      • Are Customers Willing to Pay for Corporate Social Responsibility? A Study of Individual-Specific Mediators

( Kum Fai Yuen ),( Van Vinh Thai ) 한국품질경영학회 2015 한국품질경영학회 학술대회 Vol.2015 No.2

Purpose - This study identifies, specifies, and examines the variables that mediate the link between firms □ involvement in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and customers □ willingness to pay premium prices for CSR (WTP for CSR). Methodology - Theoretical and alternative models were first proposed from reviewing the literature. Subsequently, a survey was administered to 212 users of shipping logistics services in Singapore. Based on the obtained data, the proposed models were analysed and compared using structural equation modelling. Findings - The link between CSR and WTP for CSR was found to be indirect and mediated by personal factors including customer satisfaction, CSR belief, and customer loyalty. It was also found that practising CSR in conjunction with service quality result in greater customer satisfaction, which subsequently elicits positive behavioural intentions and responses. Implications - In general, CSR can be employed as a strategy to satisfy customers□ psychosocial needs. However, customer satisfaction is a necessary but insufficient condition for customers to be willing to pay for CSR. Instead, CSR beliefs and customer loyalty, which are to a small extent influenced by customer satisfaction, are the true determinants of WTP for CSR. Originality -This is one of the few papers that focus on examining the mediating processes between CSR and WTP for CSR. A robust method using model comparison was adopted to rigorously test the hypotheses of this study.

Barriers to the Implementation of Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility in Shipping

Kum Fai YUEN,Jun Ming LIM 한국해운물류학회 2016 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.32 No.1

Strategic corporate social responsibility (CSR) involves the voluntary practice of social and environment activities to satisfy firms’ stakeholders, with the intention of generating profits. Companies, especially those within the shipping industry, often face challenges when implementing strategic CSR. The paper therefore, seeks to identify, rank, and discuss the barriers to the implementation of strategic CSR in shipping. A list of barriers was first identified from reviewing the literature. Subsequently, a survey was administered to 600 shipping companies in Singapore and the collected data were analysed using structural equation modelling. The results showed that factors relating to lack of resources, lack of strategic vision, lack of measurement system, high regulatory standards, and low willingness to pay for CSR are significant barriers to implementing strategic CSR in shipping. The findings imply that the practice of strategic CSR is contingent on both the firm’s macro-environment and micro-environment, albeit to a lesser extent. Understanding these potential barriers can help companies avoid or overcome these barriers and improve their chances of successfully implementing strategic CSR.

Assessing the National Logistics System of Vietnam

Ruth BANOMYONG,Vinh V. THAI,Kum Fai YUEN 한국해운물류학회 2015 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.31 No.1

The purpose of this research is to present and analyse the current situation regarding the capability of the national logistics system in Vietnam. A national assessment framework for macro-logistics is utilised in combination with semi-structured interviews of key Vietnamese stakeholders to reflect on the current situation in the country. There are still numerous shortcomings in the Vietnamese logistics system. These shortcomings are not purely infrastructure based but also from a regulatory and commercial perspective. The presented national logistics system assessment framework can be replicated in other countries or regions when assessing national logistics capability. The findings can help foreign investors, international logistics providers wanting to provide their services in Vietnam to understand the logistics context within the country. These findings are also helpful for policy makers in Vietnam on how to improve their national logistics system. This study proposes a template to assess national logistics systems and provides an in-depth understanding of logistics in Vietnam, a country that has not been much studied in the literature.

Relationship Between Dry Ports and Regional Economy: Evidence from Yangtze River Economic Belt*

Yan Feng LIU,Chong Bae LEE,Guan Qiu QI,Kum Fai YUEN,Miao SU 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.5

With the evolution of containerization and globalization of supply chains, aspects of port functions have made the transition from the sea to the inland region that forms the dry port. To explore the relationship between dry ports and regional economic development, this study uses a gravity model and forecast model to analyze 1,040 observations in 104 cities (22 dry port cities) along the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) from 2008 to 2017. The model includes economic variables, logistics variables, foreign relations variables, and human capital variables. It was found that the dry port is positively correlated with trade volume. Compared with a city without a dry port, the trade volume of a city with a dry port will increase 0.099 times. It can be concluded that a dry port is crucial for the economic development of the YREB. It was also found that per capita GDP as an economic variable, road area and rail number as logistics variables, and foreign relation variables are positively correlated with trade volume, while the human capital variable has no significant effect on trade volume. In addition, governmental policy implications are addressed from the aspects of dry port and industry cluster caused by foreign investment.
