Background/Aims: Although pediatric ulcerative colitis (UC) has a different phenotype and clinical course than adult UC, its clinical features and outcomes are poorly defined, especially in Asian populations. This study investigated the clinical features and long-term outcomes of pediatric UC in a Korean population. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 208 patients aged <18 years diagnosed with UC between 1987 and 2013. The patient characteristics at diagnosis according to the Paris classification and the clinical course were analyzed. Results: The male-to-female ratio was 1.3:1, and the median patient age was 15.5 years. At diagnosis, 28.8% of patients had proctitis (E1), 27.8%, left-sided colitis (E2); 5.2%, extensive colitis (E3); and 38.2%, pancolitis (E4). The cumulative probabilities of extension after 5, 10, 15, and 20 years were 32.7%, 40.4%, 52.5%, and 65.8%, respectively. Eighteen patients underwent colectomy, and three patients had colorectal cancer. The cumulative probabilities of colectomy after 5, 10, 15, and 20 years were 7.1%, 8.9%, 12.6%, and 15.6%, and those of colorectal cancer after 10, 15, and 20 years were 0%, 2.1%, and 12.0%, respectively. The disease extent, Pediatric Ulcerative Colitis Activity Index severity, and systemic corticosteroid therapy were significant risk factors for colectomy. The development of primary sclerosing cholangitis was significantly associated with colorectal cancer. Conclusions: This study provides detailed information on the disease phenotype and long-term clinical outcomes in a large cohort of Korean children with UC. They have extensive disease at diagnosis, a high rate of disease extension, and a low rate of cumulative colectomy.

<P>A simple gram-scale synthesis of Pd–Fe<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB> heterodimer nanocrystals was achieved by controlled one-pot thermolysis of a mixture solution composed of iron acetylacetonate, palladium acetylacetonate, oleylamine, and oleic acid. The heterodimer nanocrystals are composed of a 6 nm-sized Pd nanosphere and a 30 nm-sized faceted Fe<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>4</SUB>nanocrystal and they are soft ferrimagnetic with high saturation magnetization value and low coercivity value. The heterodimer nanocrystals exhibited good activities for various Suzuki coupling reactions. Since the mist of the automobile windshield interferes the driver's sight and safety, it is needed to develop an automatic de-mist equipment with coupling of the Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) unit of an automobile. To be able to coupling between units, we have used RS232C and made the interface board which can communicate between them despite of the difference of communication speed. The Mist possibility (MP) was as the difference of temperature between the dew point and the surface temperature of windshield glass. The automatic de-mist control system begins to operate before the mist covers the inner windshield glass. It was observed that the automatic de-mist control system operates well and removes quickly the mist as long as possible.
A framework for evaluating aggressive driving behaviors based on in-vehicle driving records

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Driving behavior is how drivers respond to actual driving environments and a major factor for road traffic safety. Recent advances in in-vehicle sensors facilitate continuous monitoring of driving behaviors; large-scale driving data have been accumulated. This study develops a framework to evaluate large-scale driving records and to establish clusters that can be used to identify potentially aggressive driving behaviors. The framework employs three steps of data analytic methods: abrupt change detection to extract meaningful driving events from raw data, feature extraction using an auto-encoder, and two-level clustering. This framework is applied to real driving data that were obtained from 43 taxis in Korean metropolitan cities. The application shows that the framework can characterize driving patterns from large-scale driving records and identify clusters with high potential for aggressive driving. The findings imply that the outcome clusters represent the norm of driving behavior and thus can be used as a reference in diagnosing other drivers’ behavior.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> This study developed a framework to cluster drivers’ behavior using driving records. </LI> <LI> The framework was applied to large-scale data from real driving environment. </LI> <LI> Representative driving patterns were identified on the cluster map. </LI> <LI> The cluster map can be used as a reference in evaluating other driver’s behavior. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P>This paper describes the one-pot, aqueous synthesis ofcationicpolymer nanofibers with embedded silver nanoparticles. Poly[2-(<I>tert</I>-butylaminoethyl) methacrylate] (PTBAM) was used asa cationic polymer substrate to reinforce the antimicrobial activityof the embedded silver nanoparticles. Electron microscope analysesrevealed that the as-synthesized nanofibers had diameters of approximately40 nm and lengths up to about 10 μm. Additionally, silver nanoparticlesof approximately 8 nm in diameter were finely embedded into the preparednanofibers. The embedded silver nanoparticles had a lower tendencyto agglomerate than colloidal silver nanoparticles of comparable size.In addition, the nanofibers with embedded silver nanoparticles exhibitedexcellent antibacterial performance against Gram-negative <I>Escherichia coli</I> and Gram-positive <I>Staphylococcusaureus</I>. <P>A systematic study on the selective semihydrogenation of alkynes to alkenes on shape-controlled palladium (Pd) nanocrystals was performed. Pd nanocrystals with a cubic shape and thus exposed {100} facets were synthesized in an aqueous solution through the reduction of Na2PdCl4 with L-ascorbic acid in the presence of bromide ions. The Pd nanocubes were tested as catalysts for the semihydrogenation of various alkynes such as 5-decyne, 2-butyne-1,4-diol, and phenylacetylene. For all substrates, the Pd nanocubes exhibited higher alkene selectivity (>90 %) than a commercial Pd/C catalyst (75-90 %), which was attributed to a large adsorption energy of the carbon-carbon triple bond on the {100} facets of the Pd nanocubes. Our approach based on the shape control of Pd nanocrystals offers a simple and effective route to the development of a highly selective catalyst for alkyne semihydrogenation.</P>

The polyrhodanine modified membrane was applied to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solution because polyrhodanine could be coordinated with specific metal ions. Several parameters such as initial metal concentration, contact time and metal species were evaluated systematically for uptake efficiencies of the fabricated membrane under continuous flow condition. Adsorption isotherms of Hg(II) ion on the AAO-polyrhodanine membrane were analyzed with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption rate of Hg(II) ion on the membrane was obeyed by a pseudo-second order equation, indicating the chemical adsorption. The maximum removal capacity of Hg(II) ion onto the fabricated membrane was measured to be 4.2mmol/g polymer. The AAO-polyrhodanine membrane had also remarkable uptake performance toward Ag(I) and Pb(II) ions. Furthermore, the polyrhodanine modified membrane could be recycled after recovery process. These results demonstrated that the polyrhodanine modified AAO membrane provided potential applications for removing the hazardous heavy metal ions from wastewater.</P>
