Biomaterial-based cell delivery strategies to promote liver regeneration

        Maqsood Ali,Samantha L. Payne 한국생체재료학회 2021 생체재료학회지 Vol.25 No.1

Chronic liver disease and cirrhosis is a widespread and untreatable condition that leads to lifelong impairment and eventual death. The scarcity of liver transplantation options requires the development of new strategies to attenuate disease progression and reestablish liver function by promoting regeneration. Biomaterials are becoming an increasingly promising option to both culture and deliver cells to support in vivo viability and long-term function. There is a wide variety of both natural and synthetic biomaterials that are becoming established as delivery vehicles with their own unique advantages and disadvantages for liver regeneration. We review the latest developments in cell transplantation strategies to promote liver regeneration, with a focus on the use of both natural and synthetic biomaterials for cell culture and delivery. We conclude that future work will need to refine the use of these biomaterials and combine them with novel strategies that recapitulate liver organization and function in order to translate this strategy to clinical use.

Parametric Studies and Performance Analysis of a Biplane Micro Air Vehicle

Maqsood, Adnan,Go, Tiauw Hiong The Korean Society for Aeronautical and Space Scie 2013 International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sc Vol.14 No.3

This paper presents the experimental investigation of a biplane micro air vehicle. The effects of geometric parameters, gap, stagger, and decalage angle are investigated at low Reynolds number (~150,000) in a low-speed wind tunnel. A rigid flat plate with an aspect ratio of one and square planform shape is used to evaluate all three geometric parameters. The side dimension of the single flat plate is 0.15 m. The goal is to find an optimal biplane configuration that should exceed monoplane performance by generating high lift and flying as slow as possible, in order to capture high-quality visual recordings. This configuration will directly help to fly at a lower velocity and to make tighter turns that are advantageous in restricted environments. The results show that the aerodynamic performance of the biplane MAV is significantly enhanced through the combination of gap and stagger effects. A performance comparison demonstrates the superiority of the optimal biplane configuration compared to a monoplane in cruise and glide phases. Moreover, no significant compromise is found for the range, endurance, and climb performance.

The target compounds 6-11a-e were synthesized by condensing 4-amino-5-aryl-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiones 5a-f with various aromatic carboxylic acids in the presence of phosphorous oxychloride. The structures of newly synthesized compounds were characterized by IR, $^1H$ NMR, $^{13}C$ NMR, elemental analysis and mass spectrometric studies. All the synthesized compounds were screened for their antibacterial activity. Almost all the tested compounds were potent against four different strains of bacteria when compared with that of reference drug ciprofloxacin. Compounds 6c, 6e, 8d, 9b, 9e, 11a and 11b showed nearly equal or lower MIC values than standard drug, against all four tested bacterial strains but rest of the compounds showed excellent antibacterial activities.

      • An Intelligent System for Filling of Missing Values in Weather Data

Maqsood Ali Solangi,Ghulam Ali Mallah,Shagufta Naz,Jamil Ahmed Chandio,Muhammad Bux Soomro International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2023 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.23 No.9

Recently Machine Learning has been considered as one of the active research areas of Computer Science. The various Artificial Intelligence techniques are used to solve the classification problems of environmental sciences, biological sciences, and medical sciences etc. Due to the heterogynous and malfunctioning weather sensors a considerable amount of noisy data with missing is generated, which is alarming situation for weather prediction stockholders. Filling of these missing values with proper method is really one of the significant problems. The data must be cleaned before applying prediction model to collect more precise & accurate results. In order to solve all above stated problems, this research proposes a novel weather forecasting system which consists upon two steps. The first step will prepare data by reducing the noise; whereas a decision model is constructed at second step using regression algorithm. The Confusion Matrix will be used to evaluation the proposed classifier.

An Adaptive Control of Smart Appliances with Peak Shaving Considering EV Penetration

        Zunaib Maqsood Haider,Farhan H. Malik,M. Kashif Rafique,Soon-Jeong Lee(이순정),Jun-Hyeok Kim(김준혁),Khawaja Khalid Mehmood,Saad Ullah Khan,Chul-Hwan Kim(김철환) 대한전기학회 2016 전기학회논문지 Vol.65 No.5

Electric utilities may face new threats with increase in electric vehicles (EVs) in the personal automobile market. The peak demand will increase which may stress the distribution network equipment. The focus of this paper is on an adaptive control of smart household appliances by using an intelligent load management system (ILMS). The main objectives are to accomplish consumer needs and prevent overloading of power grid. The stress from the network is released by limiting the peak demand of a house when it exceeds a certain point. In the proposed strategy, for each smart appliance, the customers will set its order/rank according to their own preferences and then system will control the household loads intelligently for consumer reliability. The load order can be changed at any time by the customer. The difference between the set and actual value for each load’s specific parameter will help the utility to estimate the acceptance of this intelligent load management system by the customers.

Decentralized Demand Response Architecture for Energy Management of Residential Consumers

        Zunaib Maqsood Haider,Khawaja Khalid Mehmood,Saad Ullah Khan,Muhammad Kashif Rafique,Chul-Hwan Kim 한국조명·전기설비학회 2017 조명·전기설비학회논문지 Vol.31 No.10

Due to the current alarming conditions regarding environmental pollution and growing energy crisis, electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity across the world. According to one estimation [1], there will be 20 million EV fleets on the road by 2020 and that the aggregated sale of EVs will rise to 5.9 million. Integration of large number of EVs to the distribution network will pose serious threats in terms of the reliability and stability of the power system. In order to mitigate the adverse effects on the power system, this paper proposes an approach for the management of EV charging along with smart home load management (SHLM) systems by using a water-filling (WF) algorithm. The proposed framework ensures that the instantaneous load at a distribution transformer is restrained below its rated capacity while consumer preferences are taken into account. In the case that the instantaneous demand increases beyond the transformer capacity, the proposed framework allocates a demand restraining limit (DRL) to each home associated with the transformer. The allocation of the DRL is dynamic and based on the consideration of the convenience factor, demand profile and characteristics of the flexible appliances of all the consumers. The performance of the proposed plan is verified by considering a network consisting of a distribution transformer and five homes.

Nonlinear Disturbance Observer Based Sliding Mode Control of Quadrotor Helicopter

Hamid Maqsood,Yaohong Qu 대한전기학회 2020 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.15 No.3

This paper develops tracking control of quadrotor unmanned air vehicle in the presence of parametric uncertainties and mismatched exogenous disturbances. First, a traditional sliding mode control (SMC) law is synthesized for a nominal model without parametric uncertainties and disturbances to achieve nominal control performance. Then to compensate the system uncertainties existing in the actual system, gain-scheduling based SMC law is synthesized. However, the gained scheduled SMC does not provide better control performance in the presence of unknown exogenous disturbances existing in actual system. To end this, a novel nonlinear disturbance observer is integrated with gain scheduled SMC to counteract the exogenous disturbances and attain the performance of reference nominal model. The proposed nonlinear disturbance observer SMC method exhibits the following two salient characteristics: frst, the design gains should be greater than the bound of disturbance estimation error rather than that of disturbances, second; in the absence of uncertainties the nominal control performance of sliding mode control strategy is retained. The stability analysis of the proposed control strategy is validated using Lyapunov theorem. Finally, numerical simulation results are exhibited to illustrate the efcacy of the proposed control strategy.

Statistical Modeling of Thermal Properties of Biobased Compostable Gloves Developed from Sustainable Polymer

Muhammad Maqsood,Gunnar Seide 한국섬유공학회 2018 Fibers and polymers Vol.19 No.5

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biodegradable and compostable polymer obtained from annually renewable resources and is acknowledged to be sustainable and non-polluting polymer with substantial commercial prospective as a textile fiber however, there is lack of literature on apparel applications of this polymer. Therefore in this study it was aimed to develop biobased compostable gloves from PLA draw textured melt spun yarns and to examine the effect of yarn linear density, fabric structure and stitch density on thermo-physiological comfort and moisture management properties of PLA based gloves. 100 % PLA based multifilament yarns of two different linear densities were melt spun and later draw textured on false twist texturing machine to be used for gloves knitting. Single jersey and rib structures were produced with two different stitch densities to investigate their effect on thermal conductivity, thermal resistance, relative water vapour permeability, air permeability and moisture management properties of the gloves. Minitab statistical software was employed to analyze the results of test samples. The coefficients of determinations (R2 values) presented good estimation capability of the established regression models. The outcomes of this research may be useful in determining suitable manufacturing requirements of PLA based gloves to accomplish precise thermo-physiological and moisture management properties.
