance of nursing students, multidimensional efforts are needed to reduce clinical practice stress and improve overall satisfaction with university life and situational awareness skills. 본 연구는 간호학생의 임상수행능력, 임상실습 스트레스와 눈치를 파악하고 각 변수간의 상관관계를 확인하고자 시행되었다. 연구 대상은 임상실습 경험이 있는 간호학생 42명이며, 2023년 6월 11일부터 7월 13일까지 온라인 설문을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 자료 분석은 SPSS/WIN 22.0프로그램을 이용하였으며 Mann-whitney U-test와 Kruskall-wallis test, Pearson correlation coefficient로 분석하였다. 연구 결과 임상수행능력은 임상실습 스트레스와 음의 상관관계(r=-.332, p=.032)가 있었으며, 눈치와는 양의 상관관계(r=.663, p<.001)가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 간호학생의 임상수행능력을 높이기 위해서는 임상실습 스트레스를 낮추고 대학생활 만족도와 눈치 역량을 높이기 위한 다각도의 노력이 필요할 것이다.
