Mutual Information Applied to Anomaly Detection

Kopylova, Yuliya,Buell, Duncan A.,Huang, Chin-Tser,Janies, Jeff The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2008 Journal of communications and networks Vol.10 No.1

Anomaly detection systems playa significant role in protection mechanism against attacks launched on a network. The greatest challenge in designing systems detecting anomalous exploits is defining what to measure. Effective yet simple, Shannon entropy metrics have been successfully used to detect specific types of malicious traffic in a number of commercially available IDS's. We believe that Renyi entropy measures can also adequately describe the characteristics of a network as a whole as well as detect abnormal traces in the observed traffic. In addition, Renyi entropy metrics might boost sensitivity of the methods when disambiguating certain anomalous patterns. In this paper we describe our efforts to understand how Renyi mutual information can be applied to anomaly detection as an offline computation. An initial analysis has been performed to determine how well fast spreading worms (Slammer, Code Red, and Welchia) can be detected using our technique. We use both synthetic and real data audits to illustrate the potentials of our method and provide a tentative explanation of the results.

      • Значение Каспия и его правового статуса в контексте геополитических учений К. Хаусхофера и А. Мэхэна

        Копылова Ирина Александровна(I.A. Kopylova) 경북대학교 러시아-유라시아 연구소 2020 러시아유라시아연구 Vol.4 No.1

The article is about problem of interpretation Caspian Sea’s status with a view to geopolitical dualism. Duality of approaches to the same object takes shape by dichotomy of conceptions “land” and “sea”. Their sense difference forms many-sided but integral idea about meaning of the Caspian Sea at the same time, in historic-political and geostrategic aspects. Caspian Sea appears here like the object of regional, also international geopolitics. So on the one hand, the partition of basin is the item of geopolitical areasʹ distribution under conditions regional statesʹ national interests. On the other hand, Caspian Sea displays itself valuable like important element of political and strategical littoral statesʹ potential. There was arisen particular dual understanding of basin in the context of the Convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea. Conceptions of “water space” and “seabed and minerals” receive specific political and legal interpretation. This way conceptual dualism notion of “sea” in policy causes meaning of the Caspian Sea like the object of active open geopolitical dialog that has historical base, but it has been changing in time and actualizing permanently.
