Web Application for Sentiment Analysis Using Supervised Machine Learning
Bryan Nii Lartey Laryea,Chi-Hwan Choi,In-Sun Jung,Kyung-Hee Lee,Wan-Sup Cho 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Software Engineering and Vol.9 No.1
Sentiment analysis is now in focus of companies to extract information from customers’ reviews. Usually the analysis classification is positive, negative and neutral. In this research we focus on the reviews for electronic products. The demographic and technical expertise level of consumers and reviewers are diverse hence there is difference in the way they review a product. Some review contains technical solutions, improvised ways of tackling problems, frustrations, joy etc. This differences in review calls for a wider classification scheme to contain these differences. We thereby introduced a five classification scheme namely positive, negative, advice, no sentiment and neutral at the sentence. We crawled data from amazon.com and used open source natural language processing tools to get the sentiment out of the review.
THE CYCLICALITY OF REMITTANCES IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
EMMANUEL K.K. LARTEY 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2016 Journal of Economic Development Vol.41 No.1
This paper investigates the cyclicality of remittances to make inferences about whether they are sent for altruistic or self-interest reasons. The results show that remittances are procyclical, and therefore, do not support the general altruistic motive for sending remittances to sub-Saharan Africa. The results also do not lend credence to the portfolio choice hypothesis. Thus, the findings suggest that remittances to the sub-region may be driven by some other self-interest motives or family arrangements. These results, however, do not diminish the fact that remittances remain an important source of external finance to the sub-region, as evidenced in the literature.
Remittances and manufacturing sector growth in sub-Saharan Africa
EMMANUEL K.K. LARTEY,Nigatu Getachew 한국국제경제학회 2021 International Economic Journal Vol.35 No.1
This paper analyzes the link between remittances and the growth of manufacturing value-added (MVA) and explores whether the quality of institutions and exchange rate policy matter for the dynamics of the relationship in sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries. The findings suggest that when the level of financial development is accounted for, remittances have a positive impact on MVA. The standalone effect of remittances on MVA is, however, negative. The results also suggest that there is a positive influence of exchange rate flexibility on the dynamics between remittances and MVA. Furthermore, improvement in the business environment seems to matter for the performance of the manufacturing sector, but it is not significant to the dynamics between remittances and MVA. The development of the financial sector, on that account, emerges as an important factor influencing the impact of remittances on the growth of the manufacturing sector in SSA countries.
Influence of care practices on nutritional status of Ghanaian children
Christina Antwiwaa Nti,Anna Lartey 한국영양학회 2008 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.2 No.2
A community-based longitudinal study was conducted in the Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region of Ghana with the objective of assessing how caregiving practices influence nutritional status of young children in Ghana. The study subjects were one hundred mothers with infants between the ages of 6 and 12 months. Each child was visited at home monthly for a period of six months. On each visit, information was collected on caregiver household and personal hygiene, child’s immunization status, child’s dietary diversity, caregiver responsiveness during feeding, caregiver hygienic practices related to feeding and child’s weight and length. At the end of the study, summary scores were generated for each variable and quality of care practice determined based on their distribution. Classification of child nutritional status was based on z-scores for both weight-for-age and length-for-age. The results revealed that caregivers who exhibited better quality of care practice had well-nourished children. Such caregivers were more likely to practice good household and personal hygiene than those of poorly nourished children (97.1% vs 31.8%, p<0.001). They were also more likely to complete their children’s immunization schedules (88.2% vs 62.2%, p<0.001), provide good quality diets from highly diversified sources (79% vs 23%, p<0.001), exhibit high responsiveness during feeding (100% vs 22.7%, p<0.001) and feed under hygienic conditions (100% vs 22.7%, p<0.001). Based on the findings it was concluded that good caregiving practices are associated with improved child nutritional status.
Governance Perspectives of Human Security in Africa
( Kwesi Aning ),( Ernest Ansah Lartey ) 서울대학교 통일평화연구원 2019 Asian Journal of Peacebuilding Vol.7 No.2
Human security should not be considered as a mere academic rhetoric―it is, in fact, a political tool aimed at transforming individuals from conditions of exploitation and domination to that of political participation and accountability. This paper adopts political governance perspectives to analyze human security in Africa. It argues that without accountable democratic governance, the expressed objectives of human security would be difficult to achieve in Africa. By this focus, the paper adopts a broader view of human security, satisfying both the governance and development prerequisites of the concept, which has underpinned [in] security in Africa. The overall estimation of human security in Africa is that only a marginal improvement has been made in the region, especially over the last decade.
