In this study, PVF11 was selected among 20 candidate pathogenesis-related genes in Burkholderia glumae based on its effect on virulence to rice. PVF11 was found to interact with several plant defense-related WRKY proteins as evidenced through yeast-two hybrid analysis (Y2H). Moreover, PVF11 showed interactions with abiotic and biotic stress response-related rice proteins, as shown by genome-wide Y2H screening employing PVF11 and a cDNA library from B. glumae-infected rice. To confirm the effect of PVF11 on B. glumae virulence, in planta assays were conducted at different stages of rice growth. As a result, a PVF11-defective mutant showed reduced virulence in rice seedlings and stems but not in rice panicles, indicating that PVF11 involvement in B. glumae virulence in rice is stage-dependent.

<P>We fabricated a functional pentacene/CH3NH3PbI3−xClx perovskite interface where optical gating and field assisted charge retention occur. Using a pentacene/perovskite field effect transistor (FET) test platform, we investigated the interfacial charge transfer associated with optical gating through threshold voltage measurements under illumination. Importantly, bistable electrical conduction in pentacene/perovskite FET devices was achieved as a result of field-induced charge retention at the interface and the origin is discussed to be associated with interfacial charging at the pentacene/perovskite interface. Interfacial contact modification associated with ion migration and other possible effects in the perovskite layer plays a crucial role in forming a functional interface involving organic semiconducting materials.</P>

<P>A novel small-molecule electrolyte, 1,1'-bis(4-hydroxypropyl)[4,4'-bipyridine]-1,1'-diium bromide (V-OH), containing a mixture of PTB7:PC71BM has been designed and synthesized as a cathode buffer layer for inverted polymer solar cells (iPSCs). The molecular structure of this new compound comprises a viologen skeleton with hydroxyl group terminals. While the viologen unit is responsible for generating a favorable interface dipole, the two terminal hydroxyl groups of V-OH may generate a synergy effect in the magnitude of the interface dipole. Consequently, the devices containing the V-OH interlayer exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.13% (short circuit current = 17.13 mA/cm(2), open circuit voltage = 0.75 V, fill factor = 71.1%). The PCE of the devices with V-OH exhibited better long-term stability compared to that of the devices without V-OH. Thus, we found that it is possible to enhance the efficiency of PSCs by a simple approach without the need for complicated methods of device fabrication.</P>
The Roles of Two hfq Genes in the Virulence and Stress Resistance of Burkholderia glumae

The Hfq protein is a global small RNA chaperone that interacts with regulatory bacterial small RNAs (sRNA) and plays a role in the post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. The roles of Hfq in the virulence and pathogenicity of several infectious bacteria have been reported. This study was conducted to elucidate the functions of two hfq genes in Burkholderia glumae, a causal agent of rice grain rot. Therefore, mutant strains of the rice-pathogenic B. glumae BGR1, targeting each of the two hfq genes, as well as the double defective mutant were constructed and tested for several phenotypic characteristics. Bacterial swarming motility, toxoflavin production, virulence in rice, siderophore production, sensitivity to $H_2O_2$, and lipase production assays were conducted to compare the mutant strains with the wild-type B. glumae BGR1 and complementation strains. The hfq1 gene showed more influence on bacterial motility and toxoflavin production than the hfq2 gene. Both genes were involved in the full virulence of B. glumae in rice plants. Other biochemical characteristics such as siderophore production and sensitivity to $H_2O_2$ induced oxidative stress were also found to be regulated by the hfq1 gene. However, lipase activity was shown to be unassociated with both tested genes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to elucidate the functions of two hfq genes in B. glumae. Identification of virulence-related factors in B. glumae will facilitate the development of efficient control measures.
Thermoelectric properties of solution-processed antimony-doped tin oxide thin films

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Antimony (Sb)-doped tin oxide (ATO) nanoparticles with various doping amounts were prepared by solvothermal synthesis. ATO thin films were fabricated on glass substrates via spin coating using a prepared ATO nanoparticle suspension solution. The effect of doping amount and annealing temperature in production of thin film on Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity was investigated. The optimized doping conditions (2mol% Sb and annealing temperature=500°C) produced ATO thin films exhibiting power factors (S<SUP>2</SUP> σ), 64.4μWm<SUP>−1</SUP> K<SUP>−2</SUP> which is encouraging for synthesis using inexpensive and facile solution-processing procedures.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Antimony doped tin oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by solvothermal reaction. </LI> <LI> Nanoparticle suspensions were employed for fabrication of thin film. </LI> <LI> The effect of Sb doping amount on thermoelectric performance was studied. </LI> <LI> The effect of annealing temperature on thermoelectric performance was studied. </LI> </UL> </P>

말더듬 성인의 말더듬 중증도와 말더듬 지각 정도 및 사회불안 간의 상관연구

배경 및 목적: 말더듬 성인들은 말더듬으로 인해 대인관계에서 어려움을 겪기도 하는데, 이러한 어려움은 사회불안을 경험하는 사람들과 유사 하다. 본 연구는 말더듬 성인 20명과 정상 성인 20명을 대상으로 대인관계 상황에서 말더듬 성인과 정상 성인이 경험하는 사회불안 정도에 차이가 있는지 살펴보고, 말더듬 성인의 말더듬 중증도, 말 더듬 지각 정도와 사회불안 간에 어떠한 관계가 있는지 알아보고자 하였다. 방법: 사회적 상호작용 불안 척도(Social Interaction Anxiety Scale: SIAS, 이하 SIAS)로 사회불안(social anxiety)을 측정 하여 두 집단 간에 차이가 있는지 비교하였고, 말더듬 성인 집단에게 파라다이스-유창성 평가 (Paradise-Fluency Assessment: P-FA, 이하 P-FA)와 말더듬 지각 검사(Perceptions of Stuttering Inventory: PSI, 이하 PSI)를 실시하여 SIAS, P-FA 및 PSI 점수들 간에 상관이 있는지 살펴보았다. 결과: 첫째, 말더듬 성인과 정상 성인이 경험하는 사회불안에는 유의한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났 다. 둘째, 말더듬 성인의 말더듬 중증도와 말더듬 지각 정도, 말더듬 중증도와 사회불안 간에는 상관 이 없었으나, 말더듬 지각 정도와 사회불안 간에는 높은 상관관계가 있었다. 논의 및 결론: 말더듬 성인은 정상 성인보다 사회불안을 많이 느끼며, 이러한 사회불안은 외현적인 평가에 의해 객관적으 로 판단되는 말더듬 중증도가 아니라 본인 스스로 느끼는 말더듬지각 정도와 관련되어 있다고 할 수 있다. 그러므로 말더듬 평가 시에는 말더듬 성인 본인이 지각하는 말더듬 정도와 대인관계 상황 에서의 어려움을 평가하는 것이 필요하다. Background & Objectives: This study had a two-fold purpose. One was to investigate the difference in social anxiety between adults who stutter (AWS) and normally fluent adults who do not stutter (AWNS). The other was to determine the correlation among stuttering severity, the perception of stuttering severity, and social anxiety among AWS. Method: The participants consisted of two groups: 20 AWS (mean age= 31.1 years) and age- and sex-matched 20 AWNS (mean age=31.7 years). In order to analyze social anxiety, a version of SIAS [Social Interaction Anxiety Scale of Mattick & Clarke (1998), adapted by Hyang-Sook Kim (1983)] was used. In order to evaluate the stuttering severity of AWS, P-FA (Paradise-fluency Assessment; Sim, Shin & Lee, 2004) was used. The perception of stuttering severity was rated by PSI (Perception Stuttering Inventory; Woolfe, 1967), which was adapted in Jeon's study (2005). Independent-samples t-test was conducted to evaluate the difference between the two groups, and Pearson's simple product moment correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation among P-FA, PSI and SIAS scores. Results: The results of this study were as follows: First, AWS showed significantly higher levels of social anxiety in social situations compared to AWNS. Second, correlational analysis revealed that there was no correlation between stuttering severity and the perception of stuttering severity or between stuttering severity and social anxiety. However, there was a significant correlation between the perception of stuttering severity among AWS and social anxiety. Discussion & Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the measurement of social anxiety is an important element in the assessment and treatment of AWS.
