The establishment of an efficient protocol for plant regeneration and micropropagation from leaf explant cultures of Chicory, Cichorium intybus L. var. sativus. is reported. Callus formation rate appeared 100% from explant in all growth regulators, but calli formed in the prensence of naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) were appeared very compact and non-embryogenic state. The regenerated shoots were obtained from leaf explant cultures on solid MS medium containing different concentrations of cytokinins and auxin. The highest number of shoots (5.7) per explant and shoot growth (2.8cm) was obtained on MS medium containing 0.1 mg BAP L^-1 and 0.1 mg NAA L^-1. Indole acetic acid was the most suitable auxin for root formation among three auxins tested. 2,4-D had no effect on shoot and root formation.

This paper presents the analysis of the analysis of thrust characteristics of linear induction motors(LIMs) according to secondary reaction plate. LIMs are well known as high speed transport systems, which can obtain thrust directly without gears and links, or auxiliary mechanisms. A simple structure, easy maintenance, and less environmental pollution are advantages of LIMs. In transport systems using LIMs, the secondary reaction plate is an important design factor, because it has considerable impact on the cost of the railway as well as the performance of the LIMs. This paper deals analyzed the characteristics of linear induction motor used for moving the vehicle of container scanner. Thrust, efficiency and load characteristic were interpreted with FEM regarding two models whose material of secondary reaction plate was copper and aluminum. It suggested the interpretation of thrust, efficiency and power factor characteristic along slip and compared the operation ability of linear induction motor through characteristics analysis along the load.

<P>Photodetachment of aryl moieties from covalently functionalized SWNTs was studied by temperature-dependent and UV Raman spectroscopic tools. The sidewall functionalized SWNTs were prepared <I>via</I> diazonium reactions from 4-bromoaniline and isoamyl nitrite. <I>I</I>–<I>V</I> conductivity measurements were performed for the functionalized SWNTs, after purification from pristine SWNTs using their different solubility. Temperature dependent Raman data appeared to be in line with thermal gravimetric (TGA) data exhibiting removal of aryl moieties above 590 °C. Raman spectra of the functionalized SWNTs were examined using ultraviolet excitation at 244 nm (5.08 eV) and 325 nm (4.82 eV) as well as visible irradiation at 633 nm (1.96 eV). Our experimental results indicated that the disorder-induced D mode should change significantly, whereas the tangential G modes do not become different under UV irradiation. The D mode for the functionalized SWNTs was found weakly at ∼1410 cm<SUP>−1</SUP> at a low power of UV irradiation, whereas it was observed strongly at ∼1310 cm<SUP>−1</SUP> upon 633 nm irradiation. <P>Winter surface air temperature in East Asia is negatively correlated with a wave pattern over the Eurasian continent, called the Eurasian pattern (EU). While previous studies have reported a correlation between the EU and East Asian winter temperature on a monthly mean time scale, this study focuses on the daily scale. To this end, a new definition of the EU index (EUw) was suggested, and daily lag composite maps were constructed with respect to positive and negative peaks of the daily EUw values. Three days after the peak, an apparent temperature fall/rise appears, accompanied by strong wind advection over East Asia. An analysis of the probabilities of cold and warm weather events also shows strong dependence on the EU phase. Copyright © 2008 Royal Meteorological Society</P>

<P>Andersen cardiodysrhythmic periodic paralysis or Andersen-Tawil syndrome includes the distinct clinical features of periodic paralysis, cardiac arrhythmia, and facial and skeletal dysmorphisms and exhibits autosomal dominant inheritance. Mutations in the KCNJ2 gene, which encodes the human inward rectifier potassium channel Kir2.1, have been identified in the majority of cases. Despite well-established clinical and molecular characteristics, treatment is still case oriented, and timely diagnosis could be delayed because of the low incidence and phenotypic heterogeneity of this disease. This article describes the clinical and molecular features of 3 cases of Andersen-Tawil syndrome in 2 families. One of the mutations (G144D) was located in the pore selectivity filter residue (which is mutated recurrently) and was considered novel. Intermittent muscle weakness in childhood warrants careful evaluation of cardiac dysrhythmia and skeletal anomalies.</P>

<P>A bendable and splitter-integrated optical subassembly (OSA) is suggested as a short-distance board-to-board optical interconnection. This OSA was fabricated by simply packaging a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser on a flexible optical board having an embedded 1 × 8 optical splitter waveguide. Finally, we measured various optical characteristics of the OSA, including insertion, twist, and bending losses.</P>
