Visceral Fat Thickness Predicts Fatty Liver in Koreans with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

<P>Our aim was to study whether visceral adiposity is a predictor of diabetic fatty liver in Korean type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this study, abdominal ultrasonography was used to assess the presence of fatty liver in 1,898 patients with type 2 diabetes. We measured visceral fat thickness by high-resolutional ultrasonography and insulin resistance by Kitt. Half of the cohort had a fatty liver (50.2%). High visceral fat thickness had the highest odds ratio for developing fatty liver in both sexes (odds ratio [S.D]: 3.14 [2.24-4.69], <I>p</I><0.00 in male, 2.84 [2.04-3.93], <I>p</I><0.00 in female). In addition, visceral fat thickness of 42.45 and 37.7 mm in men and women, respectively, were chosen as the discriminating value to predict the presence of fatty liver with a sensitivity of 71% and 73% and a specificity of 70% and 70% in men and women, respectively. The area under the receiver-operating characteristics curve was 0.759 in men and 0.764 in women. Therefore we could conclude that the degree of visceral adiposity predicts the presence of fatty liver type 2 diabetes mellitus, whether centrally obese or not, suggesting that hepatic fat accumulation in a diabetic fatty liver may be influenced by visceral fat accumulation regardless of waist circumference.</P>
Preservation of Some Partial Ordering under Formation of k-out-of-n Systems of Like components

In this paper, we shall convey preservation of some partial orderings and closures of some positive ageing classes under k-out-of-n systems of like components. That is, if the life time of a component A is larger than that of a component B in any of the NBU, DMRL, WBUE, HNBUE, NBUFR and NBUFRA orderings, then a k-out-of-n system formed by i.i.d. components of type A has larger life time, in that ordering, than that of a similar system consisting of n i.i.d. components type of B. And using these partial orderings, closures of positive aging classes(NBU, DMRL, NBUE, HNBUE, NBUFR and NBUFRA) under the coherent system like components.
(-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate and Hinokitiol Reduce Melanin Synthesis via Decreased MITF Production

In this study, the effects of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and/or hinokitiol (${\beta}-thujaplicin$) on melanogenesis were investigated. Our results showed that both EGCG and hinokitiol significantly inhibited melanin synthesis in a concentration-dependent manner, and that their hypopigmenting effects were stronger than that of kojic acid, which is known to inhibit melanin formation in melanocytes and melanoma cells. Interestingly, EGCG did not show any additive hypopigmenting effect in combination with kojic acid, though EGCG did show a synergistic effect in combination with hinokitiol. Several reports indicate that the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) induces microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) degradation. Accordingly, the effects of EGCG and hinokitiol on the ERK signaling pathway were examined. EGCG and hinokitiol induced neither ERK activation nor MITF degradation. On the other hand, both EGCG and hinokitiol reduced the protein levels of MITF and of tyrosinase, the rate limiting melanogenic enzyme, whereas kojic acid had no effect. In addition, hinokitiol strongly downregulated the activity of tyrosinase, whereas EGCG or kojic acid had only a little effect. These results show that both EGCG and hinokitiol reduce MITF production, and suggest that reduced tyrosinase activity by hinokitiol explains their synergistic effect on melanogenesis.
FINE STRUCTURE OF QUIESCENT PROMINENCES

Fine structures of a quiescent prominence are studied by analyzing high resolution H alpha filtergrams and H alpha line spectra observed at the Hida Observatory of Kyoto University. We have found two kinds of downward motions in the prominence. One of them is a movement with a constant acceleration below the solar gravity(${\simeq}1/4g_s$) and the other with an uniform velocity(${\simeq}16Km/s$). The average life time and the size of prominence knots are estimated to be about 7 minutes and 4000Km, respectively. Spatial and brightness distribution of knots are also presented in this paper. With the analytical solutions derived from magnetostatic equilibrium in the prominence, we have examined the filamentary structure based on the Kippenhahn-Schluter model. Sag angles of the magnetic fields supporting the prominence matter are predicted from the observed density profile.
HYDROGEN EMISSION SPECTRA OF QUIESCENT PROMINENCES

Theoretical calculations of the combined radiative transfer and statistical equilibrium equation including the charge-particle conservations have been earned out for a multilevel hydrogen atom in quiescent prominences. Cool and dense models show the steep changes of population and radiation field in the vicinity of the surface, while these physical quantities remain unchanged for models with temperature of 7,300K, regardless of total densities. Ionization rate of hydrogen atom related with metallic line formation varies in considerable amounts from the surface to the center of model prominences cooler than 6,300K. However, such cool models cannot release enough hydrogen line emissions to explain observed intensities. Prominence models with a temperature higher than 8,000K can yield the centrally reversed Lyman line profiles confirmed by satellite EUV observations. We find that queiscent prominence with a density between $2{\times}10^{11}$ and $10^{12}cm^{-3}$ should be in temperature range between 6,300K and 8,300K, in order to explain consistently observed H alpha, beta line emissions and $n_p/n_l$ ratio.
SOME PARTIAL ORDERINGS OF LIFE DISTRIBUTIONS UNDER IMPERFECT REPAIR MODEL

사전유지정책을 연구하는데 있어서, 불완전 수리 모형은 실재적인 상황에서 자주 일어나는 모형이다. 따라서 불완전 수리 모형하에서 편순서 및 수명분포족의 보존 연구는 필수적이라 하겠다. 본 논문에서는 다음과 같은 사실을 얻었다. (1) 두 시스템 분포사이에 어떤 편순서(FR, ST ordering) 관계가 성립한다면, 불완전 수리 모형하에서 두 시스템사이에 이 편순서 관계가 성립된다. (2) 시스템이 어떤 수명분포족(IFR, NBU, DMRL, NBUE, NBUFR, NBUFRA)에 속한다면, 불완전 수리 모형하에서 시스템은 이 수명분포족에 속함을 알 수 있다.
