<P>We propose a new, simple theory-based, accurate polarization microscope for birefringence imaging of cytoskeletal structures of biological cells. The new theory lets us calculate very easily the phase retardation and the orientation of the principal axis of a particular area of a biological living cell in media by simply measuring the intensity variation of a pixel of a CCD camera while rotating a single polarizer. Just from the measured intensity maxima and minima, the amount of phase retardation delta between the fast and the slow axis of the sample area is obtained with an accuracy of 5.010+/-0.798x10(-3) rad. The orientation of the principal axis is calculated from the angle of the polarizer for the intensity maximum. We have compared our microscopes with two previously reported polarization microscopes for birefringence imaging of cytoskeletal structures and demonstrated the utility of our microscope with the phase retardation and orientation images of weakly invasive MCF7 and highly invasive MDA MB 231 human breast cancer cells as an example.</P>
Studies on the mechanism of cytotoxicities of polyacetylenes against L1210 cell

This study was performed to investigate the mechanism of in vitro cytotosic actions of polyacetylenes which are panaxydol, panaxynol and panaxytriol isolated from Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer. DNA synthesis of L1210 cells was significantly inhibited with dose dependent pattern when L1210 cells were treated for 1 hour with over 5 .mu.g/ml of polyacetylenes. Panaxydol which had the most potent cytotoxicity among three polyacetylenes showed also the strongest inhibitory effect on DNA synthesis. Intracellular cyclic AMP levels of L1210 cells treated with 2.5 $\mu$g/ml of panaxydol or panaxytriol were significantly elevated on the incubation duration. The elevation of cyclic AMP levels by panaxytriol was higher than that by panaxydol, but no significant increase in cyclic AMP by panaxynol was observed. All three polyacetylenes had no effect on glycolysis of L1210 cells. Electron microscopic observations revealed that polyacetylenes caused damage to plasma membranes of L1210 cells in proportion to their cytotoxicities at each $ED_{50}$ value (panaxydol > panaxynol> panaxytriol). These results suggest that cytotoxicities of polyacetylenes against L1210 cells might be mediated by elevated cyclic AMP level, even though the relationship among their cytotoxicities, inhibitory effect on DNA synthesis and ability to elevation of cyclic AMP level are not fully agreed, and might be also related to membrane damage.

An approach for designing a universal architectural basis is presented. To achieve balanced high performance computing capability, a computer system should support both the system throughput and the execution speedup of a unit task. The goal of this research is to design an architecture that can support both the system throughput and the execution speedup of a given task. In general, any single parallel architecture is not ideal for the broad computational spectrum of algorithm characteristics. The underlying architecture is constructed as combining the throughput oriented multiprocessing architecture for the baseline engine with the function oriented parallel architecture for the speedup engine. The function oriented parallel system (FOPS) can be customized for any specific application domain and is optimally tuned for the specific group of parallelism. In this approach, a FOPS is utilized via parallel function calls from any process running on a processor of the throughput engine and a parallel function call supported is the call of both the parallel hardware and the software execution. Single or multiple function calls can be supported for any specific application area depending on needs. The research is to design the underlying base architecture that can be optimally configured for any specific application purpose to attain ultimate performance increase.

Occipital neuralgia is a form of headache that involves the posterior occiput in the greater or lesser occipital nerve distribution. Pain can be severe and persistent with conservative treatment. We present a case of intractable occipital neuralgia that conventional therapeutic modalities failed to ameliorate. We speculate that, in this case, the cause of headache could be the greater occipital nerve entrapment by the obliquus capitis inferior muscle. After steroid and local anesthetic injection into obliquus capitis inferior muscles under fluoroscopic and sonographic guidance, the visual analogue scale was decreased from 9-10/10 to 1-2/10 for 2-3 weeks. The patient eventually got both greater occipital neurectomy and partial resection of obliquus capitis inferior muscles due to the short term effect of the injection. The successful steroid and local anesthetic injection for this occipital neuralgia shows that the refractory headache was caused by entrapment of greater occipital nerves by obliquus capitis inferior muscles.

<P>Hydroxyapatite (HA) coating on titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotubular surface has been developed to complement the defects of both TiO2 and HA. A sol-gel processing technique was used to coat HA on TiO2 nanotubular surface. All the titanium discs were blasted with resorbable blast media (RBM). RBM-blasted Ti surface, anodized Ti surface, and sol-gel HA coating on the anodized Ti surface were prepared. The characteristics of samples were observed using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. Biologic responses were evaluated with human osteosarcoma MG63 cells in vitro. The top of the TiO2 nanotubes was not completely covered by HA particles when the coating time was less than 60 sec. It was demonstrated the sol-gel derived HA film was well-crystallized and this enhanced biologic responses in early stage cell response.</P>

<P>This study examined the effect of the immobilization of the Gly-Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser (GRGDS) peptide on titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotube via chemical grafting on osteoblast-like cell (MG-63) viability and differentiation. The specimens were divided into two groups; TiO2 nanotubes and GRGDS-immobilized TiO2 nanotubes. The surface characteristics of GRGDS-immobilized TiO2 nanotubes were observed by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The morphology of cells on specimens was observed by FE-SEM after 2 hr and 24 hr. The level of cell viability was investigated via a tetrazolium (XTT) assay after 2 and 4 days. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was evaluated to measure the cell differentiation after 4 and 7 days. The presence of nitrogen up-regulation or C=O carbons confirmed that TiO2 nanotubes were immobilized with GRGDS peptides. Cell adhesion was enhanced on the GRGDS-immobilized TiO2 nanotubes compared to TiO2 nanotubes. Furthermore, significantly increased cell spreading and proliferation were observed with the cells grown on GRGDS-immobilized TiO2 nanotubes (P < .05). However, there was no significant difference in ALP activity between GRGDS-immobilized TiO2 nanotubes and TiO2 nanotubes. These results suggest that the GRGDS-immobilized TiO2 nanotubes might be effective in improving the osseointegration of dental implants.</P>

<P>A novel optical true time-delay (TTD) feeder for phased-array antennas incorporating a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) prism and optical fibers with metal film deposited on their cleaved ends is proposed. By arranging a metal-film reflector at one end of the fiber delay line with FBGs written at different locations, one FBG for every fiber delay line can be saved (compared to FBG-only TTD feeders) and flexibility of wavelength selection is also provided due to the uniform reflectance of the metal film in a broad wavelength range. A TTD feeder with two fiber delay lines for 10-GHz linear phased-array antennas is built to steer a beam into three directions at 0° and ±30°. The experimental results of the time delays agree well with those calculated at all the steering angles. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J2ME 를 이용한 모바일 디바이스에서의 원격 제어 시스템 설계 및 구현

최근 들어 유선 인터넷 환경에서의 다양한 컨텐츠가 무선 인터넷 기반의 환경으로 이동하면서 휴대폰이나 PDA, PMP 와 같은 소형 모바일 디바이스를 이용한 무선 인터넷 서비스가 급격히 늘어나고 있다. 본 논문에서는 모바일 환경에서 원격제어 시스템 구현을 위해 JAVA 의 JVM(Java Virtual Machine) 및 API 로 구성된 J2ME(JAVA 2 Micro Edition) 기술과 에뮬레이터를 이용하여 모바일 디바이스에서 원거리의 시스템을 원격제어하고 데이터의 전송을 가능하게 하는 시스템(Smart-Anywhere)을 설계 및 구현하였다. 이로써 향후 다양한 모바일 응용프로그램을 개발하는데 기초가 될 뿐만 아니라 언제 어디서나 디바이스간의 통신이 가능한 Smart-Anywhere 엔진의 이점을 이용하여 미래의 유비쿼터스 홈 네트워크 환경에서 각종 장비들에 대한 접근과 원격 제어할 수 있는 시스템에도 널리 활용 할 수 있을 것이다.
