Like many industrialized countries, the Republic of Korea (ROK) has implemented policy and research aimed at reducing the number of casualties caused by traffic accidents. For example, ROK launched the project titled “Reduce traffic casualties by half in 10 years” in 2008, Sweden introduced the Vision Zero Policy in the late 1990s, and other European Union members have launched similar projects aimed at reducing traffic accident fatalities by between 30 to 50 percent. To reduce the number of casualties from road accidents requires improvements to vehicles, road and traffic managements systems. To expedite this process Intelligent Transport System has been adapted and implemented to the vehicles and road systems. Vehicles with advanced safety features will be expected to reduce or prevent accidents which drivers cannot not respond to or perceive. To date, there has been insignificant research into the effective performance of vehicles with advanced safety features. The lack of assessment procedures has impeded the public acceptance of vehicles with advanced safety features. The Development of Assessment Technologies for Advanced Safety Vehicles has been introduced for the promotion of advanced safety vehicles. The project involves the development of assessment technologies for advanced safety vehicles. This paper shows the development of assessment methods for passive and active safety technologies.

This paper shows the influence of the side body inclination of vehicles on the roof strength of it. The steep inclination of side body of vehicle can be used to increase the roof strength. We find whether the high roof strength obtained by the steep inclination is useful to the dynamic roof strength in rollover or not. The ADAMS model was developed in this study to evaluate the static and the dynamic roof strength. The strength to weight ratio (SWR) is obtained in static roof strength test by applying loading plate according to FMVSS 216 protocol. The displacement of the top end of A-pillar and B-pillar is obtained in dynamic rollover test. The dynamic test is performed by adopting the Controlled Rollover Impact System (CRIS). The roof intrusion is the main cause for injuries suffered by seat belted contained occupants. This result has consensus based on overwhelming evidence from real world crash statistics. The results are that the side body inclination of vehicles improves the roof strength, but roof displacement is not decreased.

The frequency of rollover accidents are 2,525 cases of 226,787 cases that are whole car accidents in 2010. Rollover accidents posses 1.1% of accidents case and fatality is 16.8% for rollover accidents. That means that rollover accidents are very severe case than any other accidents types. There are two kind of test to evaluate the rollover crashworthiness. One is static test, the other is dynamic test. Former one includes KMVSS 92(Roof crush resistance), FMVSS 216, FMVSS 216a etc. Dynamic test includes KMVSS 102, CRIS etc. In this paper, we analyzed the test results for roof crush resistance and CRIS using multi-body dynamic simulation.

In Korea, The cases of vehicle accident is 226,787 and fatalities was 5,505 in 2010. The collision types can classified by vehicle to vehicle, vehicle to people, single vehicle accident. Single vehicle accidents include single vehicle rollover, pole impact, etc. Single vehicle rollovers made up for around 1.1 percent of rollovers in Korea. 19.8 percent of occupants killed in rollovers were involved in single vehicle rollovers. This means that rollover accidents do not occur frequently but fatality in vehicle rollovers is very high. This paper sets out the status of vehicle rollover accidents and why dynamic rollover tests are needed. And also this presents the methods of evaluating various dynamic rollover test and advantage and disadvantage.

국내 운행중인 자동차 충돌특성 및 변형양상에 관한 실험적 연구

The purpose of this study is to conduct various crash tests of cars in domestic service and measure the deformation and body decelerations of vehicles. A relationship between impact speed and cars damage data such as deformation, body decelerations and etc are analyzed. The characteristics of crash tests of car in domestic service are obtained and will be used for developing a precise accident reconstruction program recorded such as Automatic Accident Recording System(AARS). In this study, the test results of the full frontal impact and side impact are reviewed. The results show that the decelerations of cars in domestic service are decreased on the increment of the vehicle weight. But duration of decelerations is increased on the increment of the vehicle weight.

This paper presents safety assessment scenarios for cyclist autonomous emergency braking(AEB) system. To assess the safety performance of AEB in real traffic situation with limited number of scenarios, scenario should reflect the characteristics of real traffic collision cases. For this, statistic data of real traffic car-to-cyclist collision in Korea are analyzed. Many types of accidents are listed and categorized based on the movement of vehicle and cycle just before the collision. Then, the characteristics, main issues and limitations of each scenarios are discussed. Not only the test scenario itself but also the cost and time for the test are very important issues for the test scenarios to actually repeat the test for various systems. Also, the performance of AEB can be effected by the algorithm of AEB and the technical limitation of the sensors and hardwares. Therefore, required number of tests, possibility of dummy destruction and other technical issues are discussed for each scenarios. Based on these information, typical scenarios are selected. Also, using this information, vehicle speed range, cyclist speed and collision point are established. Proposed scenarios are verified and modified based on the vehicle test results. vehicle test was evaluated 5 times for each scenarios. Based on this results, final test scenarios are modified and proposed.

This paper present a performance evaluation scenarios to assess the safety performance of autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system for cyclist collision. To guarantee the safety performance of AEB for cyclist, AEB system should be tested in various scenarios which can be occurred in real driving condition. For this, real-traffic car-to-cyclist collision data are analyzed to classify the real traffic collision scenarios. Using this information, typical car-to-cyclist collision scenarios are selected. Also, in order to develop the detail features of these collision scenarios, several accident cases related with these scenarios are explained. Based on these information, test scenarios which can describe the car-to-cyclist collisions occurred in Korea are proposed. For practicality and feasibility of the test scenarios, proposed scenarios should be designed to assess the safety performance of AEB system effectively. For this, some test scenarios are combined or removed based on the consideration about the effectiveness of each scenario to the assessment of the performance of AEB system. To confirm that the proposed test scenarios are realistic and physically meaningful, simulation is conducted using simple AEB system in proposed test scenarios.

In order to reduce the damage of life and property caused by an automobile accident, we should design new car models and safety standard with reference to the data analysis and in-depth investigation of the accident. In-depth research and analysis of the current world other than the police investigation team (GIDAS, iGLAD, NHTSA, etc.) and collect in-depth data. Going to develop a safety policy to make it much safer cars based on this data. However, the country still does not have the advantage of KIDAS data Safety Policy Direction. In KNCAP tests, there is nothing in order to protect far side passengers even if far side impact causes approximately 50% injured people. Based on DBs like KIDAS (Korean In-Depth Accident Study) and GIDAS, far side passengers got injured as much as near side passengers did. So as to protect far side passengers, KNCAP has to change the test method of side crashes. In this study, injury severities to compare with ES-2, World SID and Thor dummies and the movements of far and near side passengers, SLED TEST was used.
