      • Load Frequency Control of Power Systems with Sugeno Fuzzy Gain Scheduling PID Controller

        This paper proposes a new Fuzzy Gain Scheduled Proportional, Integral and Derivative (FGPID) controller by using Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy system to the load frequency control problem in multi-area power systems. The TS fuzzy inference engine is chosen and the range of the controller is selected suitably to enhance the output performance of the system. Simulation results demonstrate the ability of the proposed control model in damping the frequency oscillations and tie line power deviations due to area load changes. The approach is compared against two controllers in the literature; Fuzzy Gain Scheduling Integral and Derivative (FGID) controller, and Fuzzy Gain Scheduling Proportional and Integral (FGPI) controller. Settling times, overshoots, undershoots and Integral Square Error (ISE) of frequency deviation are used as comparison criteria. Nonlinear simulation results show that the proposed controller provides better performance than the other two models.

        Intravesical Sodium Chondroitin Sulphate to Treat Overactive Bladder: Preliminary Result

        Purpose: This study aimed to verify the efficacy and safety of intravesical treatment with sodium chondroitin sulfate (CS) in patients with overactive bladder (OAB) who are refractory to previous antimuscarinic treatment. Methods: This study was performed between June 2012 and January 2015 and included 31 consecutive women (mean age, 42.10±7.34 years) with OAB who had been previously treated with two types of antimuscarinic drugs. The results of gynecologic and cystoscopic examinations were normal, and OAB comorbidity was absent. Treatment with intravesical instillations containing 40 mL CS (0.2%; 2 mg/mL) was administered for 6 weeks; after weekly treatments, monthly treatments were administered. The OAB-validated 8 (OAB-V8) symptom scores, nocturia, frequency, urgency, urge incontinence, and urinary volumes measured by uroflowmetry were evaluated for all the patients. The values obtained before the treatment were statistically compared with those obtained six months after the treatment. Results: The duration of the symptoms was 18.36±6.19 months. A statistically significant improvement of the patients’ conditions was observed in terms of the OAB-V8 symptom scores, nocturia, frequency, urgency, urge incontinence, and urinary volumes measured by uroflowmetry after the treatment. Conclusions: Despite the limitations of this study, the outcomes confirmed that CS therapy is safe and effective for the treatment of OAB.

      • Emotional User Experience in Web-Based Geographic Information System: An Indonesian UX Analysis

        In the discipline of design science, the integration of cognitive, semantic, and affective elements is crucial in the conception and development of a product. Affective components in IT artefacts have attracted researchers' attention, but little attention has been given to Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This research was conducted to identify emotions in web-based GIS, and determine design influences on the emotions using Kansei engineering (KE). In the evaluation procedure, ten web-based GIS were used as specimens, and 20 Kansei words were used as emotional descriptors in the Kansei checklist. 50 participants were asked to rate their emotional responses towards the specimens on the Kansei checklist. Principal Component Analysis was used to discover the semantic structure of Kansei, in which dynamism and spaciousness were identified. Significant Kansei concepts were identified using Factor Analysis, in which dynamic & well-organized, refreshing, spacious, professional, and nautical-look were identified. Partial Least Square analysis has assisted the research in discovering the significant design influence to the Kansei. These findings provide designers and other stakeholders with valuable knowledge for strategizing future web-based GIS designs that incorporate user emotions.

        The Effect of Garlic Derivatives (S-Allylmercaptocysteine, Diallyl Disulfide, and S-Allylcysteine) on Gentamicin Induced Ototoxicity: An Experimental Study

        Objectives. Gentamicin is a potent aminoglycoside antibiotic. Ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity are the main side effects which restrict the use of gentamicin. Garlic with its intrinsic antioxidant activity may prove beneficial in prevention from ototoxicity. S-allylmercaptocysteine (SAMC), diallyl disulfide (DD), and S-allylcysteine (SAC) are three active compounds found in garlic. In this study, we investigated the effect of SAMC, DD, and SAC on the ototoxicity induced by gentamicin in rats, by using brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA). Methods. Thirty male Wistar rats with intact Preyer’s reflex initially weighing 220–260 g were randomly assigned to either the gentamicin injection with SAMC treatment group (Genta-w SAMC), DD treatment group (Genta-w DD), SAC treatment group (Genta-w SAC), gentamicin injection without any active compounds (AC) treatment groups (Genta-w/o AC), or control group (n=6 rats each group). Gentamicin was given 120-mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneally once daily for 25 days to subjects in all groups except the control group. SAMC 100-mg/kg, and DD 50-mg/kg body weight were given intragastrically, and SAC 250-mg/kg body weight was given intraperitoneally once daily to subjects in Genta-w SAMC, and Genta-w DD, and Genta-w SAC groups, respectively during the study. After 25 days hearing thresholds were evaluated by using BERA test. Results. The mean amplitude of auditory thresholds (sensation level [SL]) measured by using BERA for the Genta-w SAMC, Genta-w DD, Genta-w SAC, Genta-w/o AC, and control groups were 22±8, 25±5, 30±9, 54±11, and 10±7 dB SL, respectively (mean±SD). The differences between every active compound group (Genta-w SAMC, Genta-w DD, and Genta-w SAC) and Genta-w/o AC were statistically significant (P<0.016). Conclusion. SAMC, DD, and SAC are derivative of garlic seems to attenuate aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss. The effect of SAMC and DD seems to be more prominent than that of SAC.

      • Optimum amount of CFRP for strengthening shear deficient reinforced concrete beams

        The behavior of shear deficient under-balanced reinforced concrete beams with rectangular cross-sections, which were externally strengthened with CFRP composite along shear spans, was experimentally investigated under vertical load. One of the specimens represents a reference beam without CFRP strengthening and the other specimens have different width/strip spacing ratios (wf/sf). The optimum strip in terms of wf/sf, which will bring the beam behavior to the ideal level in terms of strength and ductility, was determined according to the regulations. When the wf/sf ratio exceeds 0.55, the behavior of the beam shifted from shear failure to bending failure. However, it has been observed that the wf/sf ratio should be increased up to 0.82 in order for the beam to reach sufficient shear reserve value according to the codes. It is also observed that the direction and weight of the CFRP composite are one of the most critical factors and 240 gr/m2 CFRP strips experienced sudden ruptures in the shear span after the cracking of the concrete. It is considered as a deficiency that the empirical shear capacity formulas given for the beams reinforced with CFRP in the regulations do not take into account both direction and weight of CFRP composites.

        Orthosiphon stamineus as a potential antidiabetic drug in maternal hyperglycemia in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

        Background: Maternal hyperglycemia is associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes for both mother and offspring. Insulin is the standard treatment of hyperglycemia with the aim to reduce risks of complications, however, due to several restrictions, the search for more effective drugs from traditional medicinal plants continues. Methods: The antidiabetic effects of Orthosiphon stamineus (O.stamineus) in non-pregnant and pregnant streptozotocin-induced Sprague Dawley rats were identified. The effect of different concentrations of O. stamineouson insulin level using isolated pancreatic islets in response to low and high concentrations of glucose was identified. Oral glucose tolerance test was performed in both pregnant and non-pregnant rats prior to and after treatment with O. stamineus (0.1 g/100 g of body weight). O. stamineus was given orally daily for 2 weeks in non-pregnant and 10 days in pregnant rats. Results: Oral glucose tolerance test indicated that treatment with O. stamineus in non-pregnant and pregnant rats significantly reduced blood glucose level and stimulated glucose-induced insulin secretion. No mortality was recorded throughout the study and no signs of toxicity during the experimental period including in both mother and foetus. For plasma analysis, the interactions of peptides such as GLP-1 and ghrelin level might contribute to the glucose lowering effect by O. stamineus via stimulation of insulin. The incubation of islets showed that O. stamineussignificantly stimulated insulin release in response to high glucose. Conclusion: O. stamineus could be a potential source of a specific oral hypoglycaemic agent to treat glucose intolerance in pregnancy.

        Deeper Integration or Open Regionalism in the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA): A CGE Approach

        The Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) is a regional association based on the principle of open regionalism to promote liberalization through trade and investment facilitation. This study compares two main scenarios with the ingredients of a deeper regional integration compared to the IORA's present open regionalism status. Scenario I evaluates the effects of gradual tariff cuts on IORA, while Scenario II combines the impact of tariff cuts, non-tariff measures (NTM) reduction, and trade facilitation. A recent recursive dynamic model, called Global Trade Analysis Project recursive dynamic model (GTAP-RD), was used to understand the adjustment path. The result shows welfare gain for a ll IORA countries when a t rade liberalization involving tariff cuts is complemented with NTM reduction and trade facilitation. In addition, the “NTM spillover” effect on some non-IORA members (the rest of Gulf Cooperation Council, the rest of Greater Arab Free Trade Agreement, and the United Kingdom) was observed. The results suggest that IORA has more to gain if it involves a deeper regional integration than the present form of open regionalism.

        An Efficient Artificial Intelligence Hybrid Approach for Energy Management in Intelligent Buildings

        Many artificial intelligence (AI) techniques have been embedded into various engineering technologies to assist them in achieving different goals. The integration of modern technologies with energy consumption management system and occupant’s comfort inside buildings results in the introduction of intelligent building concept. The major aim of this integration is to manage the energy consumption effectively and keeping the occupant satisfied with the internal environment of the building. The last few couple of years have seen many applications of AI techniques for optimizing the energy consumption with maximizing the user comfort in smart buildings but still there is much room for improvement in this area. In this paper, a hybrid of two AI algorithms called firefly algorithm (FA) and genetic algorithm (GA) has been used for user comfort maximization with minimum energy consumption inside smart building. A complete user friendly system with data from various sensors, user, processes, power control system and different actuators is developed in this work for reducing power consumption and increase the user comfort. The inputs of optimization algorithms are illumination, temperature and air quality sensors’ data and the user set parameters whereas the outputs of the optimization algorithms are optimized parameters. These optimized parameters are the inputs of different fuzzy controllers which change the status of different actuators according to user satisfaction.

        Clinical and Radiological Results of Microsurgical Posterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion and Decompression without Posterior Instrumentation for Lateral Recess Stenosis

        Study Design: A single-center, retrospective patient review of clinical and radiological outcomes of microsurgical posterior lumbar interbody fusion and decompression, without posterior instrumentation, for the treatment of lateral recess stenosis. Purpose: This study documented the clinical and radiological results of microsurgical posterior lumbar interbody fusion and decompression of the lateral recess using interbody cages without posterior instrumentation for the treatment of lateral recess stenosis. Overview of Literature: Although microsurgery has some advantages, various complications have been reported following microsurgical decompression, including cage migration, pseudoarthrosis, neurologic deficits, and persistent pain. Methods: A total of 34 patients (13 men, 21 women), with a mean age of 56.65±9.1 years (range, 40–77 years) confirmed spinal stability, and preoperative radiological findings of lateral recess stenosis, were included in the study. Interbody polyetheretherketone cages and auto grafts were used in all patients. Posterior instrumentation was not used because of limited resection of the posterior lumbar structures. Preoperative and postoperative radiographs, computed tomography scans, and magnetic resonance imaging were assessed and compared to images taken at the final follow-up. Functional recovery was also evaluated according to the Macnab criteria at the final follow-up. Results: The average follow-up time was 35.05±8.65 months (range, 24–46 months). The clinical results, operative time, intraoperative blood loss, and duration of hospital stay were similar to previously published results; the fusion rate (85.2%) was decreased and the migration rate (5.8%) was increased, compared with prior reports. Conclusions: Although microsurgery has some advantages, migration and pseudoarthrosis remain challenges to achieving adequate lumbar interbody fusion.
