The formation of 8-hydroxyguanine (8-OH-Gua) in DNA by oxygen radicals was discovered in 1984[1]. Oxygen radicals are formed in vivo by ionizing radiation and chemical carcinognes as well as by normal oxygen metabolism, and induce oxidative damage, such as 8-OH-Gua, in cellula DNA. Since Floyd et al. reported the analysis of 8-OH-Gua with high sensitivity by an HPLC-ECD system in 1986[2], many researchers have started to monitor the 8-OH-Gua levels in cellular DNA.
Incidence and Skeletal Features of Developmental Cervical and Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

Study Design: Cross-sectional study.Purpose: To report the prevalence and relationship of developmental cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis (DCSS and DLSS) with the bone parameters of the skull and extremities.Overview of Literature: DCSS and DLSS are found occasionally in daily practice. DCSS and DLSS can cause compressive myelopathy, radiculopathy, and cauda equina syndrome; however, data on their prevalence and correlation with skull and skeletal extremity profiles is scarce.Methods: A cross-sectional measurement study of 293 whole-body dried-bone samples was conducted. We measured the anteroposterior (AP) and transverse diameter of the fourth to sixth cervical vertebrae (C4–C6) and third to fifth lumbar vertebrae (L3–L5). Stenosis of the cervical spine and lumbar spine was defined as an AP diameter of <12 mm and <13 mm, respectively. We also measured the skull circumference, the AP and transverse diameters of the foramen magnum, the inner and outer inter distances between the left and right orbital bones, the humerus length, and the femoral length. Kruskal-Wallis and post hoc analyses were used in the statistical analyses.Results: The age was 22–93 years. DCSS was found in 59 (20.1%) and DLSS in 28 (9.6%). Twelve samples had both DCSS and DLSS (development spinal stenosis, DSS). When compared to the “no spinal stenosis sample,” DSS (−), DCSS and DSS had a significantly smaller skull circumference, the transverse diameter of the foramen magnum, and inner and outer distance between the orbital bone (<i>p</i><0.05). There was no significant difference in humeral length, femoral length, or AP diameter of the foramen magnum.Conclusions: DCSS was correlated with a small skull, a small transverse diameter of the foramen magnum, and a small orbital bone. A small skull was strongly associated with a small cervical canal. DLSS, on the other hand, was unrelated to either a small cervical canal or a small skull.
Cryopreservation and Cryobiology of Mammalian Oocytes

The cryopreservation of embryos has become a powerful tool in assisted reproduction in several mammalian species and a more important technology in bioscience, agriculture and medicine. Embryos are cryopreserved by slow freezing or by vitrification. However, consistently high survival has not been obtained in most oocytes and in some embryos. The main reasons for the low survival would be sensitivity to low temperatures, which leads to chilling injury, and low permeability of the cell membrane, which leads to the formation of intracellular ice. As a stratefy aiming to overcome these injuries, modified vitrification methods have been devised in which the cooling and warming rate is markedly increased by minimizing the volume of the solution and the container. The modified methods use electron microscope grids, open-pulled straws, cryoloops, or container-less microdrops. Ultrarapid vitrification is a promising approach to overcoming the problems of the chilling sensitivity and lower permeability of oocytes/embryos. However, to make this method more reliable, defining the optimal combinations of cooling rate and the composition of the vitrification solution for each type of oocyte/embryo will be necessary. Refinement of the procedures for practical use, including labeling and stable preservation, would also be important.
Performance of Seismic Protective Systems for Super-Tall Buildings and Their Contents

A much higher level of seismic performance is needed for supertall buildings due to increased demands for their functional continuities and the recognized needs for their continuing emergence in metropolitan areas. This paper analyzes, compares, and contrasts responses recorded during the 2011 Tohoku-oki Earthquake of different supertall buildings featuring conventional and vibration-controlled engineering systems. The superior performance and advantage of the latter are pointed out, and the typical dynamic properties, response characteristics, and effects on the secondary system are discussed. Ongoing efforts to enhance vibration control performance are described, covering the development of specifications, use of performance curves and targeted displacement design, and methods to find appropriate locations of damper installation resulting in a minimized amount of dampers.
The current status and history of AFLAS

The Asian federation of laboratory animal science associations (AFLAS) was established on November 29, 2003, and will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2023. During this time, the number of AFLAS member associations and societies increased from six founders to eleven, and eight AFLAS congresses and 19 council meetings were held. In addition, the education and training system of laboratory animal science and technology funding program to support the activities of AFLAS member associations or societies started in 2015. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic had a great impact on the activities of AFLAS, and the 10th Congress which was scheduled to be held in Thailand in 2021 had to be canceled. AFLAS must have its members work together to overcome this difficult situation and further develop.

We examined the temperature-dependent development, adult longevity, fertility, and sex ratio of the whitefly Aleurocanthus camelliae, which infests tea plants, under laboratory conditions. Eggs and nymphs were reared on tea shoots at 20, 22.5, 25, and 27.5 °C with a photoperiod of 15L:9D. The developmental zero of the egg, total nymphal stadia, and egg–adult duration of A. camelliae were 12.6, 11.6, and 11.9 °C, respectively,with thermal constants of 176.7, 394.7, and 569.9 d-degrees, respectively. The mean longevities of adult female and male A. camelliae were 4.4 and 2.7 d, respectively. These results suggested A. camelliae voltinism of two to three generations per year in Kanto, Tokai, and Kinki districts and three to five generations per year in the Shikoku and Kyushu districts, Japan.
On-cam operation of counter-rotating type hydroelectric unit

To cope with the warming global environments, the authors had proposed the counter-rotating type hydroelectric unit, which is composed of the tandem runners and the peculiar generator with double rotational armatures. This unit can be supplied to various water circumstances, for instance, the traditional large hydropower, the mini/micro hydropower, and the tidal power. The fundamental performances and the flow conditions around the runners have been investigated and the design materials for the runners have been presented. Continuously, this paper discusses the performances at the oncam operation, in the large tidal power station. The model unit was operated while keeping the relative rotational speed constant nT = 900 min-1, namely 60 Hz, irrespective of the hydropower circumstances. The output and the hydraulic efficiency are affected by the blade setting angles of the front and the rear runners. Resultantly, both optimum angles giving the maximum output and/or the maximum efficiency are presented at the various discharges/heads.
Photoluminescence Imaging of Luminous Paint for Surface Temperature Monitoring

Temperature monitoring is essentially important for stable control of fabrication processes. In order to develop a convenient 2-dimensional temperature monitoring system using a thermo-paint, photoluminescence (PL) images are observed from the luminous paints at various temperatures. Commercially available and in-house modified luminous paints are evaluated for improving temperature sensitivity and stability of the thermo-paints. Temperature dependences of PL images from various luminous paints are reported for developing temperature monitoring procedure using a thermo-paint.
