The United Kingdom’s Eurosceptic Stance: The European Union’s Most Outspoken Member State

Vol.32 No.2

The United Kingdom (UK) is always at the forefront of the debateover the direction of the European Union (EU). Despite the fact that the UK hashelped develop the European Community (EC) into the successful Union that istoday, it has gained a reputation as an ‘awkward partner’ that has one foot in andthe other foot out of Europe. This paper will look at the causes behind Britain’seurosceptic stance with the belief that the UK is merely the most outspokenmember of the EU, and is in fact no more eurosceptic than various other memberstates. Thus it is important to look at the causes as to why the UK is sooutspoken. The causes looked at in this paper include geographical location, therole of the Commonwealth, timing of entry into the EC, and loss of sovereignty.

Reunification on the Korean Peninsula: Is Social-reunification Feasible?

2018 Korea Observer Vol.49 No.2

Détente is sweeping across the Korean Peninsula for the first time in over a decade following policies of engagement by both the North and South. How long and successful this détente will be is yet to be seen, however, it has once again sparked calls for reunification. Whilst the reunification of the two Koreas has been well-discussed most literature and discussions follow the same ideas; absorption of the North into the South and discussions on the economic and political repercussions. This paper, on the other hand, analyses the social divide between the two Koreas suggesting that it is reaching a point of inelasticity, namely a point where if the divide stretches even further the two peoples will never be able to successfully reunite, regardless of how reunification occurs. As such, in the case of a German-like, “surprise reunification” the governments must prepare a social reunification policy in advance.

European Identity: How the EU has used images to foster a European identity among its citizens

Vol.- No.65

In 1952 the European Coal and Steel Community came into force, signaling the beginning of the European project. While the past 70 years has seen the European Coal and Steel Community enlarge and develop into a deeply integrated economic and political union, social integration and the emergence of a European identity has been much slower to emerge. In more recent times, in particular, the rise of nationalism and divisions in Europe have shown that Europe may not be as united as many think. This paper uses social identity theory and the concept of citizenship to understand how the EU can approach the creation of one homogenous ‘European’ group. The paper specifically focuses on the visual symbolism used by the EU, such as the EU flag, Eurozone, and passports to subtly invoke the spirit of Europe in its citizens. The symbols are analysed to show their effectiveness in forming a European identity.

The European Union’s Common Fisheries Policy and the Implications of BREXIT

2017 Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA) Vol.1 No.2

The seas and oceans have been, and remain, the most important resource for trade, communication and survival. The maritime trading routes have connected European states for thousands of years, as well as provided coastal settlements with supplies of food and resources, sustaining local industries and aiding economic growth. However, in Europe the state-centric past has been replaced with a functional, regionalist approach to managing, maintaining and ensuring sustainable future use of the seas and its stocks. This paper looks at the development of the EU’s maritime policy, the challenges it has faced, and the challenges it still faces, in particular the impact that Great Britain’s exit from the Union will have on the integrated maritime policy, and more importantly the role that the CFP could have in the BREXIT negotiations.

        The United Kingdom’s Eurosceptic Stance

Vol.32 No.2

Analysing the Feasibility of Establishing an Integrated Maritime Policy Amongst ASEAN Members

2019 Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA) Vol.3 No.2

The Asia-Pacific region is vast, with diverse cultures and political systems, yet all countries are connected by the common resource, the seas. Through limited, shallow regionalization, and globalization in general, the sea links are becoming stronger and the exploitation of the seas is rising, forcing the sovereign states to cooperate in even more fields, from transport, to natural disaster early warning systems, to security, to fisheries. Whilst these individual areas are seeing a growth in cooperation agreements, the ASEAN region has yet to follow the European Union in establishing an integrated maritime policy that brings all industries that use the seas and oceans under one umbrella. The EU’s integrated policy encompasses transport, energy, fishing, tourism, and trade with a view to forging the sustainable use of the seas. This paper looks at the main reasons why ASEAN and its plus members are unlikely to establish an integrated maritime policy, namely the various territorial disputes across the region and the unwillingness to cede sovereignty that such an integrated policy demands. As such, this paper assumes that an integrated maritime policy in Asia is required, but alas is infeasible with the ASEAN Way.

A Study on How the Lack of Bi-partisanship Has Affected South Korea’s Policy on North Korea: Implications for Future Relations

2019 Korean Social Science Journal Vol.46 No.2

The Republic of Korea (RoK) is praised for its rapid economic development, whilst simultaneously transforming its political system from an authoritarian one to a democratic one. However, compared to its economic rise, the RoK’s political transformation has been more challenging, with suppression of opposition parties, weak coalitions, and governments that, once in power, look out only for their own party’s interests. This has defined most aspects of South Korea’s political system, but the lack of bi-partisanship with regards to the unification policy with North Korea has been even more pronounced. This paper will analyze how the political evolution has shaped its system and, as such, why historical trends still play a major role in domestic politics. It will then focus on the fluctuation in unification policies throughout the various governments, and show that this pattern of shifting policy is now weakening South Korea’s own position with regards to the North, as well as the RoK’s allies.
