        Economic-based approach for predicting optimal water pipe renewal period based on risk and failure rate

        This study suggests a method for calculating the benefits of water pipe renewal based on an estimate of the water supply suspension risk. The proposed method based on five benefit items is more direct and specific than other benefit estimation methods. In addition, a methodology evaluating the economics of pipe renewal based on pipe failure rate is proposed for estimating the optimal renewal point from an economic perspective. By estimating the optimal renewal period based on a yearly benefit cost ratio per pipe in a case study area, it was possible to draft an optimal renewal plan for the subject region from an economic perspective. Compared with other methodologies, a reasonable optimal renewal period was derived from an economic point of view. The result of this study may be used to develop future water pipe renewal plans. Moreover, the proposed methodologies and results derived from this study can be applied to asset management plans.

        Fermentation of Oak Tree Sawdust affects Peanut Sprout Growth and Fungal Microbiomes

        This study demonstrated that the fermentation of oak tree sawdust increases peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) seed germination, sprout biomass, and the total vigor index (TVI). The seed germination rate (0, 3.9, 30.8, and 65.4%) varied significantly among the different fermentation treatments (0, 30, 45, and 60 days, respectively). Seedlings grown in the sawdust with the 60-day fermentation period showed the highest weight (2.8 g) with the longest epicotyl with true leaves (2.5 ㎝), hypocotyls (2.4 ㎝), and roots (6.6 ㎝), consequently having the highest TVI (629.23). Seedlings grown for 0 and 30 days in fermented sawdust had the lowest TVIs (32.7 and 0, respectively). In a microbiome analysis, the fungal community varied among the different fermentation treatments, suggesting that the fungal community affects the seed germination physiology.

      • Investigation of coolant flow distribution and the effects of cavitation on water pump performance in an automotive cooling system

        <P>Cavitation is a well-known phenomenon that causes performance losses in all kinds of hydraulic machinery, including automotive water pumps. The present study uses a coolant flow test rig to investigate cavitation in water pumps. The coolant flow rate was measured for various coolant temperatures and compositions. This study validates that cavitation occurs during the coolant warm-up period, in which coolant temperature is typically below 80°C. Cavitation was also related to a drop in the water pump inlet pressure and driving torque. Based on the results from this study, it can be concluded that cavitation is affected by coolant temperature, engine speed, and coolant composition. Furthermore, it is found that the use of an electric water pump is effective for minimizing the pressure drop and driving loss of the pump. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</P>

        Characterization of products from Fe(CO)<sub>5</sub> seeded CO diffusion flame

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Although Iron Pentacarbonyl (Fe(CO)<SUB>5</SUB>), one of common metallic additives has been applied to soot emission suppression in a few decades, the correct mechanism on soot reduction is not well-understood and still far controversial. Particular species presented in the flame could provide valuable information on the mechanisms of chemical reactions. With the fact in mind, the state of the fuel additive was identified using a variety of laser-based diagnostics and spectroscopic methods such as <I>in situ</I> Raman spectroscopy, laser-induced fluorescence (LIF), laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Preliminary sets of experiments were conducted with Fe(CO)<SUB>5</SUB> seeded CO diffusion flame for eliminating the external environment interferences and variations due to soot particles that are normally produced from hydrocarbon fuel combustion. Any specific form of iron oxide was hardly detected while strong Fe signal was observed with <I>in sit</I>u analyses. The analytical results indicate that elemental Fe play crucial role as heterogeneous catalyst on carbon oxidation in any carbon-based fuel diffusion flame.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The dominant iron species obtained from Fe(CO)<SUB>5</SUB> seeded CO flame was elemental Fe. </LI> <LI> The formation of iron oxide was not observed using <I>in situ</I> Raman spectroscopy. </LI> <LI> Fe atomic emissions were observed using Fe LIF spectroscopy. </LI> <LI> No FeO florescence signal was detected. </LI> <LI> Fe absorption spectroscopy supported that elemental Fe are the major species. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Functional analysis of plant-derived HER2-positive breast cancer recombinant antibody anti-HER2 VHH-FcK

        Overexpression of human epidermal growth factor receptor type 2 (HER2) protein is one of the prognostic factors to diagnose breast cancer, and HER2 is proto-oncogene located on chromosome 17, and overexpression of this oncogene plays an essential role in the growth and progression of certain violent types of breast cancer. This study demonstrated the expression of the anti-HER2 camelid single domain antibody VHH in tobacco plant. And we confirmed the function of recombinant VHH for the treatment of breast cancer. The anti-HER2 VHH was fused to human IgG Fc domain along with KDEL endoplasmic reticulum (ER) (VHH-FcK) in a gene expression cassette. The plant gene expression cassette was transferred to tobacco plants using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The transformants were screened by PCR and western blots. ELISA confirmed the binding activity of purified anti-HER2 VHH-FcK to HER2 positive breast cancer cell line BT-474. In conclusion, this study verified the possibility of anti-HER2 VHH-FcK as a therapeutic agent and suggests that the anti-breast cancer anti-HER2 VHH-FcK can be expressed, properly assembled and purified from plant expression system, which can be as an alternative system for antibody production.

      • Sustainable Supply Chain

        This research is motivated by two search questions on supply chain. What will be the supply chain value in the future and how can we increase the future supply chain value continually? For answer to these questions, we propose the concept, theory, and framework of sustainable supply chain (SSC). Firstly, we newly define the SSC and its value. SSC is a new paradigm that can generate new supply chain value by managerial innovation to not only maximize the supply chain profitability but also minimize its environmental and social impact. When the corporate sustainable management is popular among the global companies, we explain the reason why the scope of sustainable management should be expanded from companywide to supply chain using some cases. Secondly, we propose the SSC theory, which describes the essentiality of paradigm shift from conventional supply chain (CSC) to SSC. We prove the SSC theory based on the concept of externality and social surplus in welfare economics. Finally, the SSC framework is presented. We depict the SSC framework as SSC house visually and explain that sustainable procurement and sustainable consumption is a necessary and sufficient condition of SSC. Even if there are so many features of supply chain to increase its future competitiveness in the past researches, we assert that SSC can be the right answer to our research questions.

      • A Natural Remote Target Selection Technique on Large Displays

        In order to simplify the selection of remote targets on large displays, a novel technique called ShifTable is presented in this paper, which is similar to natural selection motion. ShifTable starts with users pushing toward the desired target; the interface shifts against the push direction at a faster speed than the user’s hand; the user selects the target when it comes near; the interface goes back to the initial location, ending ShifTable. Besides, during the selection, ShifTable can be undone whenever user double-taps the interface. In the design of ShifTable, we took impact of gestures on musculoskeletal system into consideration and made the technique as simple as possible. In summary, ShifTable had obvious advantages over the existing techniques on large displays for its simplicity and naturalness.

      • A Stock Prediction System Based on News and Twitter

        As more concerns by the public about stock markets grow bigger, the more the people’s attention is drawn to a systematic method to predict stock prices that fluctuate. More importantly, as the modern stock markets react very sensitively to information for their stock prices, it is very important to predict the prices for investors. For that, this study shall utilize opinion mining and mechanical learning, which are widely used to analyze the meaning of information in systematic ways on analyzing data from news and Twitter to suggest a system that predicts stock prices. The stock price prediction system consists of a data collector, vocabulary analyzer, sentiment analyzer and stock price predictor. The stock price predicting steps consist of collecting contents of news and Twitter, extracting vocabularies by using morpheme analysis, executing sentiment analysis then predicting stock prices via mechanical learning. In order to evaluate the usefulness of the suggested method, we used the stock data for the last whole year on 7 companies in the bio industry that are most sensitive to information for the tests, and the accuracy of the results showed above 80%. The results of this study can be regarded as one of the methods to effectively predict stock prices of companies from various backgrounds in this modern information era that changes dramatically every moment.
