Effect of sodium selenite on the bacteria growth, selenium accumulation, and selenium biotransformation in Pediococcus acidilactici

Masoud Kousha,Sakineh Yeganeh,Abdolsamad Keramat Amirkolaie 한국식품과학회 2017 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.26 No.4

In this study, the effect of low selenium concentrations on bacteria growth, selenium bioaccumulation, and selenium speciation in Pediococcus acidilactici was investigated. Six different sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) solutions with concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mg/L were added in MRS broth for 24 h. Then, the obtained bacterial pellets were weighed. The contents of total selenium and selenium species in the bacterial pellets were measured via optimized enzymatic hydrolysis and HPLCICP- MS. The maximum dried P. acidilactici biomass of 1.44 g/L was achieved by utilizing 1 mg/L Na2SeO3. By increasing sodium selenite concentrations, total selenium contents were significantly increased from 0.14 to 1.45 mg/ g dry weight (p\0.05). The findings indicated that selenium was favorably incorporated into the bacteria protein fraction and mainly formed selenocysteine. Therefore, selenium-enriched lactic acid bacterium P. acidilactici can deliver a less-toxic, more bioavailable selenium source for human and animal nutrition.

Comparison of postoperative paresthesia after sagittal split osteotomy among different fixation methods: a one year follow-up study

        Reza Tabrizi,Kousha Bakrani,Farshid Bastami 대한구강악안면외과학회 2019 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.45 No.4

Objectives: Postoperative paresthesia is a common complication after sagittal split osteotomy (SSO). This study aimed to compare paresthesia among different fixation methods one year postoperative. Materials and Methods: This prospective cohort study assessed subjects in four groups: class II with miniplate fixation (Group 1), class II with three-screw fixation (Group 2), class III with miniplate fixation (Group 3), and class III with three-screw fixation (Group 4). Paresthesia was evaluated one year postoperative based on a 0-10 visual analogue scale. Pearson correlation was used to evaluate associations of age and mandibular movement with paresthesia. ANOVA was used to compare paresthesia among groups. Results: A total of 80 subjects were enrolled, with 20 subjects in each of the four groups. The Pearson correlation test demonstrated a significant correlation between mandibular movement and paresthesia (P=0.001). Comparison of paresthesia among the groups showed significant differences among groups 1 and 2, 2 and 3, and 3 and 4 (P<0.05). Conclusion: The three-screw fixation method led to more paresthesia one year postoperative compared with miniplate fixation. In addition, the magnitude of mandibular movement had a positive correlation with paresthesia.

Effects of Iron Supplementation on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children Treated with Methylphenidate

        Sepehr Tohidi,Elham Bidabadi,Mohammad-Javad Khosousi,Melika Amoukhteh,Maryam Kousha,Parham Mashouf,Tamkin Shahraki 대한정신약물학회 2021 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.19 No.4

Objective: To evaluate the effect of iron on the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, treated with methylphenidate. Methods: This double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial was performed on 50 children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder under the treatment of methylphenidate, with ferritin levels below 30 ng/ml and absence of anemia. They were randomly assigned into two groups of ferrous sulfate and placebo, for 12 weeks. Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS) was used to assess the outcome in the first, sixth, and twelfth weeks. Results: Almost all CPRS subscales improved in the ferrous sulfate group from the baseline to the endpoint, although only the changes in conduct subscale scores were significant (p = 0.003). There was no significant difference in score changes between two groups in intergroup comparison. Also, the score of learning problems (p = 0.007) in the first six weeks, and conduct (p = 0.023) and psychosomatic (p = 0.018) subscales in the second six weeks were improved in the ferrous sulfate group compared with the placebo group. Conclusion: Our study showed promising effects of iron supplementation in the improvement of subscales of the CPRS.

      • Breast Cancer Trend in Iran from 2000 to 2009 and Prediction till 2020 using a Trend Analysis Method

        Zahmatkesh, Bibihajar,Keramat, Afsaneh,Alavi, Nasrinossadat,Khosravi, Ahmad,Kousha, Ahmad,Motlagh, Ali Ghanbari,Darman, Mahboobeh,Partovipour, Elham,Chaman, Reza Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.3

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide with a rising incidence rate in most countries. Considering the increase in life expectancy and change in lifestyle of Iranian women, this study investigated the age-adjusted trend of breast cancer incidence during 2000-2009 and predicted its incidence to 2020. Materials and Methods: The 1997 and 2006 census results were used for the projection of female population by age through the cohort-component method over the studied years. Data from the Iranian cancer registration system were used to calculate the annual incidence rate of breast cancer. The age-adjusted incidence rate was then calculated using the WHO standard population distribution. The five-year-age-specific incidence rates were also obtained for each year and future incidence was determined using the trend analysis method. Annual percentage change (APC) was calculated through the joinpoint regression method. Results: The bias adjusted incidence rate of breast cancer increased from 16.7 per 100,000 women in 2000 to 33.6 per 100,000 women in 2009. The incidence of breast cancer had a growing trend in almost all age groups above 30 years over the studied years. In this period, the age groups of 45-65 years had the highest incidence. Investigation into the joinpoint curve showed that the curve had a steep slope with an APC of 23.4% before the first joinpoint, but became milder after this. From 2005 to 2009, the APC was calculated as 2.7%, through which the incidence of breast cancer in 2020 was predicted as 63.0 per 100,000 women. Conclusions: The age-adjusted incidence rate of breast cancer continues to increas in Iranian women. It is predicted that this trend will continue until 2020. Therefore, it seems necessary to prioritize the prevention, control and care for breast cancer in Iran.
