Medullary thyroid carcinoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma are different subtypes of thyroid carcinoma. The concomitant occurrence of medullary thyroid carcinoma and papil-lary thyroid carcinoma as a collision tumor is rare. We describe five cases of medullary and papillary thyroid carcinoma as a collision tumor. Four women and one man underwent thyroidectomy for treatment of thyroid cancer. Collision tumor was then detected by histopathologic finding. Genetic testing, point mutation of the BRAF gene or mutation of the RET gene was performed in three cases. However, only one case had point mutation of the BRAF gene. Exact diagnosis of this uncommon event is important because the strategies for treatment of papillary thyroid carcinoma and medullary thyroid carcinoma are different.

<P>Conclusion. Postoperative airway complication is not very common after ACSS. AEP contributed to reduce the incidence of airway complications. The potentially life-threatening event of loss of airway patency, even though it is a rare complication, should be cautiously analyzed with identification of risk factors before the surgery.</P>

<P>A practically available strategy is employed to improve the cycle life of lithium-sulfur batteries. The simple process of activation cycling at the polysulfide dissolution region leads to the partial dissolution of polysulfides and the redistribution of sulfur on the electrode. After 50 cycles, the modified activation-cycled sulfur cathode exhibits a capacity that is roughly double that of a cathode without activation cycling.</P>

Background and Objectives Beta-blockers (BBs) improve prognosis in heart failure (HF), which is mediated by lowering heart rate (HR). However, HR has no prognostic implication in atrial fibrillation (AF) and also BBs have not been shown to improve prognosis in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) with AF. This study assessed the prognostic implication of BB in HFpEF with AF according to discharge HR. Methods From the Korean Acute Heart Failure Registry, 687 patients with HFpEF and AF were selected. Study subjects were divided into 4 groups based on 75 beats per minute (bpm) of HR at discharge and whether or not they were treated with BB at discharge. Results Of the 687 patients with HFpEF and AF, 128 (36.1%) were in low HR group and 121 (36.4%) were in high HR group among those treated with BB at discharge. In high HR group, HR at discharge was significantly faster in BB non-users (85.5±9.1 bpm vs. 89.2±12.5 bpm, p=0.005). In the Cox model, BB did not improve 60-day rehospitalization (hazard ratio, 0.93; 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 0.35–2.47) or mortality (hazard ratio, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.22–2.74) in low HR group. However, in high HR group, BB treatment at discharge was associated with 82% reduced 60-day HF rehospitalization (hazard ratio, 0.18; 95% CI, 0.04–0.81), but not with mortality (hazard ratio, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.20–2.98). Conclusions In HFpEF with AF, in patients with HR over 75 bpm at discharge, BB treatment at discharge was associated with a reduced 60-day rehospitalization rate. Host Country’s Non-economic Factors, Local Managers, and Foreign Affiliate Performance

Purpose - This paper examines the effects of host country’s non-economic factors on foreign affiliate’s financial and operational performance. Design/Methodology - Using Korean-owned foreign affiliate-level data, we employ various measures that represent host country’s non-economic factors and examine their effects on foreign affiliate’s performance. We further investigate the effects of local top managers and local middle managers on the impact of country’s non-economic factors on foreign affiliate’s performance. Findings - We find that local top managers are effective in increasing foreign affiliate’s financial performance by dealing with institutional and cultural factors, particularly in high-income countries, while local middle managers are effective in increasing affiliate’s operational performance by responding to the changes in doing business factors, particularly in low-income countries. Originality/value - Considering that most of previous FDI studies focus on examining host country’s economic factors on firm’s FDI decision, our findings suggest that country’s non-economic factors are strongly associated with actual business performance of foreign affiliates.
Experimental study on viscous effect in roll and heave motions of a rectangular structure

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study focuses on the interaction between roll and heave motions of a rectangular structure, and the heave influence on the viscous effect on the roll motion experimentally in a two-dimensional wave tank. The dynamic responses were investigated with a range of regular wave periods, including longer, equal to, shorter than the natural roll wave period of the structure with wave steepness in beam sea conditions. The velocity fields were obtained using particle image velocimetry in the vicinity of the structure to elucidate the viscous effect on the roll motion, and its different features between the heave fixed and free conditions. Velocity maps were compared systematically to understand the heave and roll influences on the viscous effect for four motion conditions of all fixed, roll fixed and heave free, roll free and heave fixed, and roll and heave free. It is found that the heave motion has a significant impact on the viscous effect and the roll motion. The roll motion has the nonlinearity and the vortex strength was intensifying with the increase of the wave steepness at the natural roll period. The heave motion should be considered to estimate accurate roll damping and motion of floating structures.</P>

<P>We present the clinical and radiological findings of seven patients with a seemingly new variant of Desbuquois dysplasia (DBQD) and emphasize the radiographic findings in the hand. All cases showed remarkably accelerated carpal bone ages in childhood, but none of the patients had an accessory ossification center distal to the second metacarpal, or thumb anomalies, instead, there was shortness of one or all metacarpals, with elongated appearance of phalanges, resulting in nearly equal length of the second to fifth fingers. The two sibs followed for 20 years showed narrowing and fusion of the intercarpal joints with age and ultimately, precocious degenerative arthritis. The changes in the feet were similar to those of the hands, with advanced tarsal bone ages, shortness of the metatarsals and elongation of the second and third toes. Other radiographic findings were narrowness of the intervertebral disc spaces resulting in precocious degenerative spondylosis and progressive scoliosis. The femoral neck was short and thick and showed a persistent enlargement of the lesser trochanter with a high-riding, bulbous greater trochanter that became more prominent with age. Molecular testing of the diastrophic dysplasia sulfate transporter (DTDST) gene was performed on six patients and no mutations were detected. This radiographic and clinical observation further adds to the evidence that there may be subtypes of DBQD. Long-term follow-up showed that severe precocious osteoarthritis of the hand and spine is a major manifestation of this specific variant. © 2010 Wiley-Liss, Inc.</P>

<P>Lipocalin-2 (LCN2) is a member of the highly heterogeneous secretory protein family of lipocalins and increases in its levels can contribute to neurodegeneration in the adult brain. However, there are no reports on the role of LCN2 in Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, we report for the first time that LCN2 expression is increased in the substantia nigra (SN) of patients with PD. In mouse brains, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) treatment for a neurotoxin model of PD significantly upregulated LCN2 expression, mainly in reactive astrocytes in both the SN and striatum. The increased LCN2 levels contributed to neurotoxicity and neuroinflammation, resulting in disruption of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic (DA) projection and abnormal locomotor behaviors, which were ameliorated in LCN2-deficient mice. Similar to the effects of MPTP treatment, LCN2-induced neurotoxicity was also observed in the 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-treated animal model of PD. Moreover, treatment with the iron donor ferric citrate (FC) and the iron chelator deferoxamine mesylate (DFO) increased and decreased, respectively, the LCN2-induced neurotoxicity in vivo. In addition to the in vivo results, 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+)induced neurotoxicity in cocultures of mesencephalic neurons and astrocytes was reduced by LCN2 gene deficiency in the astrocytes and conditioned media derived from MPP+-treated SH-SY5Y neuronal enhanced glial expression of LCN2 in vitro. Therefore, our results demonstrate that astrocytic LCN2 upregulation in the lesioned DA system may play a role as a potential pathogenic factor in PD and suggest that inhibition of LCN2 expression or activity may be useful in protecting the nigrostriatal DA system in the adult brain.</P>
