Genetic associations of LYN with systemic lupus erythematosus

We targeted LYN, a src-tyosine kinase involved in B-cell activation, in case–control association studies using populations of European-American, African-American and Korean subjects. Our combined European-derived population, consisting of 2463 independent cases and 3131 unrelated controls, shows significant association with rs6983130 in a female-only analysis with 2254 cases and 2228 controls (P=1.1 × 10<SUP>−4</SUP>, odds ratio (OR)=0.81 (95% confidence interval: 0.73–0.90)). This single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is located in the 5′ untranslated region within the first intron near the transcription initiation site of LYN. In addition, SNPs upstream of the first exon also show weak and sporadic association in subsets of the total European-American population. Multivariate logistic regression analysis implicates rs6983130 as a protective factor for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) susceptibility when anti-dsDNA, anti-chromatin, anti-52 kDa Ro or anti-Sm autoantibody status were used as covariates. Subset analysis of the European-American female cases by American College of Rheumatology classification criteria shows a reduction in the risk of hematological disorder with rs6983130 compared with cases without hematological disorders (P=1.5 × 10<SUP>−3</SUP>, OR=0.75 (95% CI: 0.62−0.89)). None of the 90 SNPs tested show significant association with SLE in the African American or Korean populations. This paper describes a Plasma Assisted Debinding and Sintering (PADS) equipment, which has been designed to process Metal Injection Molded (MIM) components. The use of a hybrid system combining a glow discharge with a conventional heating system makes debinding and sintering of MIM components, in the same heating cycle, a feasible industrial process. Characteristics as density, carbon content and mechanical properties are similar to traditionally processed MIM materials. The reduction of energy and gas consumption and shorter lead-times are economic advantages of PADS system. The clean environment of PADS is also an ecological advantage.

We report observation and resonance Raman studies of spin-pair excitations in YBa₂Cu₃O6+n (0.37<x<0.7) and YBa₂Cu₃O6 superconductors. These excitations at energy ∼3J(2700±150cm-1), similar to two-magnon excitations in insulators, are evidence that antiferromagnetic fluctuations with spatial extent of at least three lattice constants are not overdamped in the underdoped superconductors. With optimal hole doping, where Tc>80 K, the two-magnon peak can no longer be seen above the flat Raman continuum. Photoluminescence and the orgin of the broad-spectrum Raman continuum are also discussed.

<P>Seoul virus (SEOV) poses a worldwide public health threat. This virus, which is harbored by <I>Rattus norvegicus</I> and <I>R. rattus</I> rats, is the causative agent of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in humans, which has been reported in Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Africa. Defining SEOV genome sequences plays a critical role in development of preventive and therapeutic strategies against the unique worldwide hantavirus. We applied multiplex PCR–based next-generation sequencing to obtain SEOV genome sequences from clinical and reservoir host specimens. Epidemiologic surveillance of <I>R. norvegicus</I> rats in South Korea during 2000–2016 demonstrated that the serologic prevalence of enzootic SEOV infections was not significant on the basis of sex, weight (age), and season. Viral loads of SEOV in rats showed wide dissemination in tissues and dynamic circulation among populations. Phylogenetic analyses showed the global diversity of SEOV and possible genomic configuration of genetic exchanges.</P>

Raman scattering from charge and spin excitations in cuprates is reviewed. The two-magnon resonance Raman profile is used to determine the most probable energy for photon-assisted charge transfer leading to exchange between two spins. The difference between this energy and that for absorption is attributed to spin relaxation (spin polaron) effects. Two-magnon spectra in superconducting cuprates are presented. It is argued that their presence is evidence that the antiferromagnetic correlation length is equal to or greater than three lattice constants. The recently-discovered Raman-active excitons are described and possible assignments of them are discussed. It is pointed out that in highly correlated metals and insulators, the mechanisms for light scattering that are familiar for doped semiconductors or conventional metals are not necessarily the only ones that are operative.

A review of chronic pectoralis major tears: what options are available?

Rupture of the pectoralis major muscle typically occurs in the young, active male. Acute management of these injuries is recommended; however, what if the patient presents with a chronic tear of the pectoralis major? Physical exams and magnetic resonance imaging can help identify the injury and guide the physician with a plan for management. Nonoperative management is feasible, but is recommended for elderly, low-demand patients whose functional goals are minimal. Repair of chronic tears should be reserved for younger, healthier patients with high functional demands. Although operative management provides better functional outcomes, operative treatment of chronic pectoralis tears can be challenging. Tendon retraction, poor tendinous substance and quality of tissue, muscle atrophy, scar formation, and altered anatomy make direct repairs complicated, often necessitating auto- or allograft use. We review the various graft options and fixation methods that can be used when treating patients with chronic pectoralis major tears.
Dysautonomia in Narcolepsy: Evidence by Questionnaire Assessment

Background and Purpose Excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks are themain features of narcolepsy, but rapid-eye-movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD), hyposmia,and depression can also occur. The latter symptoms are nonmotor features in idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (IPD). In the present study, IPD-proven diagnostic tools were tested to determine whether they are also applicable in the assessment of narcolepsy. Methods This was a case-control study comparing 15 patients with narcolepsy (PN) and 15control subjects (CS) using the Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson’s Autonomic Test (SCOPA-AUT), Parkinson’s Disease Nonmotor Symptoms (PDNMS), University of Pennsylvania SmellTest, Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue test, Beck Depression Inventory, and the RBD screeningquestionnaire. Results Both the PN and CS exhibited mild hyposmia and no deficits in visual tests. Frequentdysautonomia in all domains except sexuality was found for the PN. The total SCOPA-AUTscore was higher for the PN (18.47±10.08, mean±SD) than for the CS (4.40±3.09), as was thePDNMS score (10.53±4.78 and 1.80±2.31, respectively). RBD was present in 87% of the PNand 0% of the CS. The PN were more depressed than the CS. The differences between the PNand CS for all of these variables were statistically significant (all p<0.05). Conclusions The results of this study provide evidence for the presence of dysautonomia andconfirm the comorbidities of depression and RBD in narcolepsy patients. The spectrum, whichis comparable to the nonmotor complex in IPD, suggests wide-ranging, clinically detectabledysfunction beyond the narcoleptic core syndrome.
