Removal of biobutanol from acetone-butanolethanol (ABE) fermentation broth can be achieved by fixed-bed sorption by means of KA-I resin, and the relevant breakthrough curves would provide much valuable information to help design a continuous fixed-bed sorption process in field application. In the present study, the effects of several important design parameters, i.e., initial butanol concentration (Cf: 3.0 ~ 30.0 g/L), inlet flow rate (Qf: 0.5~ 5.5 mL/min) and adsorbent bed height (Z: 4.2 ~ 18.0 cm),on the adsorption breakthrough curves of KA-I resin in a fixed-bed column were investigated. It was found that the amount of adsorbed butanol at breakthrough point was increased with an increase in the value of Cf and Z; and with decrease in the value of Qf. However, the maximum sorption capacities of butanol at saturated point were basically unchanged. Three well-established fixed-bed adsorption models, namely Thomas, Yoon-Nelson and Adams-Bohart,were applied to predict the breakthrough curves and to determine the characteristic parameters of fixed-bed column, which are the basis for the process design at a real scale. Good agreement between the theoretical breakthrough curves and the experimental result were observed using Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models.

In order to obtain a robust, durable and efficient heterogeneous catalyst, macroscopic monolithic Zndopeda-Fe2O3/graphene aerogel (GA) hybrid architecture with integrated morphology and hierarchicallyporous structure were controllably synthesized via a facile in-situ hydrothermal method and then used aspersulfate (PS) activator for sulfamonomethoxine (SMM) wastewater purification. Several key reactionparameters including the initial SMM concentration, reaction temperature, coexisting inorganic anionsand SMM in real natural water samples had different influence on the SMM removal efficiency. The catalyticefficiency of Zn-doped a-Fe2O3/GA with the molar ratio of Fe/Zn = 2:1.5 was about 66%, 62%, 66%and 11%33% higher than that of GA, a-Fe2O3/GA, Zn/GA and other Fe/Zn molar ratio. The improvedactivity of Fe/Zn = 2:1.5 benefits from the synergistic effects of the sp2 hybridized carbon and porousframework, as well as the surface oxygenic functional groups, which accelerate the pollutant/oxidant dispersionand electron transfer. Electron paramagnetic resonance results indicate that OH, 1O2 and SO4radicals account for the catalytic degradation of SMM and the activation of PS in present system is differentfrom conventional homogeneous systems, and speculate mechanism was proposed based on theobtained data.

The incidence of drought stress in plants has been increasing due to global warming, and the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) induces the formation of physical barriers in plants, such as callose accumulation. The brown planthopper (BPH; Nilaparvata lugens Stål) occurs throughout Asia and feeds on rice, but the effects of drought stress on BPH feeding remain unclear. In this study, we observed changes in callose formation and ABA content in rice during drought stress. ABA content and the relative expression of ABA synthesis genes OsNCED3 and OsNCED5 were higher in drought-stressed rice than the non-stressed control. Similarly, the expression levels of callose synthesis genes and callose deposition were significantly higher in drought-stressed rice as compared to non-stressed plants, and this impacted BPH feeding. Our results indicated that rice resistance to BPH increased during drought stress due to the accumulation of callose and increasing ABA levels. Our findings provide a basis for understanding BPH feeding performance on rice during drought stress and offer novel insights relative to control during periods of water shortage.
