Effects of <i>Bambusa tulda</i> on the proliferation of human stem cells

<P>To date, the effects of <I>Bambusa tulda</I> on stem cells have not been thoroughly assessed. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of <I>Bambusa tulda</I> extract on the morphology and proliferative potential of human mesenchymal stem cells derived from the gingiva. The stem cells were cultured in a growth medium in the presence of <I>Bambusa tulda</I> methanolic extract (BBT) at concentrations ranging from 0.001 to 1%. Evaluation of cell morphology and cellular proliferation as well as immunofluorescent assays for collagen I were performed on days 1, 3, 5 and 7. Stem cells in the control group displayed a fibroblast-like morphology, and BBT treatment did not produce any noticeable morphological changes. However, application of 1% BBT produced a significant increase in cell proliferation. BBT, particularly at the concentration of 1%, also caused a noticeable increase of collagen I expression at day 1 and day 3. Based on these findings, it was concluded that BBT exerted beneficial effects on the proliferation of mesenchymal stem cells and enhanced collagen I expression at early time points.</P>

Background: Excessive citrate load during therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) can cause metabolic alkalosis with compensatory hypercarbia and electrolyte disturbances. If TPE is required immediately before ABO-incompatible (ABOi) liver transplant (LT) surgery, metabolic derangement and severe electrolyte disturbance could worsen during LT anesthesia.Case: We report two ABOi LT cases who received TPE on the day of surgery because isoagglutinin titers did not be dropped below 1:8. One case had a surprisingly high metabolic alkalosis with a pH of 7.73 immediately after tracheal intubation because of hyperventilation during mask bagging. The other experienced sudden ventricular tachycardia and blood pressure drop after surgical incision accompanied with severe hypokalemia of 1.8 mmol/L despite supplementation with potassium.Conclusions: Special attention should be paid to patients who just completed TPE the operative day morning as they are vulnerable to severe acid-base disturbances and life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias in ABOi LT.
Effect of Reynolds Numbers on Counter-rotating Swirling Flow in a Model Gas Turbine Combustor

The characteristics of swirling flow in a model gas turbine combustor, which is one of the most important phenomenon for efficiency and flame stabilization in gas turbines, were studied in the paper. The gas turbine combustor was modeled as rectangular shape to examine the swirling flow generated by swirler for the experiment. The model combustor consists of counter-rotating axial swirler to generate the swirling flow. A PIV system was used to measure velocity components of the swirling flow. Additionally, the mean and turbulent components were discussed which were calculated by averaging the acquired many seeding particle images. The pure water was used as a working fluid. The characteristics of swirling flow, including the formation of a central recirculation zone, corner vortex, and the wall flow along the model combustor wall, were mainly discussed and investigated with Reynolds numbers.
IT Investment and Economic Growth : A Causality Analysis over Multiple Countries

Many studies based on the production function approach have reported the positive impact of IT capital on economic performance. Yet, the reverse impact has often been reported in the information systems literature. To examine if these results at the country level are conflicting or complementing with each other, we use the Granger causality test that allows the analysis of bidirectional causality with country-level data from 1992 to 2007. The results in general reveal that economic performance causes IT investment. By partitioning the sample period by 2000 (the dot-com bubble burst), we find unidirectional causality from economic performance to IT investment in pre-2000 while we find unidirectional causality from IT investment to economic performance in post-2000. The implication for managers is that it is possible to forecast IT investment by the analysis of past economic growth in all countries. Since 2000 networked IT by Internet could cause country-level economic performance in most countries.

<P><B>Objectives</B></P><P>We aimed to develop a common health information exchange (HIE) platform that can provide integrated services for implementing the HIE infrastructure in addition to guidelines for participating in an HIE network in South Korea.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>By exploiting the Health Level 7 (HL7) Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) and Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Cross-enterprise Document Sharing-b (XDS.b) profile, we defined the architectural model, exchanging data items and their standardization, messaging standards, and privacy and security guidelines, for a secure, nationwide, interoperable HIE. We then developed a service-oriented common HIE platform to minimize the effort and difficulty of fulfilling the standard requirements for participating in the HIE network. The common platform supports open application program interfaces (APIs) for implementing a document registry, a document repository, a document consumer, and a master patient index. It could also be used for testing environments for the implementation of standard requirements.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>As the initial phase of implementing a nationwide HIE network in South Korea, we built a regional network for workers' compensation (WC) hospitals and their collaborating clinics to share referral and care record summaries to ensure the continuity of care for industrially injured workers, using the common HIE platform and verifying the feasibility of our technologies.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>We expect to expand the HIE network on a national scale with rapid support for implementing HL7 and IHE standards in South Korea.</P>

<P>In this article, the imposition of an external electric field is proposed as an effective means to improve the hydrogen storage properties of a promising medium. To demonstrate the feasibility of this concept, the geometric stability and hydrogen capacity of Li functionalized N-doped graphene were investigated in the presence of an electric field using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For Li decorated pristine and graphitic structures, the binding energy of the Li atom on the surface sheets exceeded the cohesive energy of the Li metal bulk under a positive electric field. From these results, Li adatom dispersion with atomic accuracy is expected for these two unstable structures. Furthermore, the hydrogen adsorption behavior of the pyridinic and pyrrolic structures was changed by the applied electric field in the range of 0.14–0.27 eV.
