Photo-crosslinking of polyethylene by mono- and diacetophenone derivatives and their precursors

The efficiency of photochemical crosslinking of low-density polyethylene (PE) films by molecules containing one or two acetophenone groups and their precursors have been correlated with the relative rates of carbonyl group depletion under equivalent irradiation conditions. The acetophenone derivatives are found to be equally or more efficient than benzophenone as crosslinkers of PE. Because some additives are not thermodynamically equilibrated in the PE matrices and crystallize on standing at $30^{\circ}C$, doped films were irradiated usually as soon as possible after their preparation. However, others were aged to determine the influence of equilibration on the efficiency of crosslinking. Thus, the effect of crystallization of some of the crosslinker additives in the PE matrices and the competition between photochemical addition of the carbonyl groups to C-H or C=C bonds of the polymer were investigated. GC-MS and FTIR analyses of photoproducts from irradiation of alkanophenones bearing a $\gamma$-hydrogen atom in PE films showed that (intramolecular) Norrish Type II splitting and Yang cyclization processes proceed efficiently, and are more rapid than subsequent intermolecular hydrogen abstraction reactions by the acetophenone photoproducts.
Comparative Characterization of Four Calcium-Binding EF Hand Proteins from Opisthorchis viverrini

Four isoforms of calcium binding proteins containing 2 EF hand motifs and a dynein light chain-like domain in the human liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, namely OvCaBP1, 2, 3, and 4, were characterized. They had molecular weights of 22.7, 21.6, 23.7, and 22.5 kDa, respectively and showed 37.2-42.1% sequence identity to CaBP22.8 of O. viverrini. All were detected in 2- and 4-week-old immature and mature parasites. Additionally, OvCaBP4 was found in newly excysted juveniles. Polyclonal antibodies against each isoform were generated to detect the native proteins in parasite extracts by Western blot analysis. All OvCaBPs were detected in soluble and insoluble crude worm extracts and in the excretory-secretory product, at approximate sizes of 21-23 kDa. The ion-binding properties of the proteins were analyzed by mobility shift assays with the divalent cations Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>, Mg<SUP>2+</SUP>, Zn2<SUP>+</SUP>, and Cu<SUP>2+</SUP>. All OvCaBPs showed mobility shifts with Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> and Zn<SUP>2+</SUP>. OvCaBP1 showed also positive results with Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> and Cu<SUP>2+</SUP>. As tegumental proteins, OvCaBP1, 2, and 3 are interesting drug targets for the treatment of opisthorchiasis.
A NEW ANALYTICAL MODEL AND SENSORLESS APPROACH FOR SWITCHED RELUCTANCE MOTORS

In this paper a new analytical model for the non-linear flux-linkage/ current characteristics of the switched reluctance motors at different rotor positions is proposed. The model has been successfully verified by the simulation and the experimental results of the instantaneous current waveforms and the average torque values in both single pulse and multiple pulse operation of the motor The uniqueness of the model lies in its defining a simple algorithm for determining the rotor position ($). Hence, sen-sorless operation of the motor can be easily implemented with the aid of this model.<br/>

Tegumental and excretory-secretory proteins are reported as diagnostic antigens for human opisthorchiasis. Rhophilin associated tail protein1-like (OvROPN1L) protein of Opisthorchis viverrini sperm tail showed potential as a diagnostic antigen. The OvROPN1L recombinant fragments were assayed for diagnostic antigenicity for human opisthorchiasis using indirect ELISA. The strongest antigenic region was a N-terminus peptide of M1 - P56. One synthetic peptide (P1, L3-Q13) of this region showed the highest antigenicity to opisthorchiasis. Sera from other parasitic infections including Strongyloides stercoralis, hookworm, Taenia spp, minute intestinal flukes, Paragonimus spp showed lower reactivity to P1. Peptide P1 is located in the disordered N-terminus of ROPN1L supporting its suitability as linear epitope. In the Platyhelminthes the N-terminal sequence of ROPN1L is diverging with taxonomic distance further suggesting that peptide P1 has potential as diagnostic tool in the genus Opisthorchis/Clonorchis. It should be further evaluated in combination with peptides derived from other O. viverrini antigens to increase its diagnostic power.

Carbon nanotubes were modified with 8-hydroxyquinoline and used for the removal of Cu(II), Pb(II),Cd(II), and Zn(II) from aqueous solutions. Different instrumentation parameters and methods ofdevelopment for determining metal ions from aqueous solutions using differential pulse anodicstripping voltammetry were studied. The adsorption of heavy metals from aqueous solution by thepristine and modified MWCNTs was studied kinetically using different kinetic models, and the resultsshowed that the adsorption process best fitted the pseudo-second-order model and the Elovich model. The mechanism of adsorption was explored using the intra-particle diffusion model and the liquid-filmmodel.

<P>An eight-member series of CF<SUB>3</SUB>-substituted difluorophosphorus corroles was prepared for establishing a structure-activity profile of these high-potential photosensitizers. It consisted of preparing all four possible isomers of the monosubstituted corrole and complexes with 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-CF<SUB>3</SUB> groups on the macrocycle’s periphery. The synthetic pathway to these CF<SUB>3</SUB>-substituted derivatives, beginning with (<B>tpfc</B>)<B>PF</B><SUB><B>2</B></SUB>, involves two different initial routes: (i) direct electrophilic CF<SUB>3</SUB> incorporation using FSO<SUB>2</SUB>CF<SUB>2</SUB>CO<SUB>2</SUB>Me and copper iodide, or (ii) bromination to achieve the 2,3,8,17,18-pentabrominated compound using excess bromine in methanol. Crystallographic investigations revealed that distortion of the original planar macrocycle is evident even in the monosubstituted case and that it becomes truly severe for the penta-CF<SUB>3</SUB>-substituted derivative <B>5</B>. There is a shift in redox potentials of about 193 mV per -CF<SUB>3</SUB> group, which decreases to only 120 mV for the fifth one in <B>5</B>. Differences in the electronic spectra suggest that the Gouterman four orbital model decreases in relevance upon gradual -CF<SUB>3</SUB> substitution, a conclusion that was corroborated by DFT calculations. The very significant energy lowering of the frontier orbitals suggested that photoexcitation should lead to a highly oxidizing photocatalyst. This hypothesis was proven true by finding that the most synthetically accessible CF<SUB>3</SUB>-substituted derivative is an excellent catalyst for the photoinduced conversion of bromide to bromine (phenol, toluene, and benzene assay).</P><P>CF<SUB>3</SUB>-substituted difluorophosphorus corroles were synthesized and studied by CV, NMR spectroscopy, crystallography, and DFT. All four possible isomers of the monosubstituted corrole and complexes with 2-, 3-, 4-, and 5-CF<SUB>3</SUB> groups on the macrocycle’s periphery were prepared. The sterical and electronic role of the -CF<SUB>3</SUB> unit became evident through the study of the 5-CF<SUB>3</SUB> species which was found to be an excellent bromide photocatalyst (photoxidation with phenol, toluene, and benzene assays).</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
