Internal Mixing of Pollutants for Submicron Particles Observed during Springtime in Japan

Internally mixed states of submicron particles during transport from the Asian continent to the Pacific Ocean were analyzed using a single-particle time-offlight mass spectrometer. The observation was conducted at Tsukuba in Japan in the spring of 2005 in order to investigate springtime transport of particles from the continent. The sum of ion intensities of sulfate (${HSO_4}^-$) detected in particles originating from the continental air masses counted for 75% of that in all particles during the observation. By analyzing correlations among compounds, origins and internally mixed states of compounds were estimated. It was found that nitrate was mixed with sulfate-rich particles as the air mass approached Japan. It was confirmed that Asian mineral dust particles played significant roles for transport of continental sulfate to Japan. As a result of analysis on internal mixing of chlorine and nitrate, it was implied that the chlorine loss in fine sea salt particles had already proceeded at Tsukuba. It was characteristic that fluoride ions were significantly detected, coal combustion in the Asian Continent can be an important source of fluorides detected in Japan through the westward transportation of fine particles including fluorides.

The thin amorphous-like layer, formed at the interface between a high-Tc superconducting (Tl0:5,Pb0:5)(Sr0:8,Ba0:2)Ca2Cu3Oy (Tl-1223) .lm and a Ag substrate during heating at 910 ±C, has been examined by using high-voltage high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The interfacial layer is less than 10 nm in thickness. It contacts the (001) plane of Tl-1223 and the (113) or (133) planes of Ag in most cases. Its composition is similar to that of Tl-1223, except for the inclusion of a substantial amount of Ag. Its formation proceeds by diusion of Ag into Tl-1223, during which a structure change .rst occurs at the layer of CuO2 + Ca planes. The Tl(Pb)O + the Sr(Ba)O layers are then destroyed to cause the total structure to become amorphous-like. Furthermore, we have found that it is formed under an irradiation of highly energetic electrons.

In order to extract micro hydropower in the very low specific speed range, a Positive Displacement Turbine (PDT) was proposed and steady performance was determined experimentally. However, the suppression of large pressure pulsation is inevitable for practical application of PDT. The objective of the present study is to reveal the mechanism and the characteristics of pressure pulsation in PDT by use of CFD and to suppress the pressure pulsation. Unsteady CFD analysis has revealed that large pressure pulsation is caused by large variation of rotational speed of the following rotor, while the driving rotor, which is output rotor, keeps constant speed. Here is newly proposed a 4-lobe helical type rotor which can reduce the pressure pulsation drastically and the performance prediction of new PDT is determined.

Luminescence properties of anthracene chromophores were investigated. Anthracene chromophores were incorporated in cyclosiloxane-based hybrid polymers through one-pot hydrosilylation reaction. Using four-armed cyclosiloxanes, divinylterminated siloxane monomers, and 9-vinylanthracenes, anthracene-labeled hybrid polymers were prepared. Free-standing hybrid polymer films were prepared successfully by doctor-blade method and thermal treatment. The polymer films exhibit strong blue fluorescence from anthracene and its fluorescence lifetime was not influenced by the temperature, indicating that the movement of anthracene chromophores was restrained in cyclosiloxane-based hybrid polymer films.

During operation and working of t urbo machines, axial t hrust balancing is important To control and balance the axial thrust, a very simple method using shallow radial grooves mount ed on the casin g wall , called “J g roove”, was proposed, and studied experimentally [ 1]. This paper pres ents a numerical study of the effect of J gro ove on the f low in the n arrow g ap along e nclosed r otating d isks based on ope n source CFD software. It is seen that the difference in pressure between the hub and shroud tip is increased with the increasing numbe r, dep th, and l ength of J groove. But in t he case of increasing w idth of J groove, the pressure loss along the radius decreases when the ratio of the groove width to the outer ra dius W is less than 0.2 and increases when W greater than 0.2.

This paper proposes a new PID parameter tuning method using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) without tuning operator’ know-how. The method searches the PID parameter that realizes the expected step response of the plant. The expected response is defined by the overshoot ratio, the rising time, the settling time. The method is implemented into the PID tuning tool on a personal computer. The plant model represented by the transfer function is obtained by system identification on the PID tuning tool. The PID parameter is computed by PSO-based PID tuning method according to the obtained model. The numerical result and the experiment result show the effectiveness of the proposed tuning method and the developed tool.

<P>This report describes a helicity-selective photoreaction of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with disulfide in the presence of oxygen. The SWNTs were characterized using absorption, photoluminescence (PL), Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and current–voltage (<I>I</I>–<I>V</I>) measurements. Results showed remarkable helicity-selective (metallic SWNTs/semiconducting SWNTs and diameter) functionalization of SWNTs. The reaction rate decreases in the order of metallic SWNTs > semiconducting SWNTs and small-diameter SWNTs > large-diameter SWNTs. Control experiments conducted under various experimental conditions and ESR and femtosecond laser flash photolysis measurements revealed that the helicity-selective reaction proceeds via a photoinduced electron transfer reaction.
