May Fourth: A Patriotic Movement of Cosmopolitanism

Xu Jilin 성균관대학교 동아시아학술원 2009 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.9 No.1

The May Fourth Movement, which occurred ninety years ago in 1919, has long been characterized as a patriotic event in textbooks and mainstream media, a collective memory to be refreshed and glorified periodically. The author seeks to characterize what kind of patriotism it was and its relationships with the cosmopolitanism, social regeneration, and individualism of the New Culture Movement of the period. The May Fourth Movement, after turning into a social movement, would inevitably become more ideology-driven and more political. Post-1922 fervor for politics, having emerged from the New Cultural Movement, had a distinctive doctrinal commitment and was fueled by specific ideology. But after 1922, in the wake of the upheaval of the May Fourth Movement and the continuous social movements, all social classes became dissatisfied with the warlord rule and the Beiyang government. The catalyzing effects of both ideology and social movement paved the way for the Nationalist Revolution. Like the May Fourth Movement, the Nationalist Revolution had its catalyst, which was nothing other than the consciousness of nationalism, being suppressed by the cosmopolitanism of the May Fourth period. What is stressed here is that social movement was not cultural movement. New Culture Movement could simply import theories and tolerate diversity, but a social movement needed mass mobilization and the propagation of ideas.

      • QTBiCGSTAB Algorithm for Large Linear Systemand Parallelized

        Xiaomei Xu,Jilin Zhang,Jian Wan,Li Zhou,Ming Jiang 보안공학연구지원센터 2014 International Journal of Grid and Distributed Comp Vol.7 No.6

According to the traditional stabilized biconjugate gradient algorithm (BiCGSTAB) deficiency in data locality, this paper proposed a QTBiCGSTAB algorithm whose core idea is that recursively divides sparse matrix with quarter tree into sub-matrix and reorders them, to improve the hit ratio of cache and enhance the algorithm’s efficiency. And the idea is good for algorithm being parallized, that is proved by the numerical experiments later. It mainly shows, firstly, QTBiCGSTAB algorithm is more efficiency than BiCGSTAB, and the speedup would reach 1:330. The target division length would be influnced on the algorithm’s performance; Secondly, for large linear system, parallized QTBiCGSTAB is more efficiency than serial’s.

Comparative transcriptome analyses provide insights into the adaptation mechanisms to acute salt stresses in juvenile Sinonovacula constricta

        Bin Ma,Zhaoshou Ran,Xiaorong Xu,Jilin Xu,Kai Liao,Jiayi Cao,Xiaojun Yan 한국유전학회 2019 Genes & Genomics Vol.41 No.5

Background Sinonovacula constricta is an economically important bivalve species in China, Korea and Japan that widely resides in estuarine and coastal areas where salinity fluctuates rapidly. However, little is known about its adaptation mechanisms to acute salt stresses. Objective To reveal the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in acute salt stresses in juvenile S. constricta. Methods Nine cDNA libraries (triplicate each trial) were established from juvenile S. constricta, which were subjected to low salinity (5 psu), optimal salinity (15 psu) and high salinity (25 psu) for 6 h, respectively. Results Illumina sequencing generated 478,587,310 clean reads totally, which were assembled into 427,057 transcripts of 246,672 unigenes. Compared with the control, 1259 and 2163 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified under acute low and high salt stresses, respectively. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses of DEGs revealed that several key metabolic modulations were mainly responsible for the acute salt stresses. According to the significantly highlighted KEGG pathways, some key DEGs were identified and discussed in details. Notably, based on which, some potential osmolytes were further speculated. Conclusion Here, we carried out a unique report of comparative transcriptome analyses in juvenile S. constricta in response to acute salt stresses. The identified DEGs and their significantly enriched GO terms and KEGG pathways were critical for understanding and further investigating the underlying the physical and biochemical performances, and ultimately facilitated S. constricta breeding. Besides, the transcriptome data greatly enriched the genetic information of S. constricta, which were valuable for promoting its molecular biology researches.

A Hydrogel-based First-Aid Tissue Adhesive with Effective Hemostasis and Anti-bacteria for Trauma Emergency Management

        Dongjie Zhang,Li Mei,Yuanping Hao,Bingcheng Yi,Jilin Hu,Danyang Wang,Yaodong Zhao,Zhe Wang,Hailin Huang,Yongzhi Xu,Xuyang Deng,Cong Li,Xuewei Li,Qihui Zhou,Yun Lu 한국생체재료학회 2023 생체재료학회지 Vol.27 No.00

Background Clinical tissue adhesives remain some critical drawbacks for managing emergency injuries, such as inadequate adhesive strength and insufficient anti-infection ability. Herein, a novel, self-healing, and antibacterial carboxymethyl chitosan/polyaldehyde dextran (CMCS/PD) hydrogel is designed as the first-aid tissue adhesive for effective trauma emergency management. Methods We examined the gel-forming time, porosity, self-healing, antibacterial properties, cytotoxicity, adhesive strength, and hemocompatibility. Liver hemorrhage, tail severance, and skin wound infection models of rats are constructed in vivo, respectively. Results Results demonstrate that the CMCS/PD hydrogel has the rapid gel-forming (~ 5 s), good self-healing, and effective antibacterial abilities, and could adhere to tissue firmly (adhesive strength of ~ 10 kPa and burst pressure of 327.5 mmHg) with excellent hemocompatibility and cytocompatibility. This suggests the great prospect of CMCS/ PD hydrogel in acting as a first-aid tissue adhesive for trauma emergency management. The CMCS/PD hydrogel is observed to not only achieve rapid hemostasis for curing liver hemorrhage and tail severance in comparison to commercial hemostatic gel (Surgiflo ®) but also exhibit superior anti-infection for treating acute skin trauma compared with clinical disinfectant gel (Prontosan ®). Conclusions Overall, the CMCS/PD hydrogel offers a promising candidate for first-aid tissue adhesives to manage the trauma emergency. Because of the rapid gel-forming time, it could also be applied as a liquid first-aid bandage for mini-invasive surgical treatment.
