        Cadmium permeates through calcium channels and activates transcriptomic complexity in wheat roots in response to cadmium stress

        Present study was conducted to elucidate the molecular regulation mechanisms and the critical genes involved in regulating wheat early responses to Cadmium (Cd) stress. Both ICP-AES and fluorescence labeling were used to find that the Cd2? influx into wheat roots was significantly suppressed by pre-treatment with or in the presence of the Ca2? channel blocker LaCl3, Verapamil and N-ethylmaleimide. RNA-seq technology was used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) during 12 h of 100 lM Cd stress. Raw reads (n = 80,309,620 were obtained. 108,549 unigenes were identified and classified into 25 COG categories. 8584 DEGs were detected. Many DEGs were involved in defense and detoxification mechanisms including signaling protein kinases, transcription factors, metal transporters and biosynthesis-related enzymes. A Gene Ontology annotation analysis based on the DEGs indicated the presence of many categories including cellular process, cell part and binding, catalytic activity and transporter activity. The Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes pathway analysis identified 107 terms that were enriched for all of the 1018 DEGs. Quantitative real-time PCR of 27 selected DEGs revealed that the expression patterns were consistent with the transcript abundance changes as identified by Solexa analysis.

        Crystallization behavior of MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 glassceramics prepared by directly heat-treating of laterite ore smelting slag

        In this paper, we proposed a novel method to prepare MgO-Al2O3-SiO2 (MAS) glass-ceramics through direct heat treatmentwith the slag of laterite ore. First, the Ni-Fe alloy and slag glass were prepared simultaneously by this method, and the yieldrate of Ni-Fe alloy was up to 95.69%. Then, the MAS glass-ceramics can be obtained by direct heat-treating for the slag glass. The energy consumption of glass-ceramics production was much lower than that in traditional method to make full use of thethermal energy of the molten slag. The crystallization behavior of the glass-ceramics was investigated by XRD, DSC andFESEM. The results demonstrate that many phase-separated droplets appear in the slag glass. During the heat treatment, thephase-separated droplets as favorable nucleation sites to inducing crystallization. The crystallinity and crystallite size of thesamples exhibits an increasing tendency with the increase of heat treatment temperature and time. The crystalline phases ofglass-ceramics were two different compositions magnesium aluminum silicates (MgAl2Si4O12 and (Mg,Al)SiO3). The activationenergies of the slag glass were calculated by Kissinger and Ozawa method, which were 308.81 and 309.36 kJ·mol-1, respectively. And the crystallization mechanism of the glass-ceramics was dominated by both the surface crystallization and bulkcrystallization with one-dimensional growth.

        Selective Adsorption and Reusability for Pb<SUP>2+</SUP> of Chitosan-based Microporous Polymer

        A green and simple glow-discharge electrolysis plasma (GDEP) technique was used to synthesize the chitosan/attapulgite/poly(acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (CS/ATP/P(AA-co-AMPS)) microporous polymer. The results showed that the optimum pH for the adsorption of Pb<SUP>2+</SUP>, Cd<SUP>2+</SUP>, Co<SUP>2+</SUP>, and Cu<SUP>2+</SUP> is 4.8, and time of adsorption equilibrium is 60 min. Adsorption kinetics fits well to the pseudo-second-order model. The maximum adsorption capacities for Pb<SUP>2+</SUP>, Cd<SUP>2+</SUP>, Cu<SUP>2+</SUP> and Co<SUP>2+</SUP> are 500.0, 301.7, 180.0 and 151.7 mg g<SUP>-1</SUP>, respectively. The microporous polymer has higher adsorption selectivity toward Pb<SUP>2+</SUP> with the coexistence of Cd<SUP>2+</SUP>, Co<SUP>2+</SUP>, and Cu<SUP>2+</SUP>. The CS/ATP/P(AAco-AMPS) possesses promising regeneration and reusability using 2.0 g L–1 ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid tetrasodium salt (EDTA-4Na) solution as eluent. CS/ATP/P(AA-co-AMPS) can be used as a very promising absorbent for the separation purification and selective recovery of Pb<SUP>2+</SUP> in aqueous solution containing Cd<SUP>2+</SUP>, Co<SUP>2+</SUP>, and Cu<SUP>2+</SUP> ions.

        Essential oil of Citrus limon Osbeck: An insecticidal natural product against Cryptolestes pusillus SchÖnherr

        This study investigated the insecticidal activity and mechanism of action of essential oil from Citrus limon Osbeck (C. limon oil). The fumigation method was used to determine the insecticidal activity of different concentrations of C. limon oil against adult Cryptolestes pusillus (C. pusillus). In addition, the effect of C. limon oil on the organs of adult C. pusillus was studied. The results showed that when the concentration of C. limon oil reached 0.6 μL/cm 3 , following fumigation for 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 h, the corrected mortality rates of adult C. pusillus were 13 %, 30 %, 47 %, 95 %, 97 %, and 100 %, respectively. Furthermore, C. limon oil caused vacuolization in the digestive tract and adipose cells, thus, as a plant-based insecticide, it has strong research and application value.
