<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> ion stimulates the DNA strand exchange reaction catalyzed by RecA, a key step in homologous recombination. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the role of Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> and the strand exchange reaction itself, we investigated the interaction of RecA with Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> and sought to determine which step of the reaction is affected. Thermal stability, intrinsic fluorescence, and native mass spectrometric analyses of RecA revealed that RecA binds at least two Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> ions with K<SUB>D</SUB> ≈ 2 mM and 5 mM. Deletion of the C-terminal acidic tail of RecA made its thermal stability and fluorescence characteristics insensitive to Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> and similar to those of full-length RecA in the presence of saturating Mg<SUP>2+</SUP>. These observations, together with the results of a molecular dynamics simulation, support the idea that the acidic tail hampers the strand exchange reaction by interacting with other parts of RecA, and that binding of Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> to the tail prevents these interactions and releases RecA from inhibition. We observed that binding of the first Mg<SUP>2+</SUP> stimulated joint molecule formation, whereas binding of the second stimulated progression of the reaction. Thus, RecA is actively involved in the strand exchange step as well as bringing the two DNAs close to each other.</P>
Prediction of pedestrian trajectory based on long short-term memory of data

Recently, development of navigation robots and autonomous cars are rapidly progressing. When such robots become popular in our daily life, their collisions with humans should be avoided for safety. For that purpose, we predict pedestrian trajectories with LSTM (long short-term memory) networks and conventional neural networks, and we compare their results. In order to predict sequential data, we use the following two methods: (I) predicting steps of data with models, and (II) predicting steps of data with a model by applying one-step prediction several times. By examining these two methods, it was found that the performances of the method I with the LSTM network and the conventional neural network are comparable, and the performance of the method II with the LSTM network is significantly better than that with the conventional neural network.
Japanese Expressions that Include English Expressions

We extracted English expressions that appear in Japanese sentences in newspaper articles and on the Internet. The results obtained from the newspaper articles showed that the preposition "in" has been regularly used for more than ten years, and it is still regularly used now. The results obtained from the Internet articles showed there were many kinds of English expressions from various parts of speech. We extracted some interesting expressions that included English prepositions and verb phrases. These were interesting because they had different word orders to the normal order in Japanese expressions. Comparing the extracted English and katakana expressions, we found that the expressions that are commonly used in Japanese are often written in the katakana syllabary and that the expressions that are not so often used in Japanese, such as prepositions, are hardly ever written in the katakana syllabary.
Effect of Annealing Temperature on Magnetic Properties of Dust Cores

Magnetic Properties of dust cores made of mixtures of atomized pure iron powder and pure alumina powder has been investigated in the temperature range from 673 to 1073K. The effect of annealing on coercivity has been positive effect up to 973K and thus coercivity is gradually reduced form 280A/m (as-compressed) to 160A/m (973K). However, dust cores annealed at 1073K displayed a 15% increasing of coercivity by annealing at 973K. Hysteresis loss shows a tendency similar to coercivity. Microstructure observation of specimens shows grain refinement by recrystallization in the temperature range from 773 to 1073K.
Developing Education Support System using Interactive Floor Interface

Recently, ICT equipment has been introduced to classrooms in Japan. Moreover, effectiveness of active learning that engages students as active participants in their learning has been discussed. In order to merge the usefulness of ICT and the effectiveness of active learning, we developed interactive floor interface (IFI) that enables users to see teaching materials displayed on a floor and to control it with their gestures. We also developed an interactive teaching material of wave interference designed for IFI. To confirm the effectiveness of IFI, we gave examinations before and after learning to two groups each of which learns wave interference by using either a usual textbook or IFI. As a result, it was found that average scores of examinations have significantly increased in both groups. Although an average increase of scores for IFI was higher than that of usual textbook, we could not show its significant difference. It is important to improve teaching materials for IFI by giving further interactivity, user-friendliness, and so on.
Development of drinking support device for spinal cord injuries to enhance quality of life

Spinal cord injury causes a paralysis of any part of the body depending on which part of spinal cord is destroyed. It is well known that a severity of the paralysis is determined by both a location and a degree of injury in the vertebral bones. For example, in a case of injury at the C4 vertebral bone a patient is paralyzed from the neck down, and needs a caregiver to help almost all activities of daily life. Recently, a quality of life is considered to be important, and various welfare devices have been proposed to realize a better life of a patient. Regarding a C4 patient, drinking water by oneself whenever he/she wants to do is strongly desired in the daily life. In this paper, we develop a drinking support device for a C4 patient. The device is evaluated in a rehabilitation hospital, and it is shown that all requirements on structure, degree of freedom, safety, conform, daily maintenance, etc. are satisfied with an acceptable level.
An Attempt to Measure the Familiarity of Specialized Japanese in the Nursing Care Field

Having a firm grasp of technical terms is essential for learners of Japanese for Specific Purposes (JSP). This research aims to analyze Japanese nursing care vocabulary based on objective corpus-based frequency and subjectively rated word familiarity. For this purpose, we constructed a text corpus centered on the National Examination for Certified Care Workers to extract nursing care keywords. The Log-Likelihood Ratio (LLR) was used as the statistical criterion for keyword identification, giving a list of 300 keywords as target words for a further word recognition survey. The survey involved 115 participants of whom 51 were certified care workers (CW group) and 64 were individuals from the general public (GP group). These participants rated the familiarity of the target keywords through crowdsourcing. Given the limited sample size, Bayesian linear mixed models were utilized to determine word familiarity rates. Our study conducted a comparative analysis of word familiarity between the CW group and the GP group, revealing key terms that are crucial for professionals but potentially unfamiliar to the general public. By focusing on these terms, instructors can bridge the knowledge gap more efficiently.
