The paleofloral change from the Aniai-type to the Daijima-type during the Miocene is the most distinctive and representative one of the six floral changes in the Japanese Archipelago during the Tertiary. These floral types are based mainly on compressed or imprinted leaf fossils. In Korea, the transition-type between the Aniai- and Daijima-type floras has been proposed based on the fossil wood assemblages, and the Hatamura Formation, which is the same age as the Daijima Formation, has yielded abundant fossil woods. To confirm whether the fossil wood assemblages are in agreement with the paleofloras inferred from fossil leaves, the fossil woods from the Hatamura Formation were studied. We found that warm temperate and daijiman elements, such as Keteleeria, Taxodioxylon cunninghamioides, T. sequoianum and Pinus, were present in the Hatamura Formation. Therefore, it can be concluded that the fossil wood types from the Hatamura Formation agree well with the Daijima-type Flora. This result, in turn, verifies the existence of transitional flora between the Aniai- and Daijima-types in Northeastern Asia

Ulmaceous fossil leaves were collected from the Geumgwangdong Formation at Donghae-myeon, Pohang City. In addition the fossils collected by previous researchers and deposited in the Museum of Tohoku and Akita University in Japan were examined and photographed. As a result, four taxa, Ulmus carpinoides Goeppert, U. longifolia Unger, U. shiragica Huzioka, Zelkova ungeri (Ettingshausen) Kovats, were described from the Geumgwangdong Formation. The U. longifolia is described for the first time in Korea. A study on the taxonomic enumeration, description and palaeo-environmental significances based on the nearest living relatives was undertaken for the four taxa. The concept of morphotype and leaf architectural terms were discussed for the standardized description of dicotyledon fossil leaves from the Korean deposits.

Objective: Fukuoka Dental College established a satellite clinic, the Center for Oral Diseases (COD), in December 2011. In this study, we analyzed halitosis patients and the role of dental hygienists. Methods: Approximately 70% of the patients were female and most were in their 40s. We analyzed the possible causes of halitosis. Results: More than half of the patients exhibited a thick tongue coating. Low salivary flow was present in 23.6% of males and in 39.4% of females. Pocket depth ≥6 mm was found in 44.2% of males and in 16.7% of females. We also analyzed treatment provided after breath odor measurement. Most of the patients with physiological halitosis and pseudohalitosis did not receive further treatment, but some were treated at the COD with scaling and professional tooth cleaning. Many of the patients with genuine halitosis received dental treatment at the COD. We referred patients from other clinics and from distant locations to their local doctors for treatment. Conclusion: Halitosis had various causes, and the role of dental hygienists, including scaling, root planing, and tooth brushing instruction, are important in decreasing breath odor. Dental hygienists play an important role in communication with halitosis patients.
