Transmission of Shared Tendencies in Contemporary Japanese Architecture

Over the past two decades after the collapse of the bubble economy, Japanese architecture emerged onto the international stage as one of the most influential in contemporary architecture. However, its emergence to a position of such acclaim is intriguing in that unlike the past generations of architects in the modern era, the leading Japanese architects practicing today do not share a strong paradigm nor operate as a cohesive group. Nonetheless, there exists lineage of relationships and cross-pollination of ideas which have developed into shared architectural tendencies. The similar architectural sensibility is particularly evident in the younger generation of architects who have established their practice in the years following the collapse of the bubble economy. These generations of practitioners show tendencies to strive for diagrammatic quality, flimsy and light minimalism, and two-dimensional spatiality in their work. Distinctive qualities which are increasingly being identified with the leading architects practicing in Japan currently. The critical examination of the selected works produced by the architects reveals certain paradoxical ideas appears to be at work. First, utilizing what is a fundamentally explanatory device, diagram, as a performative device and the end goal. Second, striving for minimalistic aesthetics of utmost simplicity which require complex and extraordinary levels of work. Third, striving for two-dimensional spatiality in what is a three-dimensional discipline in its core. While such seemingly arbitrary and stylistic inclinations have attracted some criticism, such inclinations appear to have been shaped by the cultural sensibility, societal change, and needs of an era.

The effects of glycosylation of African yam bean (AYB) protein on its nutritional and physico-functional properties were investigated and compared with those of acylated species. Both glycosylated and acylated AYB protein had reduced amino acid content, but retained their nutritional viability. The UV-visible absorption spectra of modified AYB proteins showed that glycosylation did not affect the exposure of its aromatic residue to the hydrophilic environment, but the reverse was the case with acylation. Glycosylation reduced AYB protein thermal stability compared to acylation. Glycosylation of AYB protein enhanced its solubility and emulsifying activity index significantly (p<0.05) more than acylation in various aqueous ionic media but the reverse was the case with their foaming attribute in both ionic and pH media. Both modifications maintained the good gelling attribute of AYB protein. These physico-functional attributes on acylated or glycosylated AYB protein could serve as useful guide into their plausible application in food products development.

Background: Comparing the WHO Report on Noncommunicable Diseases Country Profi les 2011 and 2014, Indonesia proportional percentage of mortality due cardiovascular death has increase from 30% to 37%. yet, the pre-existing underlying burden of chronic infections is still a major obstacle in these countries. Chronic latent infection of cytomegalovirus has been proposed as one of the major burden. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine increase expression of ICAM-1in human endothelial cells as a mean to cause accelerated atherosclerosis. Methods: Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) were isolated from umbilical cords obtained within 24 to 48 hours of delivery. Endothelial cell purity was assessed by immunohistochemical staining for von Willebrand Factor (factor VIII). The presence of contaminating leukocytes was excluded by staining the cultures with mouse monoclonal antibodies to leukocyte common antigen (LCA) (Dako), monocyte-specifi c antigen (Leu-M5). HUVECs were infected with HCMV strain VHL/E. Viral stocks were taken from a -800C freezer and thawed quickly under lukewarm running tap water. Confl uent monolayers of cultured HUVECs co-culture with viral inoculum. After 85- 90% infectivity has been achieved, the infected endothelial cells are ready to be used for identifi ying the expression of ICAM-1 using monoclonal antibody by Daco, then analyzed with Flow cytometer as well as immunohisto-chemistry analisis. Results: There is increase expression of ICAM-1 in CMV infected endothelial cells as compared to non-infected endothelial cells. Conclusions: Cytomegalovirus might use this approach to accelerate the advancement of atherosclerosis.
