<P>The objective of this study was to investigate clinical and radiographic features and gender differences in Korean patients with adult-onset ankylosing spondylitis. Multicenter cross-sectional studies were conducted in the rheumatology clinics of 13 Korean tertiary referral hospitals. All patients had a confirmed diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis according to the modified New York criteria. Clinical, laboratory, and radiographic features were evaluated and disease activities were assessed using the Bath ankylosing spondylitis disease activity index. Five hundred and five patients were recruited. The male to female ratio was 6.1:1. Average age at symptom onset was 25.4±8.9 yr and average disease duration was 9.6±6.8 yr. Males manifested symptoms at a significantly earlier age. HLA-B27 was more frequently positive in males. Hips were more commonly affected in males, and knees in females. When spinal mobility was measured using tragus-to-wall distance and the modified Schober's test, females had significantly better results. Radiographic spinal changes, including bamboo spine and syndesmophytes, were more common in males after adjustment of confounding factors. In conclusion, we observed significant gender differences in radiographic spinal involvement as well as other clinical manifestations among Korea patients with adult-onset ankylosing spondylitis. These findings may influence the timing of the diagnosis and the choice of treatment.</P>

<P>Electrically conductive hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels incorporated with single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and/or polypyrrole (PPy) were developed to promote differentiation of human neural stem/progenitor cells (hNSPCs). The CNT and PPy nanocomposites, which do not easily disperse in aqueous phases, dispersed well and were efficiently incorporated into catechol-functionalized HA (HA CA) hydrogels by the oxidative catechol chemistry used for hydrogel cross-linking. The prepared electroconductive HA hydrogels provided dynamic, electrically conductive threedimensional (3D) extracellular matrix environments that were biocompatible with hNSPCs. The HA CA hydrogels containing CNT and/or PPy significantly promoted neuronal differentiation of human fetal neural stem cells (hfNSCs) and human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neural progenitor cells (hiPSC-NPCs) with improved electrophysiological functionality when compared to differentiation of these cells in a bare HA CA hydrogel without electroconductive motifs. Calcium channel expression was upregulated, depolarization was activated, and intracellular calcium influx was increased in hNSPCs that were differentiated in 3D electroconductive HA CA hydrogels; these data suggest a potential mechanism for stem cell neurogenesis. Overall, our bioinspired, electroconductive HA hydrogels provide a promising cell-culture platform and tissue-engineering scaffold to improve neuronal regeneration.</P>
Stacked Gold Nanodisks for Bimodal Photoacoustic and Optical Coherence Imaging

<P>Herein, we report on biological imaging nanoprobes: physically synthesized gold nanodisks that have inherent optical advantages a wide range of resonant wavelengths, tunable ratio of light absorption-to-scattering, and responsiveness to random incident light due to their two-dimensional circular nanostructure. Based on our proposed physical synthesis where gold is vacuum deposited onto a prepatterned polymer template and released from the substrate in the form of a nanodisk, monodisperse two-dimensional gold nanodisks were prepared with independent control of their diameter and thickness. The optical benefits of the Au nanodisk were successfully demonstrated by the measurement of light absorbance of the nanodisks and the application of stacked nanodisks, where a smaller sized Au nanodisk was laid atop a larger nanodisk, as bimodal contrast agents for photoacoustic microscopy and optical coherence tomography.</P>
